I did these last year. They're harder than Oxide in Nitro Fueled, but much easier than the dev times. Dingo Canyon is actually the hardest one.

Oxide here is kinda what Velo is in Nitro-Fueled,he's a joke in some tracks on this version too though,like Tiny Arena and Dragon Mines.

I really recommend using a speed or acceleration character if you do this again, since penta is an easter egg their controls aren't very balanced. The high turning and speed stats together just make me constantly bump into walls and it's actually harder to build reserves and control in my opinion! 😁
Exactly what I was thinking. The TURN Stat really is an imbalanced stat, so much so that it even makes a character with max stats in every single category actually worse than a character with lower stats in most cases.
@@N.i.E.M.O it's the turn stat that gives problems, some tracks are not good with a high turning character. It's easier to use Dingo/Tiny on more straight tracks

Quick tip: on "Straight" tracks like Coco Park and Crash Cove, Penta can actually make them a bit harder if you're not used to him because of his maxed out Turning, you might wanna go with a Speed character for those.
Second this. The speed characters; Tiny/Dingo/Papu/Tropy are better for more straight tracks since they turn less.
I think the only ones I beat back in the day were skyway and oxide station, because of the massive unintentional shortcuts you could pull off.
On skyway you can turn around and jump over that fence that separates two bits of the track to skip a large chunk of the level, and on station you can jump left off a boost ramp and land on a later bit of track, skipping all the anti gravity jumps

A thing i noticed in the remake is the lack of N. Tropy's dialog after you beat his times/unlock his times, which had some variations

I was kinda under the impression that Oxide's times were the dev times back in CTR. Not as difficult as the ones in Nitro Fueled because those were made after a year of practice and watching the community optimize every niche driving technique known to man.
Just as a tip, the fire in the original works different in the original from nitro fueled. It builds up on reserves then when you go over a boost pad you'll keep a higher speed by not doing mini turbos until your fire runs out. I'm not sure if I explained that well but that's the best I can do.

I'm pretty sure thats only true on Cortex Castle, N.Gin Labs, Hot Air Skyway and Oxide Station

Yes that only works for specific pads and tracks mentioned by SkyVR and also on turbo track, it's a technique "USF - Ultra Sacred Fire" called by CTR community back in the day,
it's basically blue fire from CTRNF but you can't maintain it with mini turbo in any way and it only last as long as you have reserves, to do the trick you need to do only one mini turbo right over the specific pads in mentioned tracks.

Actually you can u-turn in the original too, it was an intended mechanic. However, it's better to not abuse of u-turning in the original because here pressing the brake eats all your reserves.
The og CTR has way more mehcanics and is much more complex than NF. Not to say NF is easy, but it is undeniably easier than the og. I like how NF is tho, and i like how in NF U-turning doesnt kill your reserves, it makes gameplay much smoother. Love driving mehcanics in both, some things i like better in the og, some things i like better in NF, but i still kinda prefer the old mechanics, but i got way too used to the NF ones now

When I was a kid I could only beat oxide station cause of the shortcuts lol.
As someone who's played ths game for 10 years before Nitro Fueled released, I can confirm Nitro Fueled improved the controls. I beat all the Oxide trials in that game(but haven't begun the Velo ones) and in the original, I never beat the Oxide trials, or even a single one, so props to you for beating him in 2 race tracks.
If you do ever decide to continue this, want to make sure you know that blue flame (or ultimate sacred fire, USF for short, in this game) works differently. Once you get it, you want to keep hopping until the boost runs out. Drift boosting with USF replaces your USF with a regular drift boost. If I'm not mistaken the strategy in N Gin Labs is to deliberately avoid USF by avoiding the ramp near the end, and just jumping down to the right to get the earlier one. It's been a while though, haven't played since NF.
Man this brings me back😂 if you ever decide to do more I THINK that you can use a PS4 controller on the PS3 with a wired connection! Would be awesome to see more of this
You're correct but some things dont work like the PS button to return to the PS3 main menu i believe. For gaming purposes though it's a diamond.

