I feel extremely overwhelmed, I never knew that I would get this comfort because of a song. Just imagine drawing something with your less dominant hand. A crooked, less precise, and at some point not really visually appealing, then somebody will say that no matter what your flaws are. You are unique, you are loved, you are valued beyond your expectation. That I value you and appreciate your existence. Even if you don't see your value, you don't see your beauty I see it, so be kind to yourself each individual has their time to bloom. It maybe not yet for you however your time will come, you will bloom prettier than the prettiest flower out there.

in the beginning she’s being all taken care of and everyone is going around putting on makeup for her and taking pictures, and then she sees the “old her”, before she was a huge celebrity, she sees her old self at a cafe and looks through the window, in disguise from her fans, wishing to go back when times were simpler, she starts to feel down until she sees the “old her” again, and as she runs to go back in time (by chasing her old self), she runs into a mirror, realizing she’s still the same IU from 2009 and there is no “old IU”, it’s all just her, and she feels comforted and like herself again.

In my interpretation those lyrics aren't only aimed at fellow idols but also all people in general:
Many of us feel like shit about ourselves on a daily basis. Having widespread fame and a great career doesn't necessarily help with that.
She tells us that it is the people close to us that see the aspects of ourselves we fail to recognize and love us because or despite of them.
We may not be world renown but to those that truly love us "we are their celebrity".
Realizing that and trying to see ourselves through their eyes can help us learn to love ourselves more.
Until we can eventually say "You are my celebrity" to the person we see in the mirror. Like IU does towards the end of the MV.

Came here after watching the clip where she said 'Celebrity' is a new kind of song she never tried before. She wrote the lyrics in hopes that it may give courage or inspire people especially during these trying times. She keeps on trying/exploring new things and it just keeps on being successful everytime!!

its hard to believe she is still a secret in many areas of the world, I found her by accident over 3 yrs ago, my friends only know her because of me raving (sorry, 'raving' = meant talking about her all the time)... I can only guess that she is purposely not wanting to go worldwide and wants the option of traveling through other parts of the world as a regular person (as she did in the U.S. and Italy with Yoo In Na), no bodyguards, no one needing her attention. She's truly the best in the world.

i feel like the mv is about the idol/celebrity losing their true self while trying to be perfect to the public's eyes, IU was trying to find the "other girl" and in the end while trying to chase her again she looks in the mirror and found out that she, herself was the person she was looking for this whole time. and in the end it's just her enjoying herself and being free.

When I first saw the mv, I thought she basically says in the song that even though you have bad days, she just hopes that you look up and see how the people around you love you. That even if you think yourself to be incredibly flawed, and even though others see you as amazing, both those flawed and amazing individuals are you. And that hopefully, in the end you'll be able to accept both your flaws and your strengths, and say to yourself, 'you're my celebrity.'
After that, I read on koreaboo that she wrote the song for a close friend, who 'often drew attention for her eclectric clothing choice and tastes, varied talents and shy nature. However, others treated her as an odd person for it.
'IU loved her friend even more for all these oddities... But the friend lived under scrutiny and hate. She wrote the lyrics based on what she wanted to tell her friend... It blossomed into a fully fledged song.'
She's telling us through the song that even though a lot of times we may find ourselves in the minority, it doesn't mean you're necessarily wrong- just different. (Unless you're doing something illegal or morally unacceptable, duh.) She says that all these things about you make you _you,_ and that even though you feel picked on in that moment, that even though you criticize yourself, it's okay, as long as at the end of the day, you're able to look at yourself in mirror and accept, respect and appreciate yourself.
This is just what I perceive- and what I love about the song is that even though the message is basically the same, different people can have different perceptions of the lyrics and mv. For a lot of people it may have been cheerful, for a lot of others it may have been emotional, and for a lot of people it might have initially been frustrating, and later comforting because at first they're unable to look at themselves in a good light.
And even for the people who aren't, it gives them hope.
But, in the end, IU is encouraging us, and boosting us, and gosh I love her to hell and back.

For me personally, i interpreted this as a song of encouragement from IU to boost my self-confidence. That I don't have to go with the trends. I don't need to pretend to be someone who i'm not just to try to be liked by everyone. I am my own celebrity. We all have our own timeline. Just because others are already ahead of me does not mean that i should sulk and give up. Just like the lyrics "don't forget during the long winter, a flower can bloom between the frozen cracks" which I interpreted as "a time will come and i will be successful". In life there are ups and down. Life isn't full of butterflies and rainbows. It's fine to feel defeated or down but know to stand back up and use those experiences as your stepping stone. Don't dwell on the negative side of life, shift your perspective in life to be positive. Just be yourself, love yourself, and know that you are your own celebrity. No one can dictate who you are. Don't forget among the cloudy dark, you're a star painted with a left hand. Can't you see how beautiful a true uniqueness can be?

My theory for the song
I feel like iu is telling her past self that not to worry and that she is her celebrity . The line " you have no idea above your lowered head what bright lights are shining towards you " means the times she worried that she won't make it to the industry but there is spotlight waiting for her

I think the point of the song is about seeing yourself as a celebrity. Loving and admiring yourself like a celebrity.
When you think of a celebrity, you usually follow their styles and wished that you are them, completely changing yourself without realizing that you are beautiful as you are.
If you noticed the part (55 sec) where IU (all black outfit) saw IU (on the table in a simple dress) and she (black) was like stunned or was attracted to that girl in the table. 😅
Also, towards the end where she goes after someone but ending up in front of a mirror, then she smiled cause she realized she is her own celebrity. 😘😊❤
