  • Re-growing scallions/green onions in water vs soil, which method is better? See for yourself in this 45 days time-lapse.
    Note: Green onion scraps were cut off the same bunch using the same water in the same growing area. New water was replaced every time the scenes were changed.

    I did this too and growing in soil is just so much faster

    Hydroponic folks are not going to appreciate this portrayal. The roots had no airflow. Suspend the onion in a basket and redo.

      I keep mine in water but I change out the water very often and I only leave water at the roots not the onion itself

    So, once the nutrients were taken from the water in the water tub, did you not think it wise to refresh the water?

      @@justmeinflorida33542 if he did, he did it in a way I can't work out..
      The tub never moves, the water never lost it's tinge, the gab isn't big enough to suck the water out 'in place'..
      It just looks like the water is topped up, not replaced.

      @@ColinRichardson I'm just going by what he said. I have personally grown them in water and the bulb gets mushy unless you transfer them to dirt once the roots grow.

      @@justmeinflorida33542I believe in big upscaled hydroponics, they actually keep the bulbs themselves out of water directly after an amount of time, and allow the roots to grow long into running water.. Though, this just sounds like a massive ballache of effort.

    Hi! What kind of soil did you use? Is it mixed with some special soil like fertilizer?

    No. I regrow green onions in water and transfer to soil, and after a week they are like 5 inches or longer.

    Soils have minerals which facilitate growth while water on its own does not therefore growth levels off.

      This test was biased. The roots of the onion should have only been halfway in the water allowing oxygen to reach the other half. All else equal, the onion would have grown just as well as in the soil. But, the poster may not have known this. This is the politics between traditional gardener and the new generation hydroponic gardeners. I am a firm believer in hydroponic growing now. After watching dopers grow, they may be deadheads, but they know how to grow in water.

    • @equallywrong
      @equallywrong ปีที่แล้ว

      @@redmihairi good point. even in nutrient water, if the roots can not breathe you'll get stunted growth and before long a dead plant. I'm a newbie at hydroponics and I do not claim to know it all, but if someone like knows the basic to Kratky growing, this experienced grower more than likely has to know.