I beat Oxide on all the tracks back in the day, the control transition to CTRNF was very strange
Oh yeah same, i was really good at original CTR, USF, froggy, U-Turn, i mastered every possible technique in original CTR, i was like: "bruh CTRNF has nothing on me, i will destroy this game the first day it comes out xDD". Lol modern game physics let me introduce myself in CTR Remaster hahah, oh yeah the transition was really hard for me to adjust from original game to Nitro Fueled. Nonetheless NF is great remaster and it's skill ceiling is amazing and very high which i love about the game.
I'm playing the original and I understand that if you beat all of N. Trophy's times you unlock his character. But what do you unlock when you beat allow of N. Oxide's times?

This brings back memories. I remember being four years old, sitting on the floor behind my brother on a Saturday morning watching him play this game. I think it was the first kart racer I ever played!
I remember when I was little I tried and screamed my ass off trying to beat all his Time Trials thinking I'd unlock him then I finally beat them all and found out you couldn't play as him anyway. I was one very sad kid after that lol
Especially considering that many websites and magazines used to claim that you could actually unlock him by beating his Time Trials. Later on, some of them had revisions with an added disclaimer;
'May not work in some versions of the game'.
This only made me even angrier as a kid. So you mean to tell me that I went through all that trouble and I just happened to be unlucky enough to own a version of the game that doesn't work? It wouldn't be until many years after the game's release that the internet would provide the truth: you can't unlock him in ANY version.

Honestly PAL Penta is a double edged sword, max speed and acceleration is great but personally i hate high turning, i've never managed to master that build.
Still technically an improvement over NTSC Penta, who was a straight-up clone of Pura/Polar.
I always wondered why they made Penta's stats different between PAL and NTSC.
@@mattb6522 Because the game had already been ready for launch before Naughty Dog wanted to fully polish him. That’s why he has the infamous “Penguin Yay 1” and “Penguin Yay 2” lines, and other bugs in the final NTSC release.
I think using Penta, who has max turning stat, was a mistake here.
Definitely, for circle tracks it is better to use speed characters
I think the Blizzard Bluff shortcut is intentional in the original. Beta footage of the track didn’t have the fence initially, and they added in the fence _and the bump before the fence_ in the final

the original ctr controls actually feel more smoother to turn and powerslide than nitro kart to me but i love them both
I just checked to see how many I’ve done on the original and was very surprised to see I’ve actually completed them all. Remember nitro fuelled being easier for most of them apart from dragon mines. We don’t talk about dragon mines
The original does have u-turn, but you lose your reserves
Play on an emulator, then config the controller you want. An oxide series would be cool
A few turbo pads work different on the original: polar pass doesn't have usf and that "tunnel" in oxide station gives usf too

I would love to see you try to conquer all the time trials in the original CTR too. I managed to beat all of them except Dingo Canyon and Papu's Pyramid.

This game is so nostalgic for me! Played it so much as a kid, even nowadays on emulators. Its soooo good
The original game actually got the wall collision correct unlike the recent one. Have to say the original got a lot more right than CTRNF unfortunately including chaining drifts. You often miss out on getting a drift boost on NF because they didn't properly code the buttons so sometimes you miss out even when you press it, unlike the original.

I remember when I beat all the Oxide challenges in the PS1, using mostly Tiny Tiger or Komodo Joe for tracks with a lot of curves. Some tracks like Papu's Pyramid were really hard for me.
One of my strongest memories with this game is that I superglued my hands together after playing it

Penta in USA(NTSC-U) version is like polar, only full TURNING. Penta MAX STAT is in Europe(PAL) and Japan(NTSC-J) version
If you plan on doing more of these/any stuff with ps3 in general I'd suggest you connect your ps4 controller to the ps3.. The difference really is huge

I didnt see THAT coming. Also OG Oxide times are rather easy.
In fact, i made an experiment to show the difference between the OG CTR N.tropy times and Oxide times and the Nitro Fueled ones...
The oxide times are fairly similar.
But N.tropy is ALL OVER the place with his times.
Either they are too slow, or a bit better.
Which makes sense since, N.tropy in the original CTR was NOT USING SHORTCUTS. Just speed and occasional boosts, where Oxide, boosts and takes ALL shortcuts.
In Nitro Fueled. I believe N.tropy DOES take some shortcuts.
So lots of differences.

