It’s often known as Iterative Failure - sometimes I also call it “spaghetti testing” ‘cause it just feels like throwing spaghetti at a wall & seeing if it sticks - is all about using low-stakes tests where failure is okay & just as much an answer that helps move forward.
You have to look at How it failed for you, and identifying those weaknesses & why the weapon choice didn’t work will teach you A Lot about what does work

Tips for finding new mains:
Play Turf War with random weapons. This is why Turf War is here, you don't get punished yet can still get valuable experience. At the start of the game I could only play octobrush. Now, using this method, I can confidently play Dapple Nouveau, Exploser, and Tent.
Play Opens, tbh. You lose so few points on a loss it basically doesn't matter, and learning how the weapons work in the modes you'll be using it is way more valuable than not losing a whole 5 points now and then. You only have to hit a 2:3 win/loss ratio to stay positive. Even fewer if you're at lower ranks.
I'm going through 1-starring the weapons right now and there's been a bunch of fun surprises with weapons that I wouldn't have considered otherwise. Turns out Blob Deco is very fun.

As an additional bonus to trying out different weapons. Having first hand experience with how a weapon plays doesn’t just help you when you are playing that weapon. It also helps you when you are playing against it. So far this season I’ve been solo maining the light tetra dualies in order to get them to the level of my other weapons in my weapon pool. Does that mean my experience with my other weapons in the pool is worthless here? No! The knowledge I learned from playing octobrush for so long helps out a lot whenever I have to go up against an octobrush. I know what spots it can zone me out from and where it is weak. Playing other weapons aside from your main will give you a clearer picture on how those weapons work that still helps you on your main.
One thing I think is worth noting as well, since weapon choice can impact every aspect of your play, that means your weapon choice can also impact your mentality and tilt. For example, if there's one weapon you REALLY want to learn but it's mid to low tier and can be countered a lot, you not knowing the weapon well won't be able to get out of those disadvantageous situations and could end up dying a lot, which affects your mental. On the other side of things, like Gem says in the video, there might be a high tier that you know works well in the metagame, but if you feel like you've forced yourself into learning that weapon and you aren't having fun with the game anymore, then you'll stop having fun with the game and eventually stop playing entirely if you keep forcing yourself to play that weapon. Neither of those outcomes are guaranteed, there are a ton of low tiers that I've personally enjoyed playing and there are likely low tiers you've enjoyed playing as well, and maybe that high tier is a fun and unique weapon for you compared to what you normally play. The one thing I will say for sure from this semi-casual's perspective to other semi-casuals (pretty much if you play Anarchy up to something like A rank), play the weapon(s) you have the most fun playing. I might like playing Anarchy (and Ranked back in Splat2) but I'm personally not too concerned with the metagame and just play the weapons I like which means I get decent at those weapons. If you happen to be at all similar to me, don't stress yourself about the metagame too much. And if you want to get more competitive, great! Take Gem's advice over mine for the most part because I know I have no clue what I'm talking about when it comes to competitive. But still, try to let yourself play a weapon you enjoy playing. That can make or break the way you play a game.
Never drop a weapon. The enemy will splat you when you reach down to pick it up.
I’ve been playing Undercover Brella since Splatoon 2 and I’ve been doing my best to make it work in Splatoon 3. I don’t main anything in the Brella class anymore, but the thumbnail for this video still touched me right in my soul. Just a little pain. I’ll be alright. Nintendo, please give us Kunder and a better Splat Brella. Don’t make a grown man cry.

I run mostly QR wiper or tri-slosher for comp, but it’s been fun to every so often experiment with Frontline Ballpoint, especially in Rainmaker - that thing Shreds people who aren’t expecting it to be close up & using the close-range mode

Im really lucky as a primarily slosher deco player that there are ao many viable picks in the slosher class. Recently I've been working to get used to vslosh's less aggressive positioning since its seeing alot of use
Im honestly glad that vslosher and deco is getting more use. It was overshadowed by machine before its harsh nerf. Machine is for snobs.
If we're talking strictly competitive, for most video games in general I think it's generally a better idea to stick with a less than optimal choice that you're amazing with as opposed to a top tier that you have no idea how to use. But if it gets to the point where something you're good with is simply outclassed by others in its category then you should consider picking one of those up. Or if a different thing you use with a greater ease of use will provide equal or greater results, then it's typically time to bench the less applicable choice in favor of training on that one instead. However, since most choices will at least have a decent niche or two it's always good to have a situational secondary, that way if you're good with something that isn't as widely usable and think it will provide more matchup-based value than something else then it could work out better.
When the game released I used my 3 Gold Sheldon Licenses on the three weapons I was most interested in playing at launch. Range Blaster, Stringer, and Brella. I only play Range out of these 3 now. Though another patch to help Brella's might change this.

