I love how what you find can make a story… I imagined a policeman tracking a killer out of his jurisdiction and then getting into a scuffle while bringing the murderer to Justice and in the scuffle getting buttons torn off his coat but then coming home knowing his friend’s killer had been found. 👍
Brad, I think that the horse tack tells as much history about a site as any coin or other artifacts....so there is no problem as far as Im concerned with showing as much horse tack as you want....a treasure is a treasure.
A favorite book I've read in the past few years was Rum Runners and Revenuers, which is a book about Vermont during Prohibition. Your police buttons made me think of some back woods police chase. So very cool
Having been born in Greenfield, MA, with relatives in North Adams, that button triggered memories for me as well. Now, my son and 3 nephews are police officers. Definitely a special find.
Jackson’s warrented is what your small piece of pottery says. They had many different decorative scenic designs. I believe it’s from around early to mid 1800’s.
Finding that police button is what I love about this hobby; that wonderous, magical feeling when you connect with the past. And when you make a personal connection, it is all the more poignant.

When you found the North Adams button I was so happy. I live in Adams and seeing something like that was exciting. At one time Adams and North Adams were one!
I went down one of the worm holes of TH-cam and didn't have to go far. Found GMMD and have enjoyed every one of your videos. It cost me though, XP ORX, XP pinpointer, back pack, and few other accessories. I'm not into all the bugs that are in the forest right now, but will be getting out when the temps drop. Went out the other day on a local island I grew up on and found my oldest fine, button with Head Light on it. 1930s cover all work clothing.. Lost my control panel on that Island, must not have snapped it good enough. Two hours to back track, give up looking and stumble across it on the way back to the truck. Lesson learned. Hope the family is doing well, say hi.
Brad I used to work in a horse barn of hunters and Jumpers for show riding and the way you can tell what the bits are is by the shape of the ring on the side what you found is a round snaffle bit thier are different bits that the horse responds to better that's why they use them ..when I rode I used a 6" eggbutt bit which ment the ring was shaped like a Egg hence forth the name ..and ZEUS that was my horse used to jump 9ft fences hope this helps have a great weekend can't wait to see what you find nxt video 😎🤙
The last year of Indian cent was 1909 . There was 3 different pennies minted in 1909 ! One was the Indian one cent , then there was two Wheat pennies , one Wheat has the VDB on the back and the other Wheat didn't have the VDB on the back !
@@harrybond1485 well you just included the mint marks ! I was talking about style because most say Indian penny or Wheat penny then say the mint mark ! So style wise there was only 3 ! Mint mark wise there could be even more than what you said because I'm sure that the Indian pennies had mint marks as well !

Hi Brad! The old horse bit is a, O-ring driving bit or straight curve. Google Mullen or Steuben type bits for reference. They were used for training, driving (ie carriages, wagons etc.) and showing. 😊

I liked the fact you mentioned an old coin is an old coin, some of these bigger channels mock the fact they only found a for example "early wheatie" when some of us are limited to areas that an early wheatie is a terrific and exciting find. Say Gday to Eddie Pacoochie for me 👍

2:47 is a straight bit; probably was "sweet iron". You are right, the snaffle bit has the "hinge" in the center. We love the "horse stuff"! Personally, that barn hinge would have gone into my pack for the trip home. One of your better videos, despite the blurriness. Good job, Brad!
that bell at 10 mins, is like the ones on a set I bought at an Amish auction. It can be re attached with a carter pin, unlike the ones that are (not sure about terms!) riveted (?) onto the leather. that auction was fun! A buyer was getting everything with only her bid, and when I bid on it, she turned around and glared at me! We got the whole set re mounted on new leather and it sang so pretty. I love your videos!

The old Mullen mouth you found has an un-jointed mouthpiece. It is shaped in a very gentle curve and is designed to rest on the bars of the mouth and be cushioned by the tongue. The Mullen-Mouthed Snaffle bit is considered by many riders to be a very gentle bit, but in fact, the constant pressure of the bit on the tongue may be more irritating to the horse than a jointed bit. Looks to narrow for a big working horse, (draft), if it measures less than 5” wide, it’s a horse and or, Mule bit. The old curry comb was used to break off mud clots on horses coats, as well a de shedding tool on thick winter coats, in Spring. It’s been around since the 1200s, perfected as the modern version in the UK. Modern curries have an actual comb on one end for mane and or tail grooming. You are correct, it’s harsh, today should not be used on the body on fully shedded animals. This type grooming tool was almost exclusively all there was available, for the centuries. Very popular until the pleasure horse was more affordable to the average person, where grooming tools evolved, ever changing to suit different equine grooming needs.

I got a wheat penny in change last week! They were common, when I was a kid, and even in the 60s, my second grade teacher collected the Mercury dimes, when we bought an ice cream sandwich from her after lunch on hot lunch days. Haven't gotten one of those in change in decades! My dad metal detected in the 70s, and took us to ghost towns - great family activities!

This brings up what I often wonder while watching any metal detecting videos. What agreement did you have with the owner on who keeps what? Owner gets first pick of the finds? Maybe they want all of it? I’ve heard horror stories from fellow arrowhead hunters where the owner takes a look, puts a prime artifact in his pocket, and walks away. Any details, or good stories?

Yes, that is still called a snaffle bit, it is a straight snaffle. The one with the joint are called broken snaffle. Nice find!

Brad, thank you, as always! That's a bar bit. Snaffle bits are jointed in the middle. Bar bits were used on horses with less sensitive mouths.

Being a retired Police Officer I have to agree, those buttons are a cool find. It would be interesting to know approximately how old they are.
This brings up what I often wonder while watching any metal detecting videos. What agreement did you have with the owner on who keeps what? Owner gets first pick of the finds? Maybe they want all of it? I’ve heard horror stories from fellow arrowhead hunters where the owner takes a look, puts a prime artifact in his pocket, and walks away. Any details, or good stories?
Very cool finding that second Police button after all those years. Think about driving up I-91 to the NEK. Lots of old sites up here.

Every once in a while in the early 1960's in my grandparents store we would get wheat pennies in change and even Indian head but not as often

Another awesome video! most of my good finds were found in heavily metal detected areas with a cheap Minelab Vanquish 440 detector.
