My friend in CA tells me that all the time. I guess by now, most buildings are constructed to handle earthquakes and anything that would have been endangered has already collapsed or been removed. (Out here on the East Coast, that level would 'ring' up and down the entire coastline because our geology is much different than West Coast.)
ive grown in up in california, this is the maybe the fourth quake thats been over 4.0 just this year alone... I only felt 3 in the span of maybe 20 years prior that.
Exactly! Other states have things like fire drills, or tornado drills in classrooms. Growing up in the Valley (San Fernando) in the late 60s, early 70s, I still remember having 'earthquake drills'. We'd all get on the floor, under our desks, with our hands covering the back of our necks. I wonder if they still do that down there? And yeah, 5.0 is nothing, as we all clearly saw. I will never, ever forget the one that happened in '71 or so.... the 'BIG ONE', that brought down freeway overpasses and hospitals. I was in like, the 1st grade, getting ready for school with my brother. One moment everything was normal, the next it was pitch darkness and someone had turned our house into a giant popcorn machine! We were getting tossed around like dolls, getting smashed into by furniture, crawling on our hands and knees, our mom screaming for us to, 'get into the hall!', and us screaming back, 'we can't find it!'. When it was over, we found cracks in our driveway that were at least 8" wide! Now THAT was an earthquake! (7. something or other, I believe. It was intense!)
Shouldn't risk it? What were they going to do? Or supposed to do? You can't run away from an earthquake. You can't hide from one and you really can't shelter from one, either. Sure, maybe get out from under the lights, but I'm sure they had the studio lights hung in a way that an earthquake couldn't easily knock them down, seeing as the studio is in Glendale. They get little earthquakes like that down there all the time. Sure, there's a bit of danger with every earthquake, but, there ain't a whole lot you can do about it, as you can't predict when, or exactly where it'll happen, or for how long it will last. So, 'they shouldn't risk it', doesn't make a lot of sense. I guess the only way to 'not risk it', is to 'not be in Southern California' when an earthquake happens there. LoL People that live there are used to it.
That's Marc Cota-Robles, one of our long-time ABC7 LA reporters/anchors. He's the picture of calm....and his, "she's looking up at the ceiling" comment was hilarious!.
I'm about 15 miles west of them in Northridge, closer to this quake. It was a brief, sharp, jolt. A friend of mine in Porter Ranch, about five miles north of me, didn't feel a thing. With these smaller quakes, you just never know if you'll feel it. The ShakeAlert app on my phone did go off, but about 10 seconds after I felt the quake.

I believe the alerts go out to people within a 10-20 mile range. I was about 15 miles from the epicenter and my alert went off about a second after the shaking started. The previous alert got to me about a second before the shaking started (the quake near Grapevine recently). I think it's a fantastic service and allowed me to get under my work desk before the shaking got intense. This was a mild roller, as was the Grapevine, and I can live with those anytime.
