In the year 1939 the british Parker and Charles composed the song “We'll meet again”, which became the farewell anthem of the soldiers who left for the front in World War II. This song was popularized by the singer Vera Lynn, who even participated in a musical of the same name in 1943. The song has had dozens of versions, both within jazz and popular music (Johnny Cash, The Byrds, etc.), and, as an anecdote, this song appears in the final scene of “Red telephone? We flew to Moscow”, that Kubrick satire on the cold war. As a curiosity, this song was included in a "pack" of 100 songs that would be broadcast continuously by the BBC during the hundred days after a hypothetical nuclear attack.

It’s terrifying how close we were close to this genuinely being a reality. If that one Russian guy in that submarine hadn’t trusted his instincts, then this would have commenced...
That's happened a few times . . . hell, a bear wandered into a missile silo one time.
To be honest, with the Russia and Ukraine stuff right now, it's safe to say this could truly be the end. If Russia just goes ahead and invades and releases all hell, we just need to be glad that we have a nuclear deal.

Then NATO will send troops into Ukraine in retaliation and Japan will do the same with Taiwan, and the rest is history (or at least it will be when it all happens).
this sounds like sitting on your porch, your house on a hill over looking a mountain scape. your holding the hand of your lover, looking at memories in an old photo album in your lap while drinking tea and just reminicing about the past. taking comfort in the thought that your children are safe in a vault. you hear the sirens warnings, the military men yelling. you know your to close to where the bomb will hit to survive, but that might not be a bad thing as youve lived a full, eventful life. you see the flash of light slashing against the mountains and the trees as it hits. you look to your lover, who is also at peace with the end of your life story. They smile at you and lean over, a final kiss before the radiation and blast wave hits you both.

@@vibrantgleam Saaaame man
It's strange for me that, what most people see as an existential fear/dread, is instead a comfort to me. By no means should it occur but if it did, at least there's a finality of the spectacular kind. Not a slow descend in a social alzheimers, where the downfall of man was a rot, dying with a wimper, but instead a holy fury of cosmic proportion against a cold, uncaring existence. To fill the cold void with a blazing death scream of a species that never should have been fucked with, because there will never again be a species like it. Then again, I am projecting here, no doubt about that.
Thats quite a thought
@@Keevie2 been in a weird state of mind working back to back double shifts, with minimal sleep and off medication for about four days now? Think its been four days.
@@TheAsylumCat Ah I see
To be honest, I don't find much poetry in it, except maybe the bitter, rotting, spittle-laden inky poetry of the void one scrawls into the walls at Auschwitz or Kolyma. I've read a few accounts from survivors of Hiroshima, and I don't find much beauty in passing walking corpses, too pained to think, flayed by the light of ten thousand suns, who will die of blood loss before they can die of sepsis everywhere at once before they can die of acute radiation syndrome before they can die of cancer, after abandoning your family to burn because you can't get them out of the flaming rubble in time.
Then, after the air has been poisoned and darkened and all those who live in each other's company have been shredded by fire and all logistics have died, there will be the living who envy the dead.
@@FourOf92000 as I was trying to imply, given a choice between blaze of glory or slow decent into madness, I choose the former. ...And now you understand the associations old Londoners actually have around this song! That sort of feeling is exactly what war in general is like for civilians. I can imagine using this show at the end of a story of two young lovers.
"Is it going to hurt?" She asks as he embraces her closely from behind, speaking to her in a soothing tone, his voice shaking with fear as well.
He kisses her on the cheek as his heart sinks deeply. "Only for a moment...". He tries to comfort her with a song as she rests her head on his chest. "We'll meet again, don't know where don't know when...", His singing is overwhelmed with the sounds of sirens & distant screams as he gently places his hands over her eyes, shielding her from the sight of the sudden bright light that fills the sky, followed with the loudest BOOM anyone's ever heard.
Within mere seconds, the two young lovers disintegrated into nothing as a large mushroom cloud of radiation expanded itself for miles, destroying & irradiating all within its reach.

If nuclear war does happen hopefully it turns out like it did in star trek the world rebuilt. The real world will rebuild hopefully better than before
There’s something about this version in particular, that’s absolutely heartbreaking. Aside from the painful realism that something like this could very well happen some day, this version of the song had me crying all the way through.
I think that the thing that makes this version hit so hard is that the original was used to send soldiers out for WW2, and the lyrics make that obvious. It’s a song of hope, the hope that they may come back or that there’s at least some beyond where they’ll meet each other again. But this version changes the song from one of hope to one of acceptance. We’ll meet again becomes a parting cry, one that somebody says because they’ve tried all they can and the world still blew up. Some sunny day emphasizes nuclear weaponry.
I think that’s what makes this so powerful, it’s a song of acceptance, you’ve tried all you can, and still failed. Now, you can only say that we’ll meet again someday, but there’s no hope, only uncertainty.
I’d argue that this is better than the original, and that’s a hard bar to top.

POV: it’s 1952, Hitler’s bunker was never attacked. He continued his attack with the Axis to the west, he finally captured land on the east coast of the us. Japan pushed to Hawaii and then to California and the northwest part of the us. As they push farther in, England is hopeless as Italy pushes from the east. China has been taken by the Nazi regime. With no strong Allie’s remaining except for the Soviets, the US is hopeless in a loosing war. The axis pushes farther in, until all coastal retreats are gone. They finally make the choice to drop a thermonuclear bomb on the remains of the US. Fighting between army’s in the states stop, everyone knows they must savor their last moments. Radios all tune to the same channel. This echo’s throughout the battle field as the bomb starts to fall.
Jesus Christ, thank god we won
Damn, I never though a gorilla tag player would be that serious. Nice alternative story!
amazing writing. Lets all keep in mind that the only thing that kept hitler from nuking both moscow and new york was him underfunding Heisemberg, and the allied bombing of the heavy water plant in narvik. Had hitler conceded to all of Heisembergs request the world would still be under the grasp of nazism
Please write a book like this
@@Mr.Human1 May I recommend The Man in the High Castle? The book and the series are both really good. I think it's one of the best alternative history stories written.
Idk why but those sirens always bring me to tears
In Odessa we hear it everyday, every morning and woke up cause of this sound and pray God to give me one more day on this Earth
@@st.pablo.str. It's very sad, I hope that someday the good times will come.
Perfect for now…
Instead of warning sounds this should play over the radio letting everyone know the end is coming
Na... there should be warning sirens... but this playing on every radio at max volume...

Now is not the time for fear
Ah, yes. The end credits to centuries of history of the human civilization.
Im just writing this just in case. So hey, funny how we got here huh? Well that's pretty normal i guess since the past 2 years hasn't really been the most stable of years but whatever, we're here now huh?
Ever since i was a kid i always find that our life that we live in had pretty sick sense of comedy, this human comedy that brings out the most happiest, beautiful, joyful, pleasurable, sad, painful, dreadful, depressing, violent, ephemeral human experience for each individual.
I really feel like we could been so much better than we are today but due too our prejudice too one after another, it feel like we keep intentionally distancing ourselves from each other. But that's just how it is for us, every conflict we had in the history books are just proof of that.
Honestly im glad it was us. Bit ironic for that we cause our own extinction but hey That's Life i guess. I just wish i could have use my time better that's all.
So thanks for this very weird experience.
