Mae West...a true icon! She could act, sing, and dance as well as writing many of her early plays. I have loved her since I was a kid. I have read several books on her and was elated to learn that in real life she was a kind, gracious, and very generous woman. She always treated her fans well and was beloved by her public. Rest in peace Mae, your legacy will never die!
Always loved this film...."Goin to Town" she starts out a cowgirl and ends up a Countess. Only in the movies! great lines like the latin goldigger trying to marry her for her money...after she puts him down a peg he says "what do you mean, I am an aristocrat and the backbone of my family"...Mae..."oh yea, well your family oughta see a chiropracter"...........Mae was the greatest!
Yes she was, she once bought an apartment building because the previous owners didn't rent to black Americans. So she purchased the building and rented to whomever wanted to rent an apartment. She was an amazing one of a kind Brooklyn NY Woman. Love her!!!! She is buried by my Parents. I have paid my respects!!! RIP Mae.
Mae West is wonderful. I just stared to watch the classics and this is acting at its best songs story everything The junk that us out there now junk no heart nothing ! Thank God for classics
People forget she was hellavu singer. Really a black singer in a white body. Through her career she had the highest admiration and respect for black musicians and black culture and did everything the could to get them into her stage and film productions, which at the time was a mountain even she couldn't climb.
I laughed out loud when she said take it easy you'll last longer. Not many people know she wrote most of the good lines. Unfortunately the sensors chopped up a lot of her newer pictures. What a shame!
I liked all of her films set in a contemporary era. I think her character worked best in the current time of the day. I think she looked her best in modern hair and gown. I never understood her apparent fixation on the gay 90's period. I still get a weird warm "rush" when I hear this song and see this scene. It really captures her persona.
One of my favorite lines, can't remember which movie it was from, speaking about a politican, she says "He's so crooked he uses a corkscrew for a ruler!"
Nadie, absolutamente nadie, como la Rubia Platino Mae West. Maravillosa hasta cuando punza con sus comentarios que parecen tontos pero no lo son, encierran una causticidad verdaderamente deliciosa. ¡¡ Te adoro Mae !!
@RealityCalling Mae was the original that all others followed! Try watching her after smoking a joint! OMG! I am laughing my head off! It is difficult not to smile at Mae as she was one of only a handful of famous women who really and truly enjoyed being a woman --- and made an art out of it. She is lovely!
I think it's: that knew me when. Well today there"s the guys in the army of loves forgotten men. I use to play around without any conscience, I just broke hearts left and right. But now I'm a lady, I've learned to be more polite..... But to tell you the truth I'm not sure about that second sentence.. I think there is a little poetic justice going on there.. "-)
Mae became a real Countess when she married my father, Count Guido Deiro when they were appearing together in Vaudeville. They divorced in 1920. See guidodeiro.org
remember when i was 7 i remember seeing her on tv at same time bettyboop was out as i got older i liked both of these ladies i still say betty got her swag from mae west cuz mae know she had that swag
It was confirmed by at the time of her death that she was 5'3. A plethora of publicity photos depict her in modern dresses and gowns. I think her platform shoes made her taller in any garb. She personally seemed to be fixated by the 1890's- strange for such a progressive and modern woman.
can anybody tell me the following three lines after 'let me say there is many a boyfriend...' what i hear doesnt make any sense and its killing me a bit.
Like Mae? Then get the book "Mae West and the Count - Love and Loss on the Vaudeville Stage" ( Amazon, B&N, etc.), and laugh and cry as you read the true story of her early, ( pre-Broadway/Hollywood) Vaudeville career and her never before disclosed second marriage to an Italian nobleman who promoted her first stage appearances.
I don’t know if this information has been lost over the years, but the mention of the army of “forgotten men” is a terrible pun (I don’t believe any disrespect was intended in making a joke) on the veterans of WWI, many of whom returned from the war in terrible physical and mental condition, who were not helped by the military to readjust and who were given no resources. It is much like the aftermath of the Vietnam War and how many sufferers ended up on the streets. These WWI vets were referred to as “Forgotten Men.” Joan Blondell sang a song called “Remember My Forgotten Man” in “Golddiggers of 1933”. th-cam.com/video/fzNcT7wfHj4/w-d-xo.html

