To this day one of my favorite Takeover cards was from Takeover: New York in 2019. War Raiders vs Ricochet and Aleister Black is still one of my favorite NXT matches.
A couple of the main roster Wargames matches have come close, but I agree: there's no topping those 5 absolute battles we got from 2017 through 2021 in NXT.
I was at that first NXT wargames here in Houston man It was insane to see it brought back as a kid growing up watching it on the prime in the NWA/WCW it brought back great memories
The Black and Gold era of NXT will always have a special place in my heart. They were regularly showing up the main roster. Takeovers became must-see television where the question wasn't if it was going to be good or not - it was how great was it going to be? Looking back I'm glad they made the transition to 2.0 so that this era has a bookend and we can now look back with fondness at something special that was loved and enjoyed by so many. But, don't sleep on NXT in 2023-24 because while there is a different vibe, it's still got a lot of great things going for it.

Rhea Ripley finally defeating Shayna Baszler and the whole locker room coming out to hoist her up was for me the single best and most cathartic moment in NXT that I can remember. În retrospect that was actually the first real crowning of a downright superstar.
One thing often overlooked was that the hard camera side was on the opposite side of what we are use to when it was filmed at Full Sail University. With the ramp being on the right side it gave the show a different look.
Honestly I think 2017-2020 era of NXT is really overrated. I know people love it, but that's when I pretty much tuned out of it. There was some good that was in it, but i think people really only look at that time with rose tinted glasses
Discovering Adam Cole is what drew me to Black & Gold NXT when I was getting back into wrestling in 2017. I was absolutely blown away by the storytelling, the edge and the overall talent on display in conjunction to just how bland Raw and Smackdown were at the time. It was also what made me branch out more as a fan and made me seek out more from NJPW & ROH. I still go back and revisit 2013-2019 NXT from time to time.
For me Andrade v Gargano at NXT Takeover Philadelphia is probably my favourite match from NXT. The black and gold had such a wealth of talent. Was such a shame to see people called up to the main roster only to see them booked all wrong and fade into obscurity
Unpopular opinion but I honestly preferred when NXTs title was more basic before, the big strap, simple plain gold NXT. I know NXT has evolved far from that time but still, i miss the simplicity overall. Also I wish they took more, idk it’s risk but like when Owen’s came out to Cena’s open challenge then went on to beat Cena(not for the belt) which nobody expected. Same with Paige coming out and beating AJ Lee.
I appreciate this video more than anything. I felt like i was the biggest believer in NXT and it showed that Triple H was excellent in being in charge of anything. I probably would have added the arrival of Seth Rollins & Neville (Pac) somewhere in the list.
We cannot talk about Black and Gold Era without mentioning about Asuka. She is one of the guys who define the Black and Gold Era. ❤❤💔 What about Andrade and Aleister Black. They were so freakin good with time they spent in NXT.
i feel like the reason NXT Black & Gold was better than the main roster was because the less weekly hours, titles and everybody felt important the main roster could have this if you bin the brand split, the pointless titles and maybe and maybe an hour or two of the main show.

nxt got me back into wrestling.....couldn't stand the main stuff. actually went to takeover brooklyn. then they changed the whole thing. Then I saw Aew and had the same feeling. The women in aew need a massive upgrade. that's what nxt had that aew has to work on
NXT arena Takeover era(2015-20) was untouchable. The best stuff WWE produced during that time. AEW did best it, no question, but it showed a real alternative could not only survive but thrive.

I say this as someone who loves AEW, but NXT Halloween Havoc was the absolute perfect show to be the one time NXT held the lead in the Wednesday Night War!
Backlash 2017 was a good show, but it was topped by TakeOver Chicago with style. On a side note, TakeOver R: Evolution's Main Event and Zayn's NXT Championship are still among the best moments in NXT History. The unironically beloved heroic journey and victory, combined with the sheer adulation of the crowd created an instant classic that will stand the test of time.
Man, those were some good times! Took the family to an NXT show at the Seattle Paramount theater, I think that's where it was, and holy crap talk about a show. That was when the street profits were doing their tour letting everybody know that they are getting ready to head up to SmackDown or raw.
Because NXT Black and Gold was mostly an online sensation which is why so many flopped in the main roster and Vince had flops (Tye Dellinger, Aliester Black) for every success (Alexa Bliss). NXT is more successful than ever since they made the NXT 2.0 changes and grew from there.
It was so good it was better than Raw and Smackdown at that time. It was no developmental territory unless we understand it as the best talent being hired and adapted there for the main roster plus new stars being created in the Performance Center. Now it is developmental, but back then it was pro wrestling at its finest.
This us gonna piss people off, but i think NXT from 2017-2020 is very overrated. People may hate NXT from 2021 to now, but it does a way better job of building stars and establishing characters. Back then, most people were just work rate guys and didn't have much character, other than im happy to be here or im a good wrestler. By the time AEW Dynamite started going head to head with NXT, Vince had taken control of NXT himself and he ruined it. And it seemed like he ruined it on purpose to spite HHH because fans and wrestling journalists were begging for Vince to retire and let HHH run things. If HHH was still running NXT, we would've never got that stupid NXT 2.0 garbage. It would've stayed Black & Gold. And I bet they wouldn't have lost to Dynamite so many times. Vince really was so out of touch for years before he retired.

They had some good characters back then, guys like Velveteen Dream and LA Knight for example, Karrion Kross was a beast back then, but other than them, most of them wouldn't have clicked on the main roster. Simple characters can work, but some of the black and gold characters just weren't gonna cut it on the main roster. Just being called a great wrestler who has great matches weren't gonna achieve long term success in an industry where characters, charisma, mic work, and star appeal matters.

I used to look forward to Takeover tag openers more than most of the main roster matches on PPV / PLE. There was a long streak of all-action bangers that were just perfect.

I used to look forward to Takeover tag openers more than most of the main roster matches on PPV / PLE. There was a long streak of all-action bangers that were just perfect.

NXT Black and Gold never made a profit and was a huge waste of expenses until Nick Khan finally convinced Vince to deal with it.
it also never had the viewership that Raw and SD got and was an terminally online sensation that needed to leech off the main roster PPVs to fill out their shows.
