The Aussies that I worked with, maybe 12 in number, were the least judgmental people that I have every known. They don't get fussed about a lot of the things that we Americans get torqued up about. The country is beautiful. I did not have a car while living in Melbourne, although I could have. Instead I had a Ducati, which I rode all over the country. Well, almost all of the country. Since returning to the U.S. in 2005, I have been back three times. I am planning another return trip in March before I get too old to travel internationally. I am 83.

As a first generation Australian senior, educated citizen I have had a number of debates on-line regarding whether we have a class system in Australia. We do NOT! Yes, we have people who are wealthy through to poor but that is NOT a class system as is in England. We judge and respect people on their character, not on their wealth. Australians believe in the value of 'mateship' and 'a fair go' which therefore these cannot apply in a class system as is in England. Also we have what is known as the 'tall poppy' syndrome where any one who has 'tickets on themselves'( i.e. thinks that they are superior to others) will soon be brought down/ have their 'heads' cut off. We are all (not the same but) EQUAL. I believe this attitude and value stems from early Australia - our convict past, the convicts' children, the dislike of the Rum Corps, the free settlers wanting a different life and the distain for the English power structure.
From my point of view, the 'she'll be right' attitude makes the shit things easier to deal with. My English cousins are constantly freaking out about everything (well the cost of living crisis isn't helping), whereas even during the worst periods I've been through I know that things could be a lot worse. I really wish now that they had moved to Australia back in the late 1970s as they probably would be better off now.
My wife doesn't want to go anywhere I thought. After asking her she said one place. Australia. Because of quilting embroidery and so on. We may have to see where her budding international market of quilting takes her and myself along for the ride. I'm up for the wilderness and wildlife.

@@ThatJohnstonLife I wonder if you still find this the case post COVID and with the current British economy. We found the cost of petrol in Britain expensive. As an Aussie who lived in Britain for a while my pros of Britain - cheap pharmaceutical drugs, closeness to Europe, History, Architecture, lovely English countryside around Cotswolds, Cornwall and rugby in Bath. Cons - black soot on the car which you needed to wash off regularly, rising damp, endless grey wet days, difficult to go surfing or swimming, terrible coffee, feeling sluggish and not wanting to exercise, too much soccer and darts on TV.

Life is too short so take advantage of the time you get and work-life balance is in the wrong order. We understand that more than most and finally 3. We are a country of boat people, refugees and possibly the most diverse population in the world BUT a people that believes in a fair go, a second chance plus being rich doesn't make you better or more important. I think that egalitarianism came from Gov. Lachlan Macquarie who pardoned and commuted convicts sentences so they could become pillars of our society (he was despised for this approach when he went home to England - a country that deeply values its 'class' system). While he haven't always got things right particularly with our indigenous people, we are always trying to do better. Why do you think our coat of arms has a Kangaroo and an Emu on it? The perception of wages changes with the exchange rate. Twenty-five years ago when the Australian dollar was thirty-seven British pence it looked like the opposite of what it is now. Australians thought the British were paid bucket loads.
Its true worries are exhausting , its so much easier to bypass them and focus on the things you can do something about like living your life to its full potential and enjoying it on the way . I once attended a lecture from one of Australia's top economists who revealed that a lot of unhappy people strived to own a brick triple fronted house in suburbia that they only spent time in to eat shit and sleep in and spend 25 yrs paying of the mortgage so they could then relax and go on bucket list holidays only to be to worn out by then to enjoy it . Although I admit that my goal was always to own my own home , I realised he was at least correct in that we were tieing our lives up without realising it ,from that time forward I determined to pay of the house as fast as I could and start having as many holidays and experiences asi could and after paying my house off 11yrs early could start doing more elaborate things . We compromised on things like buying new cars and things but the result was now that I'm old and an invalid I'm not sitting around wishing I should have done this or I wish I'd done that and now have so many fond memories to look back on without remorse , I feel that there are a whole lot of Aussie's just like me who have embraced our no worries she'll be right attitude and isn't that better than being a miserable bastard all your life . Good on ya mate keep on showing us Aussies what we take for granted .
i suppose its hard to worry about your cars extended warranty when your being dragged from your tent by croc. not a common occurance but it has happened.

QEII was our Queen to now king Charles III is now our king too. There is a reason why the union Jack is in the corner of our flag .. Love your videos
Lol, that’s a funny take on living here! One thing about the wildlife though is we just need a bit of common sense and local knowledge, not a can of bear spray(it doesn’t work on drop bears, it just makes them more vicious) like certain northern hemisphere continents… 😂

I've never heard anyone spin tall poppy syndrome as a positive thing. It's the reason our arts sector is always just a bit worse than it could potentially be if we all encouraged each other to thrive more
I agree, cutting humble people down who have talent is wrong. That type of thing should be nurtured and fostered. I have no time for cocky people who think they're better than others but actually aren't. Always stay humble
Pre covid capsicums were never more than $6 kg and usually around $2.00 - $4.00 kg This has been the longest time and most expensive I've ever seen them. This is also the same for many other produce... Many years ago cabbages went up to $9.00 each...then the next season there was so many that one huge cabbage cost 9 cents each (yes, that's nine cents each).
Yeah and in like i want to say 07 ish after a big cyclone etc all the bananas got fucked and 1 banana was like 5 bucks or something insane where the only kids with a banana in their lunchbox during that time were the super rich kids and everyone else has to have a mandarin instead.