Once I realized I no longer enjoyed splatlings and chargers. I dropped them weeks later cause I didn’t want to let go of the weapons I originally picked up. But it’s fine to have a more free will to just play whatever

Personal ancedote: I've found making a teirlist to be excellent an excellent organizing my thoughts on what weapons I like playing or might enjoy playing. Ranking things based on how fun I found playing them up to 1 star gave me a pretty good idea which ones were worth revisiting and which ones I could leave to forever languish.
I have a personal rule, to know how to play at least 1 weapon from each class, just in case I really need to switch to something fresher if I'm feeling frustrated with certain other options. Even then, it is obvious that my personal rhythm and type of gameplay make me feel more comfortable with Brushes, Blasters, and Mid-Ranged Shooters. And THEN AGAIN, I consider the Undercover Brella my secret Main-Main (If that makes sense), something that I will always use regardless of the context just because I have both fun and good results in matches where I use it, some friends even call me a masochist for unlocking all of its stickers, but I do great and I have fun :'DD
Recently I started to play with Splatanas and Dualies more often, and I'm constantly watching streams from X-Battle players that are amazing with said weapons, and I don't have any fear of leaving them comments. What do you think of this weapon? How do you use it?. They have the kindness of answering, and by god, I swear, every little bit of information they gave to me, I transcribe to numerous (.TXT) documents across my PC, then I go and try them in Anarchy-Open for one or two days.
In my personal opinion, any kind of OTP (One trick pony) is just as strong and as respectable as any Jack of all trades. I just love to watch the technical details from afar and inside, when I'm in the fray.

I’m a splat dualies main, and I’m really glad this video was made because I’ve had this same issue with the S-Blast. I find it super fun to play, but struggle to get anything done with it
as someone whose been playing since splat1 and i have a whole lot more experience than my friends, but nowhere close to the current meta, this video helps a whole lot! i find myself getting bored or even on losing streaks with weapons that i main the most so i try new ones but feel discouraged because its a /new weapon/ and im doing pretty poorly. seeing something moreso as a successful experiment feels a lot more encouraging to hear.
in my experience, ive found that watching players who main weapons that are kinda opposite play styles of mine (i tend to main rollers, while i love to watch e-liters/splatterscopes) can help me both learn how those play styles work while also learning strategies to play against them in ranked battles. even just watching those who arent like, top tier players helps me.

I'd been learning more and more weapons leading up to the Sizzle Season. I spent time one tricking rapid pro, then stamper, and then I dual mained stamper and rapid deco. Eventually I found out I really enjoyed other weapons like tri slosher and machine. I even finally found weapons I enjoy that can paint in ballpoint and 52 gal.
The thing I've learned to do the most with regards to weapons is "find the weapon that works with the game mode". Currently, I'm messing about with base Dualies and Splash in Turf to get used to aggressive weapons, but I just finished some Anarchy Series on the Current Rotation (Tower Control) and found that Zink Mini is really effective for helping to support push the Tower with Disruptor and Big Bubble; which is funny cuz I wrote them off initially.

Not long before Sizzle Season I bought the rapid pro since I knew it was going to get a new kit. Before I bought it, I thought it would be almost exactly the same as normal rapid blaster, which I didn't like playing too much- but then I quickly realized that I really liked it
ik a lot of people will have Opinions about this, but honestly playing a decent amount of salmon run can give you a pretty good understanding of every weapon/weapon class. obviously it is a different skillset than playing against real people versus AI salmonids, but it helps to at least get familiar with weapons youre inexperienced with
not sure how this would effect non-casual play but as the salmon run player of my friends i am fairly able to play whatever is needed the few times i play ranked with them
albeit very poorly humans are much harder to fight than fish with specific weaknesses
I have a 4 star challenge for me and my team to help us use new weapons.
To sum it up
1. You must get one four star in each weapon category
2. It must be relatively new weapons (under 3 stars)
3. You can always swap out the weapons you were trying to four star at anytime, just complete the goal eventually.
No time limit, everyone can move at their own pace.
And I've seen great results for myself

