    Here is my thought process for creating my homeschool Year-at-a-Glance document. I make a general schedule for my kiddo for the whole year; this helps me see how things are going to fall into place and where I might have any gaps. Please let me know if you have questions!

    A quick tip for filling in your page. When you type Lesson 1; press control enter and it will give you a cross in the bottom right corner. Grab that cross and drag it to Week 36 and it will automatically fill it all in for you. I am hoping this tip works for you!

      Maree K I was just wondering. I haven't used Excel in forever. But, I was sure there has to be better/faster way to fill in all those darn boxes. Thanks for sharing this tip.

    I am so glad I found you! I taught high school for nine years, took a break to stay home, then taught private Pre-K for two years, part time and now I’m a first time homeschool mom. I have curriculums on the way, and I sat today to plan but wanted different ideas and THIS is totally how my brain operates. I have never had to create my year at a glance since the schools did that for me, and I had taught for so long it was second nature. Getting ready to start the planning process using your tips! Thanks a ton!

    You are soooo amazing for sharing this gold with everyone for FREE!! This is made so well and really helps to lay everything out. We normally roll with the day and can't finish a chunk of weeks at the end because we did not plan. This helps so much!!! Even if we get off track it will be easier to see where we are and how far off.

    You can go into the settings of your sheet and set the title row to repeat automatically on each new page. It’s been a few versions since I did it so couldn’t tell you exactly where but it was in format.

    This has been so helpful! I spent 4+ hours last night recreating your spreadsheet with the info for my child’s curriculum. I usually have a loose idea of how many lessons I need to do per week for each subjects, but with all that life throws at us it’s easy to get lost along the way. I also like that w/ Excel I can just add rows or cells if we get behind. Thank you so much for this video!

    • @MeganPhillips
      @MeganPhillips  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If we got behind just a bit, I just crossed out and rewrote the page numbers... if we would ever get severely behind I would have to reprint my document... my brain wouldn't be able to handle it! :) It really is meant to be a guide so it can be used flexibly. I just like the know before the year starts approximately how long we need to get each subject done and approximately how much we need to complete each week.

      I should! I was actually just thinking about that the other day. I LOVE Excel, but everything I learned, I learned from watching over my husbands shoulder. Page 2 explains how she incorporates all of the different learning styles (she uses 8 of them like Body Smart, Word Smart, People Smart, Logic Smart, etc.) into the curriculum. She gives tons and tons of options so you can pick and choose what works best for your child. I hope that helps! If I didn't answer your question, please let me know and I"ll try again! :)

    Oh I love your organizing ideas - I come from an accountant background/business owner and excel spreadsheets are my thing; I work from home. BUT I don't come from a teacher background so I'm a little fearful and am considering HS this upcoming year due to some public school issues. I really like the idea of a 4 day week. My son will be a 3rd grader. Approx how many hours a day does this schedule look like for your older child? I have no clue how long lessons should be taking total each day.

    • @MeganPhillips
      @MeganPhillips  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks Tiana! My hubby loves Excel so I've learned a lot just from watching him! :) My son will be a 2nd grader (working at a mostly 3rd grade level) when we start back in July. I'm not sure we've ever spent more than 3 hours working on school. We run a pretty flexible schedule so I don't map out 20 minutes for math, 10 minutes for grammar, etc. We just do what needs to be done. If I feel like he's getting overwhelmed or spacing out, we take a break or change of scenery. You can totally do it! I would encourage you to just enjoy the summer with your son and then start slowly in the fall. Remember, it doesn't have to look like a classroom in your house, this gives you the ability to do what's best for him and if he's coming off of some PS issues, it might take a while to adjust. Sorry, I hope that doesn't sound preachy since I obviously don't know your situation! I'd be happy to help if you have other questions!

    • @tianamustin368
      @tianamustin368 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Megan Phillips oh my goodness thank you so much for your encouraging words. I CAN do this and I WILL make it happen!! My son deserves better than the PS experience he has had so far.

    I know this is an old video, but are you still using this method of planning? What happens when you need to bump things forward if you don't get them done? Is there an easy way to do that in Excel? I've started using Homeschool Planet but I still need a way to see my year at a glance.

    • @MeganPhillips
      @MeganPhillips  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sarah... the short answer to your question is... not really. I don't plan out all 36 weeks in advance now. I set goals for the year (actually fall semester and spring semester) and then write down what we do after we do it. I call it "planning from behind". Our schedule is just waaaaay more relaxed and flexible than when we used to plan this much in advance. IF you use this, you'll just have to manually shuffle things around if you need to. It's pretty easy to copy and paste or just cross things out and move them around.

    Do you account for short weeks? I noticed you did Math U See every week the whole lesson for a week but what if you only have a 2 or 3 day week? Also how do you account for if you get behind? I am using the crate system also with the idea that we can adjust as needed. I think having everything mapped out kind of defeats that benefit of the crate system

    • @MeganPhillips
      @MeganPhillips  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We school 4 days a week so I really try to plan errands and such for our off day. We haven't had any short weeks, so I haven't had to deal with it yet. :) If someone was sick or something came up, we'd either make up on our regular off day or probably on a Saturday to stay on track. I'm only using the crate system with my oldest. My preschooler is working at her own pace so I didn't want to split everything out and then have to reshuffle it all the time. In my opinion, having the crate system and mapping everything out go hand in hand. It's worked well so far for us, but it's only been 4 weeks and we haven't had any hiccups yet. :)

    Hi Megan! I know this is a couple of years old but I wanted to reach out to you and ask how you’re doing your Year at a Glance now that you’re using TGTB? Do you have a spreadsheet on it yet?

    • @MeganPhillips
      @MeganPhillips  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! That's a great question! For the first time EVER, I'm not pre-planning for Language Arts! With TGTB, it's just too hard to plan it out... but I'm OK with that. We are just taking it a day at time. I'm actually using it as more of a tracking document this year and filling in the lessons we finished at the end of the week.

    • @btwmicah_123
      @btwmicah_123 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Megan Phillips Thanks so much for getting back with me so fast!! Are you doing everything else the same? All I did with Language Arts (on your Year at a Glance form) is put 4 lessons per week spelling (5 min) Phonic Cards (5 min) and Poetry memorization. It’s more of a reminder for me so we don’t get too much off track!! Thanks again for all you do to make my planning so much easier! I incorporated the crate system last year and it was SO MUCH SIMPLER for organizing their daily stuff! Take care and God bless!! 😊

      I'm trying to plan out everything else about the same... it's really become more of a guide than anything. (It's amazing how much my planning has changed in only 3 years of homeschooling!)

    When you say your brain doesn't work like everyone else's... are you talking about different learning/thinking styles or saying that you have different cognitive abilities? I know I say all the time that my brain works differently than everyone else's because I'm on the autism spectrum. I also know there are other things like ADD/ADHD that makes someone cognitively different. So I was wondering if you, too, had one of those or something similar.

    How do you add the color where the grid lines still show/print?

      Leslie Keel Highlight/select the boxes that you want affected then up on tool bar you will see a little paint bucket with mini spilling click on that or the arrow next to it for a different color.

    Thank you for taking the time to do this video! Great help and your not the only one whose brain thinks like "that". I would love to have a spread sheet like this as well as a blank one to write my notes and such. Happy homeschooling God bless you
