To my somewhat shame, I have seen the movie exactly…once.
Wanted to see it at least twice, given I was WAY more into it than the first film, but I just kinda… never got around to it.

I've seen it 16 times. Like you I just felt the need to see it again and again and again.
And I've seen it in every format imaginable. I live in Los Angeles so I have that privilege. Dolby 4K 3D was easily the best. Blew IMAX away in my opinion and I have one hell of an INAX theater to go to (TCL Chinese).
My longest viewing gap was between 15 and 16. Two weeks. I thought I was done. 15 viewings was exactly 48 hours and I was like okay done. One hell of a conversation starter.
Then I was like shit... gotta do this again. Nabbed the last Dolby showing before it was booted for (spits) Ant-Man
Anyway... oel ngati kameie. Also, I disagree that it's better in theaters! I just like the movie. Like it's plot and it's story. I am deeply invested. I'll pop in an Avatar 2 Blu-Ray and watch it frequently and enjoy the hell out of it the same way I do with Avatar. Avatar has rushed to become my favorite franchise of all time.
Anyhoo, great video! Been looking forward to this since I followed you on Twitter.

First of all, thank you so much for making this video! There really isn't enough good Avatar 2 content out there.
    Some thoughts:
12:27: Describing Avatar 2 as a transcendent experience that only happens in that moment and that will never be replicated again, rings sooo true to me. I’ve seen the movie 5 times now and I really have to force myself not to go see it again. It really is post-avatar depression setting in for me. But the fact that this experience is temporal makes it infinitely more special. My favorite viewing was with my parents. At the end of the movie, both my mum and my dad were crying. It felt so special and moving and it will never be repeated.
24:00 Characters and Performances: something that kinda bothers me in most reviews of Avatar 2 is how the main characters (Lo’ak) and some of the major supporting characters (Neteyam, Tuk, Tsireya) are not even mentioned when talking about performances. Maybe it’s because we all know Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver etc. but I think it does a major disservice to the amazing work done by the child actors Britain Dalton, Jamie Flatters, Bailey Bass etc. in the movie. I’m looking forward even more to the sequels now because of these amazing new characters. So I was really glad that you at least talked about Lo’ak and Neteyam in the end. They were by far my favorite character dynamic in the movie.
Something that never really gets mentioned at all (I feel like at least): This movie is incredibly funny! Not in a self-aware, ironic, illusion-breaking way, the humor is instead very dry and subtle. It’s often transported by the way characters make faces in the background or small interactions that you will easily miss. My favorite examples: Neytiri grabbing her bow when meeting the Metkayina for the first time and Jake telling her to leave it, every face Tonowari makes, Neytiri dropping the carpet…
Fitting with the subtle humor, I think a lot of what makes this movie great on a story level is just lost in the first viewing because you are just so overwhelmed with the visuals. I heard some people say with a straight face that Jake has no character arc in this movie which is just objectively wrong… But I guess the reason is that when you only watch it one time, chances are that you may just miss his transition from someone who wants to run away from problems to not endanger his kids (which endangers them even more in the end) to pro-active leader. After my first watching, I was also very disappointed because I felt like the story did not go anywhere. While in fact, the story just went to different, more personal places than I expected.
Ok, this was way more than I originally planned to write but hey… where if not here under the video of someone who watched Avatar 2 for 24 hours

I really think that plot is why you watch a movie once, but story is why you watch it again. If we only cared about the events that transpired in movies we wouldn't need to watch anything more than once, since we could just recall those events and be satisfied in remembering them, but the story is where all the beauty and heart and fun is, and it's why we want to experience things again.
This was a wonderful video! I could listen to people gush about things they love all day.

Walking into the theater to watch Avatar: The Way Of Water, I can’t say I was overly excited. However, walking out of the theater, I felt like I’d seen things I’d never seen before and may never see again, and even if the story is “simple,” I was on the edge of my seat and genuinely cared in a way I didn’t think I would! I hope to see this again in theaters and I will gladly watch each new installment!

So glad you went on passionately about the theatrical experience. It's like reading a book through someone else telling you about it, or looking at a painting through your phone. There's times for both, but also part of the reason why Marvel movies suddenly became hated on when Disney+ appeared (many reasons, but one of them) is that they just don't look as good on Disney+, where they can be picked apart with ease. James Cameron is one of those. Just as Spielberg, just as (many) Indian blockbusters, just as Ridley Scott, just as Denis Villeneuve and Christopher Nolan and M. Night Shyamalan and Tom Cruise's movies, the crowd is crucial, the big screen is absolutely essential because you're giving yourself over completely to the vision. That's why Broadway kids are crazy! They literally can't do what they do without community!
He's never been about plot (maybe T2 is the only one). The Terminator is just about the chase, Aliens about the thrill, The Abyss about joy, True Lies...divorce, Titanic about the tragedy, Avatar about the education & wonder. He, like the great directors, is far too easy to take for granted.
Lovely ending too, I do much of the same. I do watch movies often, but I make sure to watch them only in the mornings so I can think about them during the day, and I do have a Letterboxd but always wait until around the end of the month to write anything just to let myself really feel it. Such an important thing to do with any art.

