I'm honoured that you guy's used one of my comps from the film 'Everest' as an example for keying! Been watching you for years, and you were one of my biggest inspiration to start doing visual effects! Keep it up!
3:57 - 5:09 This is why I always get mad when people say 3D is "cheap" or "lazy" compared to hand-drawn animation. Hand-drawn animation is tedious in its own right, but to say that 3D is "lazy" is ridiculous because there are SOOOO many things that go into making a good 3D movie/effect - far more so than what goes on into making a good 2D movie quite frankly. It's as if people think 3D is just when people sit on the computer and just flail their arms on the keyboards and magically stuff happens. It takes a LOT of freaking work in creating a character even before you really get a chance to actually animate them.
EVERY 3D animator who had their chance to draw on a tablet for 2D digital will tell you how Freaking easy it is to animate a rigged character, mind my words, " Animating a rigged character"
Nobody says 3D is cheap or lazy. He didn't even say it in the video. Everyone agrees with you. Why are you ranting about this? This is an an unnecessary stupid comment.
Wish you had posted this 10 years ago before I spent an ass ton of money going to school for it. Great video I'm glad you shined a light on this complicated little industry
I am not a movie/media student, but watching movies is one of my passions. The first time I watch a movie, it's because of the story. The 2nd to the N-th time I watch a movie it's because of the time, hard work and software engineering that goes into making a movie. Thank you for teaching me how to appreciate it even more
I sighed at the same point as soon as Rotoscoping was mentioned. I had to rotoscope gloves onto a hand in a TV series once (a detective forgot to wear forensic gloves) the hands were holding evidence that was a bloody glass bulb full of water, the actors hands moved in front and behind the thing. it was a long long scene, too many late nights rotoscoping it. So the word sends a shiver down my spine.
About 4:30 in the video you talk about lighting using a 3D modeled face as example. I would be cool to see an 101 episode about practical scene lighting on faces, facial expressions, emotions, body, object lighting, reflections, shadow casting, etc.. how to play with light. Great job on the channel btw!
I really like this idea, and I wish more people would do something like this - just tell me all the main things that I might want to look into to figure out how to do some larger task. In this case, visual effects, and the many pieces of that. I loved your sigh for rotoscoping--probably my least favorite thing to do :P Anyway, thanks for this!
Yes, rotoscoping involves frame-by-frame analyses, but it is not always a frame-by-frame task. In fact, one shouldn't have to adjust much if the fluidity of the rotoscope is adequate.
I'd love to see a video on how to start. Like the very basics of how you get into the world of filmmaking. Should you go to certain classes and how do you build up a career. What are the chances on getting a job, not just for the actors but for the whole team.
Technically rotoscoping isn't cutting someone out, the term is borrowed. It's the process of adding a layer on top of footage (originally, physically drawing over footage). Rotobrushing on the other hand, is using the rotobrush/masking tools to cut someone out so you can get the asset you'll put on top of footage, and VFX kinda just uses the two terms interchangeably.
That was great...thanks man...I was looking for simple definitions to get the idea and concept of what VFX artists do in visual effects...thank alot Please release more videos like this (Y)
How come whenever you guys upload videos it always perfectly coincides with whatever class I'm in. I go to one of those old fashioned real life film schools...
We just had Academy Award-Winning VFX Artist Rick Shick on our show, he had some great insight with over 3 decades of experience in the VFX industry. #gentscofflaw
Could you do a video just like this, but for special effects? It would be very cool to have a list of in camera effect techniques and tricks to practice. Also a video on how to shoot with miniatures (props and sets) with best ways to measure and match scale would be fantastic. I haven't seen many videos on those topics.
This is probably a really dumb question, but why is there a green screen for example at 0:41? Why is green screen needed in that shot?Cant you add the castle in post without the green screen?
Question @ Clinton Jones Do you work on the animation at Rocket Jump or do you just know information about it from previous projects? Because as far as i know, I've only heard of you acting in the short films. Though it's cool if you do both, I just hadn't heard any mention of it.
I love how he sighed when he mentioned rotoscoping. That's the only accurate attitude when it comes to rotoscoping.
Agreed
"Did you just say the client wants me to roto smoke?!"
+RC-1290 "You want me to add 1 frame??"

Wait is that Clint from Corridor crew?!
that's what I was wondering. I think it is. looks like him.
It is
before working w/ the corridor crew , he was at Rocketjump
they hired him because they needed more staff
Yes it’s him
@Mushrif Ahmed plot twist: he is full CG character
I just clicked the video randomly and it made me really interested in learning VFX now. Thanks!

agreed
I've seen so much real smoke in movies thinking that its CG smoke that I now think real smoke looks fake.
k
true that fizz
EXACTLY!!!!
that's me but fire instead of smoke
I’m confused
Wish you had posted this 10 years ago before I spent an ass ton of money going to school for it. Great video I'm glad you shined a light on this complicated little industry
I love to rotoscope, especially when you mess up one frame and you fix it and AE messes up all the other frames for you so you can keep the fun going
HAHHAHAHAHA
You love to rotoscope? You mad lad.
i laughed out loud a painful, gut-wrenching laugh.

I clicked bc i saw Clint, stayed bc i love this channel :))

Do things like this more! 101 so we have something to start learning from
Yeah. You're right
That was a really comprehensible and elaborated discourse on VFX. Thanks a lot!
So cool! Now I know slightly more!
Can't wait to learn so more stuff!
Thank you for explaining all of this. I didn't know the difference between vfx and sfx! That's what hooked me!
Davinci Fusion can do particle effects and CGI, and it uses a full 3D space for compositing.
I think the piece he's missing is the enormous talent you need on top of just learning the tools to make good VFX.
By far the most well explained tutorial on youtube regarding VFX and all different roles and responsibilities in it. Thanks!!!!

Anyway, thanks for this!
This video was really helpful. I've recently started working in 3d fx and knowing this terminology will help me a lot, thank you.
How’s it treating you?
Yes, rotoscoping involves frame-by-frame analyses, but it is not always a frame-by-frame task. In fact, one shouldn't have to adjust much if the fluidity of the rotoscope is adequate.
I was wondering when the minds behind _Epic VFX Time_ would do a VFX video.
Well hello.
i know it is quite randomly asking but do anyone know a good website to stream new movies online?
@Augustus Gregory meh I watch on Flixportal. just search on google for it :P -noe
@Noe Soren thank you, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D Appreciate it!!
@Augustus Gregory happy to help =)
Such a nice simplified explanation. Nice one.

Very well explained! Crystal clear. Loved the video, love to start some tutorials
1st time I've found motion graphics really useful
Awesome video! I keep explaining these things over and over ;) I'd be happy to elaborate the 3D part more, it felt too short. Great stuff!
the people on this works so hard for every frame in the screen

Hold on there *Michael*
Copyright you get sued