but at this point, Inkbrush is sidelined.
I enjoy playing Tri-Slosher N. a lot and learned that I enjoy ballpoint and 52. Gal thanks to this challenge.
it's a fun way to get my team, who are all inexperienced in comp, to expand their weapon pools and find weapons they may genuinely enjoy using.
I've been playing basically nothing but the Splattershot Jr. ever since the game came out because nothing else was feeling right. Then the random weapons challenge rolled around, and among all of the heavy clunky weapons that wound up in my hands, I had a surprisingly comfortable time with one that I honestly tend to forget about a lot: the L-3 Nozzlenose D. Ever since I've found myself sticking to it and having a decent amount of success with it.
I have this problem where I feel like the way I play Inkbrush is way too difficult to translate into other weapons. The ability to ignore all types of terrain and fight on enemy turf is just such a nice thing to have. I could play a shooter with a similar playstyle, but I have terrible aim since Sp3 is the only game I've played in the series (and I've played inkbrush almost exclusively) and I play on handheld since I have no TV. I've been wanting to find a second main for a while, but sacrificing the high mobility and no aiming is a bit rough.
I've decided in the end to start trying out Trislosher to compensate for my poor aim. It's not going so great and I keep forgetting I can't just ignore terrain, but I enjoy it. Hopefully I'll be able to add more weapons to my repertoire.
aim is a very important skill to have so i hope since this comment youve taken the time to develop it instead of ignoring it, itll only get harder to do so
try not to fall into the trap of learning to "work around" weak areas that can realistically be improved cuz at one point or another youre gonna have to address them directly... and not trying to be rude just giving advice as a splat1 veteran
In casual and ranked, I found myself enjoying mid/long area denial weapons so I go with Blob, Range Blaster and Rapid, Custom Jet Squelcher. It's tempting to add a charger and maybe 96 to the mix, but maybe I should focus on the ones I use now.
During most of splatoon 2 i played vanilla inkbrush and somehow made splashdown work. This game i tried playing v inkbrush wasnt my thing but the splatanas (yes all of them) became a weapon i started playing i then flexed back to the inkbrush nouveau since i was used to the ultrastamp. Splatoon 3 i wanted to play range blaster and so i did for quite a while and now im learning the s blast and the ballpoint. Not sure if i have too many weapons or not
this is the same dilemma i had with explosher after sizzle season started as a mostly solo player. when it came down to it, being able to reliably get kills was a more effective way of supporting whatever team matchmaking would put me on rather than just making sure the zone was consistently painting and throwing ink storms out to break up enemy formation around the zone or to recapture it.
this isnt to say i didnt search for kills whilst using explosher, its just that a lot of the time due to the main weapons poor movement i would require a follow-up from a teammate for that kill to actually happen - and for better or for worse you and your solo queue teammates rarely operate on the same amount of game knowledge as you or eachother. explosher was my dead to rights zones pick for pretty much any zones rotation, and now its noticably decreased effectiveness has left me scrambling for other weapons that cant reach that same peak pre-sizzle explosher could reliably get for me.
im still going to periodically use it, since its the weapon i have the most confidence in using to its full ability, but im always gonna be using other zones picks more from now on - until it gets a much more aggressive alternate kit that leans into the same playstyle that ballpoint currently excels in, which... a guy can dream alright?

Funny me playing splash like i always do at launch questioning what the meta is gonna end up being. Uh opps. I mean i had a ton of moments where i got like 3 or 4 kills with crab tank alone because at launch no one knew how to counter it and when that happens a lot i was like "oh- oh that's a problem" but it felt so good to do. Reminds me when splash had inkzooka in s1
I think I have a serious problem when it comes to dropping weapons: I like playing slayers backliners AND supports. Also, most of the current weapons I play aren’t very effective according to squid school’s latest tier list. Is it ok that I want to play such different weapons and so many weapons?
I have a feeling I might have asked this before but if I did I can’t remember the answer 😅
(In x rank I’ve had success with: the splat roller, tri slosher nouveau, clash blaster, splash o matic, octobrush, forge pro, jr, splatana wiper, custom jr, rapid pro, splatling, and even a little bit of z+f charger)
Never gonna' give up on my precious Uncercover Brella. My goal isn't to be the best--it's to go as far as I can with the weapon.
Gem try not to give dating advice challenge: impossible (will always fail)
I didn't play any shooter weapons for the longest time because I thought they were boring, then I picked up ttek and 52 gal and realized they actually fit my play style way better than any other class. not to mention shooters get way better kits than most other classes and many shooters share similarities that make it very easy to swap between them without altering playstyle too much. I went from S to S+10 In 2 months after switching to shooters, if you think you're bad at the game, you might just be using the wrong weapon.
ZF Splatterscope, Ttek Splattershot, and Sloshing Machine are my mains. Success varies quite a bit, but I only started playing ranked recently.
Machine was a big part of my weapon cool pre-patch, and then I completely dropped it because I couldn’t play it well anymore. I then switched to purely frontlines to stick to 1 playstyle
Should I try learning how to play top teir specials because I can't play ink jet, ink vac or the web special and some weapons that seem really good to me always ends up having a special I can't uses.
I know Undercover isn’t good, and my W/L ratio can suffer with it, but it’s fun. No other weapon is that fun to me.