I used to play this game with Ripper Roo as a teen, but coming back to it, Coco feels closest to Nitro Fueled.
You can use the PS4 controller on PS3 games if it's plugged in. It's mostly only the Home button that doesn't work on it, which you still need the PS3 controller for to access it.
Dingo Canyon and Blizzard Bluff are the hardest tracks to beat Oxide on;believe it or not,Dragon Mines is a walk in the park in the ps1 version
Are you on the NTSC version?
If so your penta is a turning character (seems yes to me, I have never tried versions with Penta having perfect stats) which sucks as in CTRNF since they are not good at going straight while drifting.

Going straight with Penta, Polar and Pura isn't the only issue here; handling drivers are awfully slow on the NTSC version as well. The best option in Lewis' case is either Dingo or Tiny.
No NTSC doesn't have languages on the main menu
He is on PAL, he has languages in the menu. But penta is 7/7/7 max turn max accel max speed, so it is difficult to control him on circle tracks like coco park

As someone said, it is better to use Advanced characters like Tiny, Dingodile or N. Tropy for short tracks since turning is not that important in those. Interestingly, Dragon Mines is rather easy in this version because Oxide is a total disaster in the spiral turn xD

I did all the oxide times back in the day. Have also done the dev times in NF. I've been wondering what it would be like, how hard it would be, etc.
Also, use speed class for those kinds of tracks! Penta's turning is often too sharp to be useful.

Picking Penta of all characters to get your drifts on as you try to acclimatize yourself to the original CTR was probably a handicap for you. Max stats, yes, but that includes the turning radius being *very* tight and this is really throwing your drift attempts out the window on maps like Coco Park. Should have gone with Dingodile or Tiny for their speed engine and wide drift curves.

Yessss I adored CTR growing up it was my favourite game!
As someone who beat oxide on all tracks, I will simply say that coco park, or any other track without any major shortcuts are usually the worst to take on Oxide on back in CTR.
It took me about a year to complete in high school but I also had extra curricular activities.
Penta is not best choice to do coco park, you should play as an advanced character (dingodile, tiny, papu,n.tropy) they do great on tracks with no tight turns,
that's why you can't do so many power slides
love the classic one, yes the controller sucks but the sound and nostalgia for me is the best. I beat all oxide before the remaster and now I demand you do the same lol

After my efforts on the remake, I was able to get all of the original game's Platinum Relics and beat the N. Trophy times, but I will never do the Oxide Times. I'm too used to the alternate controls in Nitro-Fueled.
Lewis, you might want to look into a CTR mod called Retro Fueled, which gives OG the physics of NF, so you can do things like U Turns. I believe there's also an extra hard difficulty mod as well, and then of course there's Beta's Randomizer.
At first I thought you downgraded the quality of your webcam to match the graphics of the game, then I realized youtube chose 360p automatically for some reason. I was let down... CTR is THE ultimate game that I grew up with (the second game was Crash Bash).

To let you know the reason for a loud ps3 is that there's dustnin the console and that it's forcingthe fan to work overtime. So all it needs is a good cleaning out

Being a turn main, PAL Penta is loads of fun to play.
More CTR :) 1 Tip if you're gonna be doing this, So the "Blue fire" boost pads in this game is best used by just hopping afterwards, that way your "blue flame speed" is gonna continue. You of course need to build up reserves before the "blue flame"
You can use the ps4 controller on the ps3 btw, just plug it in as normal and it should work. Some ps3 games arent compatible with it, but I played most of the first Metal Gear Solid with the ps4 controller
One of the best ps1 games ever made
the U-Turn did work but in the original you lose all your reserves when you U-Trun
As a heads up you can plug a PS4 controller into the PS3 via a USB cable and it'll work on PS1 games.
You lose the ability to exit through the playstation menu button since they didn't map it but you can just turn the console off and on.