$1 equals 1.54 Australian Dollar
It’s all about the Dollar!
You finally get it quality over quantity
If only others got it too
Wow! The more I watch your family videos, the more I want to leave 🇨🇦 and joIn 🇦🇺
Come do it!!
Sometimes it helps if someone can help us see the wood for the trees
i suppose its hard to worry about your cars extended warranty when your being dragged from your tent by croc. not a common occurance but it has happened.
Don't camp less than 4m from the water then
@@ThatJohnstonLife 4m? your game, i wouldnt be on the ground within 30m. some of those things would still have their tails in the water at 4m.
Australian are simple and also complicated, also post code matters mostly in Sydney and Melbourne. You have the beaches people or the beach haters. Coffee people and tea people.
Hello. I'm a young brit looking to make the move in the new year.
I want to study whilst working as much as possible.
Do you have any tips for good careers to build over there?
Love the comments! I just got pulled for a visa myself so hopefully after a short wait, I'll be getting settled in too! Looking into Perth or Brisbane but the entire country is beautiful and I would be thrilled to be anywhere there. Just hoping being an expat isn't too hard since I'm moving away from everyone I know!
BBQ's this summer 😅 We will have to have them inside the house....Mate I like the way you call it as you see it. I wish more migrants had your attitude. Exactly, we have no problem telling someone to get f**ked....😅😅
To prove a point..."Get F^&Ked mate. 😀😁. I tell my international students everyone is your mate, until you prove yourself a c##t, Then we will straight out call you one, you can tell we are pissed off if we heavily pronounce the last letter of our insult, the rest of the time, just a laugh
I now love telling people that!!
You called it capsicum!
Not wrong mate
Thanks 😊
You should be on the Aussie Tourism payroll. Good job MATE!!!
Thanks bud, still waiting for my invite
Hi from Melbourne
Don’t worry, mate. We can still bbq ya jest need a brolly
🤣🤣 it looks like your slowly but surely becoming Aussie are we. By the way sorry about the soccer (football) situation on TV but they do play the local league soccer on TV don't they?.
Love it
Thanks Shaun
Has he never been to Scotland? BTW there isn't just one Australian dialect. There are over 60 nationalities living here, all of whom speak with a blended accent. Nothing surprises me more when an person of obviously Chinese decent answers with a broad Australian accent!
I see the Aussie cursing is catching you lol!!! In arrival back to the UK we really had to watch it!! Be aware though your little ones wil follow suit lol!!!! 🤣
It's sometimes easier to say it how it is Kris
@@ThatJohnstonLife 😬😂😂😂
Fuck it have a whinge the reality is we all do it. I think you put that rather well mate good job. I hope the new bub is fine and you are all coping with it .
She's great Grahame. I like to whinge in private looking at myself in the mirror in a dark room so no one can see me
@@ThatJohnstonLife I do it to my wife even though she tells me to STFU. I mean whats the good of it if you don't share hahahaha
Ross, how many of those deadly assie animals have you come across in your two years here?
Just not the crocs in the wild, and I can cope with that Grant
@@ThatJohnstonLife Have you actually seen {live} any of those deadly Australian animals that are mentioned on you tube.
You've obviously lived an enjoyed the Aussie lifestyle long enough to give such accurate bang on description of what it is like here in Australia. But one thing I noticed u mention about celebrating birthdays of another countries monarch.!! Well technically we are a part of that same monarchies realm and are part of the commonwealth. QEII was our Queen to now king Charles III is now our king too. There is a reason why the union Jack is in the corner of our flag ..
Love your videos
Tall Poppy Syndrome. So true...
Lol, that’s a funny take on living here! One thing about the wildlife though is we just need a bit of common sense and local knowledge, not a can of bear spray(it doesn’t work on drop bears, it just makes them more vicious) like certain northern hemisphere continents… 😂
You should do advertising for the Australian tourism industry
Brilliant video mate from one Pom to another shut up before the whole world ends up here... Only joking 🤣🇦🇺
You can tell who’s new here from Pomgolia at a party , they’re the ones drinking Fosters 😝cheers🍻
Fosters isn't a thing
Exactly what I told him about the creatures.
Mate Australia might be good for you , but you are definitely good for Australia.
Thanks Macman, appreciate the comment
I've never heard anyone spin tall poppy syndrome as a positive thing. It's the reason our arts sector is always just a bit worse than it could potentially be if we all encouraged each other to thrive more
I agree, cutting humble people down who have talent is wrong. That type of thing should be nurtured and fostered. I have no time for cocky people who think they're better than others but actually aren't. Always stay humble
ha ha, great video.
Cheers Scott
Pre covid capsicums were never more than $6 kg and usually around $2.00 - $4.00 kg
This has been the longest time and most expensive I've ever seen them.
This is also the same for many other produce...
Many years ago cabbages went up to $9.00 each...then the next season there was so many that one huge cabbage cost 9 cents each (yes, that's nine cents each).
I don't think I've ever liked cabbage enough to pay $9 Steven
@@ThatJohnstonLife
Lol, no one did.
Yeah and in like i want to say 07 ish after a big cyclone etc all the bananas got fucked and 1 banana was like 5 bucks or something insane where the only kids with a banana in their lunchbox during that time were the super rich kids and everyone else has to have a mandarin instead.
Maaate. Worrying only makes you suffer twice. No sense in it until you need to.
Great way to put it Brenden