I'm with you. Nothing like a good old classic. They don't make them like that anymore.
Still chokes me up all these years later.
There has never been anyone like her!!!
what a song , what a star , what a heart !
I think she was wery attravtive
The stairway Ms West descends is very famous too & glamorously used in many films.
what a dame❤❤❤
Mae West, one of a kind!
That is my Brooklyn Girl. Love her. PBS just recently aired a new documentary about her which was very good.
Love the end where she bows in her hat!
It’s a brilliant flourish. It makes me want to go back in time to experience the Mae West phenomenon of the Thirties.
The magnificent Mae West-a true Lady if ever there was one!
And that voice-the Lady can sing!
""" I use to be Snow White but then I drifted"" She was brilliant
Como la Mae West no hay dos, siempre sera admirada.
Excellent!
NOW I'M A LADY
Words by Irving Kahal and Sam Coslow, music by Sammy Fain, ©1935.
I. As sung by Mae West in the film "Goin' to Town" (1935):
CHORUS: I used to put my heart an' soul in my dancin', to keep the wolf from the door,
But now I'm a lady; don't have to dance anymore.
I'd flirt with handsome men and ask them no questions; I met the best and the worst,
But now I'm a lady; I see their pedigrees first.
Let me say:
There is many a boyfriend
That knew me when,
But today,
They're the guys in the army
Of my forgotten men.
I used to play around without any conscience; I just broke hearts left and right,
But now I'm a lady; I've learned to be more polite.
Hi-de-ho!
Baby, I'm goin' places;
I've made my plan.
Hi-de-ho!
Love is dealin' the aces;
I got my man.
Now step by step I hit the top of the ladder; it was a dangerous climb,
But now I'm a lady; come up and see me sometime.
II. As sung by Joan Morris (accompanied by William Bolcom on piano) on the album "Autumn Leaves" (2015):
VERSE: Gals, take a little lesson from me; you're bound to be OK.
I'm not the gal that I used to be; I've had to change my way.
This is just the start of my story; here is what I wanted to say:
CHORUS: [As above.]
[TH-cam also has a recording by Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra (with a vocalist unknown to me).]
Jim Dixon , I love you , thanks for your post !

11/22/2016 , A STAR ON EARTH , A SAINT IN HEAVEN , R.I.P. MAE WEST , GOD BLESS YOU !!!!!
Wonderful!
i did not know, she was such a good singer!
All the bad girls owe a debt to Mae West!

I LOVE HER TA PIECES!!
SHE WAS A GENIUS
She even wrote her lines . She was one in a million ! Nobody this witty nowadays .

Mae became a real Countess when she married my father, Count Guido Deiro when they were appearing together in Vaudeville. They divorced in 1920. See guidodeiro.org
I bet you have some beautiful and priceless memories growing up.
She was already married to Frank Wallace at that time. They divorced in 1943. They married when Mae was around 20.

What a lady! Seen any lately?
She was the curvy girl before curvy became the desired type. She had a wonderful persona for sure and had no problem stealing the scene every time.
I love her so much she so Bold and sassy better than this boring new address as of today
Classy lady at her best. I thought that she was gorgeous
Depicting a woman who spread her legs to get what she wanted from men?
Yeah...real classy.
It was confirmed by at the time of her death that she was 5'3.
A plethora of publicity photos depict her in modern dresses and gowns. I think her platform shoes made her taller in any garb.

artful use of spectral substitution on the soundtrack :) makes it sound technically like it was recorded a decade later.
I love the Lord! She's totally a beard!
as they say the best things come in small packages,so @oofooh, if you were trying to denegrate her, forget it she was dynamite, oozing sex appeal