The last few minutes made me realise why I have a much stronger connection to movies I watched when I was younger than the movies I watch today, even the ones I actually really liked. It's not just the nostalgia, but also the fact I used to rewatch movies a looot. Like I could recite them line by line 😂
Even the ones I didn't love, I'd watch again. it was basically kid me's equivalent of flicking through the TV channels.
Apart from having way more free time, there also just wasn't much else to distract me like the much larger plethora of online content today, and nowadays I often lack the energy to engage with a whole movie after work.
I also don't think I realised how much rewatching can give you different experiences and perspectives of the work, but referring to a different form of art, there are a lot of songs I only kinda liked when I added them to my playlist but after a few more listens I grew to love them. So why shouldn't it be the same with movies?
I've been meaning to rewatch Puss in Boot 2 for a while since it's the movie I most recently watched in cinemas, maybe this week I finally will. Let me finish varnishing these doors first :P your video has been keeping me company while I do that, I love your enthusiasm and passion for the art of filmmaking ^^

i just learned about the concept of not making the whole movie about the plot this year! It was artists like u talking about Avatar 2 that woke me up to that fact, and it was confirmed yesterday after I got done watching Iñárritu's "Bardo". I watched the first 10 minutes, got completely lost, then decided to watch a youtube video of a movie review actually hoping that they would INCLUDE SPOILERS lol I usually don't like to watch a movie when I already know what's going to happen, but I decided to do that because I didn't want to miss out on what everybody was calling a masterpiece, and at the same time I did not want to get lost while watching it. James Hancock's review, which included the spoilers i needed for my mind to be at ease, and in that video he pointed out that the movie was not about the plot at all, hence the full title of the movie hinting at the fact that u don't have to know what really happened and what was made up.
With that in mind, I was able to enjoy the movie for the masterpiece it truly was intended to be. I soaked up the cinematography, and enjoyed extracting messages out of various scenes instead of asking myself "what the hell is happening right now?", and I fully appreciated Iñárritu's artistry in conveying the complexity of identity and self-worth.

In the trailers for the 1997 SW special editions, there’s a line in there: “If you have only seen (Star Wars) on the TV screen, you haven’t seen it at all.” That very line can be applied to Avatar. I only saw the first Avatar on TV and I wasn’t impressed. I saw Avatar 2 in theaters and fell in love with it.
I don’t think this is ever possible, but I honestly wish the only way that you can see the Avatar films is theaters. Because if you take the theatrical experience away, it’s only half the experience James Cameron wants you to have and it’s unfortunate that some people who didn’t see it in cinemas are going to look at this film and just say “Overrated. How did this make $2 Billion?” It’s because it’s built for theaters and theaters exclusively. And if you only experience it on TV, you aren’t going to get anything close to the experience Cameron wants to give you.
I guess this just means when this movie gets re-released in theaters for Avatar 3, I’ll have to check it out then.

I don't love the movies, I (want to) love the world of avatar and that's partially why I have a hate love relationship with this 5 part to be Blockbuster.
To me it just feels like it betrays its own themes and is becoming lazier knowing how explorations for the original sound track went and seeing the expansion to the universe in the sequel being ripped straight from dinosaur fossils and our current ocean. I suppose I'm more in love with what could have been and just angry at the corporate need to squash anything too alien, even when exploring aliens lol. The story it tells has been told more iconicly before and sitting, knowing where the world started and how it got watered down for blockbuster tastes to maximise appeal is borderline heartbreaking. So much actual soal thrown away for money and personal games. But if that's just Cameron having fun with Pandora then it's even more disappointing and less impressive and feels borderline disrespectful to all the people whose ideas were thrown away to make way for audience taste suitable unoriginality.
Also hating the idea of plot and seeing it as an enemy seems silly to no end. Especially from a writer... Maybe that's why it was so incoherent with connecting back to the first movie.
Also bragging about technology is seen as quite tacky nowadays... and feels like a really ironic thing to enjoy about a movie whose predecessor was lauded for it.
And your self insert character being a literal Navi Jesus is not necessarily the growth/sincerity I felt like the video noted it as lol.

As someone who really does not like the avatar franchise, this makes a great argument.