I still haven't recovered after the machine nerf. Maybe it was a too perfect weapon (easily going from defensive to aggro mode) and I put too much hours on it. Now I feel that's almost unplayable and even if i can fairly use other weapons (tentatek and heavy splatling mostly) nothing brings me joy, I always feel underskilled... It's sucks! I hope to find again a weapon that brings me the same joy I had with the machine
I know brellas are bad but I despise playing practically everything else so I’ll make do 💀

I've heard a lot bad press about the dapple dualies noveau because of its similarity to the dark tetras, it made me question whether or not I should continue maining them. So, I tried out the dark tetras yesterday and the one thing I just don't like about it is its dodge roll, its so subtle and slow sometimes I don't know I'm doing it and it just feels like I'm slightly sliding a few inches instead of roll here and there like dapples, Hope you guys understand. I do love autobomb though I sometimes I use it more than the main weapon and it's real nice having more range so I don't have to keep trading with brushes. Any tetra or dapple noveau mains that could help?

Yeah, it's basically casual ranked, you won't lose many points by losing and you still are playing against people from the same rank as you, so that's a perfect place to experiment and go wild with your weapons
i currently play 3 weapons (mostly) that are all awful. they cover my bases, but not well. i don't feel like i would get to a point with many other weapons outside of those 3 where i would both enjoy playing the game and be able to actually contribute positively to my team
paradoxically, i find myself still doing extremely well with them at my current level (let's say top of low ink or so). it seems more like my understanding of how to play the game is good enough for me to win in spite of the weapons i play. the result is that i feel like i might be holding my team or others i play with back due to my odd choice in weapons, but i also only feel like i'm getting better at the game on these 3 weapons
range blaster, sploosh, and dynamo by the way
all of those weapons play super differently from one another, i don't really see why you would need to play all 3 unless there were issues with your team's weapon pool

I've played both range and dynamo since 2, and I used to feel this way.
I wouldn't say range is awful; it's amazing in tc and solid in cb. However, I've been playing more sblast recently, and I can confidently say that sblast is better than range in almost everything except cb. It's tricky to get used to but I'd recommend at least trying to pick it up
Dynamo...I can't help as much lol. Closest thing I'd say to try would be flingza, simply because it positions similarly and missiles isn't niche like cooler is.

I used to be a roller main, it was basically the only weapon class I found fun. But once I picked up cjr to mix things up, it was both a lot of fun and my win/loss ratio became a lot better. Got to S rank with cjr and I plan on taking it to X battles with me, even tho it’s low tier. It just works for me a lot.
I still pick up rollers every now and then, but only for fun. I’m just terrible with them in ranked lmao

ok so i’m a rapid deco main but I want to pick up a secondary. Im looking for something with a similar play style (skirmisher, flanker) I’m also comfortable with shooters as my former main was SJR/CJR
if you're looking for a skirmisher weapon, then go for tetras, they're quite hard to use at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's almost impossible to drop off of it

In an early video about picking your main, @BananaBoySSB said “Don’t play any new characters until you’ve won a tournament with your main.” Here, you seem to be saying that’s a bad idea. He was referring to Smash Bros, not Splatoon, so does the difference come down to it being different games, or do you think it was just bad advice?

Just had to drop the nautilus and it sucks because I'm SO close to 5 stars, but I just play way better with my other mains, I just don't think the nautilus is for me, even though it's fun as hell

I just started playing three days ago. As a new player I just start switching if I get on a lose streak. Tells me what I’m doing isn’t working and need to swap what I’m doing
Play all the weapons at least a little bit and pick the ones you like the most to focus on and specialize in. Then stick to those and just take a break if you're on a losing streak
