This song really moved me, being an American of partial Korean descent. One of my great-grandmothers was orphaned at 11 during the Japanese annexation of Korea. Having lost her family, and at risk of being sold into sexual slavery, she boarded a ship to Hawaii with the help of some missionaries. I may not have any connections with Ireland, but somehow I could imagine my great-grandmother singing almost all the lyrics to this song, with a few minor changes, mostly in place names.
@user-xx What was special about the Orphan Girls was that these girls lost their families, like your great grandmother did, and under the control of an invading, imperialist force, again like your great grandmother. The imperialist force, Britain, needed women, not as sexual slaves, but as domestic servants then respectable wives for colonists in the developing Australian colonies. They couldn't persuade enough English/Scot/Welsh lasses to go so they went to the workhouses of Ireland, the girls there only too pleased to go. God bless our great grandmothers.

My mom suffered throughout life questioning the action's of her father who escaped justice; and presumably died somewhere, at sometime. I like this song and find myself listening to it, frequently. Mom died nearly thirty years ago and I always hoped she found peace in death and an end to the torment she carried in life. Funny that I always imagined her and my grandmother dressed and standing in a serene place similar to this video. It's as if some greater force is acknowledging that, and telling me they are safe, I truly hope so...

My great grandmother Grace Gallagher and her brother John from County Cork were orphaned in An Gorta More, The Great Famine. All we know is that they made their way to the US, lived in New York city, Pittsburgh, Groton, CT, and Finally laid to rest in Canton Illinois. We treasure a photo of her taken about 1915.

Some years ago, I went looking, to find that her remains were, still are, now beneath a nearby Athletics Track at which I regularly competed over summers. Had I then known

The ancestors of my father, Dan Lavelle, came from the Louisburgh (Old Head) area of Mayo in the early days of the famine. His great-grandfathers were the immigrants, first to Scranton PA and then, Butte MT. Back in the 70s I found myself in Sydney, Australia where I lived for several years. This song really speaks to me and who wouldn't love the music of UCD? Beautiful!!!

Our songs are our past not written words because we were to be dumb and submissive to the fecking crown. Our songs we will sing long past the demise of British royalty. Saoirse
The blue eyed woman owns a stare that could boil a cup of coffee were she to peer into it a stretch too long. I dare not look directly at her for fear of blindness, even if all that such entails is endless failure to find beauty in those aspects of the world that are not, and do not directly encapsulate her.
She's so incredibly gorgeous. Those eyes seem to stare right through you. We don't see her in more recent videos as she's undoubtedly graduated and moved on. And we'll probably never see her again. What a shame.
A beautiful Aryan woman with amazing blue eyes like the Atlantic ocean that kisses our shores. She comes from the island called Eire (pronounced Ayra) which in Gaelic means Ireland (Ayerland). Of course we also have beautiful red haired ladies with stunning green emerald eyes who will pass the time of day with all they meet. Lucky us lol
This is simply breathtakingly beautiful and hauntingly heartbreaking. I myself flew to Australia nearly 10 years ago and will never leave, because Australia has provided me with a better life and more opportunities. But I came here on my own volition. "..the crown is sending girls to sea.." - imagine that predicament. We can hear she really wants to go, but she doesn't know what's waiting for her when she gets there.. She's only 16. It's (nearly..) only the Irish who are able to create such astounding beauty, not only for the ears, but the heart, soul and eyes! Although it's sort of comforting knowing that quite a few of them ended up having a good life in Australia, the tone of this song says otherwise.. Once again, a tearful well done to the Irish for yet another piece of soul balm to gently caress my battered self, and albeit for only 5 minutes and 56 seconds, take all my problems away..

@@amun-ra2509 I don't know about that. The Swiss, Canadians, English, and Spanish have had things pretty easy with all things considered. Here's what I mean: The Swiss - Got to avoid both world wars. The last "conflict" they had was over 150 years ago. The English - Well, we read and write in their language so what does THAT tell you! They were able to push back every attempted invasion by themselves, militarily speaking. Except for the Vikings, but that didn't last very long. The Spanish - They got to avoid both world wars too. Plus anytime they were invaded, even if it took a long time, they succeeded with indomitable valor. Also, their people succeeded in inhabiting the vast majority of the New World. The Canadians - .... Do I even need to explain? lol
Really beautiful. Gorgeous song and video. I live just a 2 minute walk from a Workhouse in Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan so many sad stories but unfortunately it is part of our history. Brendan has captured the Workhouse story so well - I just love the lyrics of this song.
Let's not forget that these workhouses were still active until the mid 1990s,run by nuns, protected by government, and still too this day most of the stolen babies have no birth certificates and no family history of medical needs,my wife was born in these places and the cover up of information of drug trials carried out by UCC and English pharmaceutical companies right up until the 1980s, the dead baby's dumped into cesspits,,,, Ireland's shame
my goodness, the lady singing, very beautiful (as they are all) and she sings with feeling, it even looked like her eyes were about to tear up....i could rest peacefully to her singing
Janet, you may find that many people's ancestors were in the same boat. My family history had to face the Guillotine or Exile during the French Revolution. And tunes like this are reminders of those dark past's.
So many Irish were forcibly transported to Australia and New Zealand, by the British, and were treated as no more than slaves. Some found a better life, it's true, but they were forever exiled from their homeland by British brutality. Most blame the famines for the forced exodus, but truth be told, Ireland grew and exported enough food to feed the Irish population many times over. The British exported the food, despite the calls from the rest of the world, away from Ireland and to the other possessions of the British Empire. The million or so Irish who perished during the famine were murdered, pure and simple. My ancestry is mostly British, Scottish, and Irish. Take the good with the bad I guess.
@@justincase8854 "the times and the age" seems a poor excuse for murder, torture, imprisonment, famine, trafficking .... Do these things not go on now?
@@diarmuidbreatnach5482 A lot of evil was done for the expansion of empires, as far back in time as records were kept, I know these records were written by the victors but they are a record, from the Egyptians, Persians, Greeks and Romans. Absolutely these things go on today, look at West Papua New Guinea being under the control of the Indonesian Government by force, the atrocities that are being done to the indigenous people are disgusting, the Boko Haram taking nearly 300 young girls into slavery back in 2014, Myanmar at the moment, Taiwan wanting to be a free entity away from China but look how China dealt with that just a few months ago and is still happening now , where is the public outcry for the innocents caught up in this modern day "murder, torture, imprisonment, famine, trafficking"? We cannot live in the past, be grateful for what we have now. I'm not sure which part of the world you inhabit at the moment but hopefully it's not where the government tell you what to do or think, like North Korea and China to name a few. I live in Australia and have many lineages, Irish, Scottish, English, Aboriginal and Nordic and over half of my European heritage were brought over in chains, nearly all my Irish were convicts, for small offenses, I don't hold anyone to account for me or how I got to be here, the only person I hold to any account is myself, to be a good person and not live in the past, especially something that happened 6 to 7 generations ago. Be happy and be proud of your heritage, enjoy life Diarmuid :)
@@justincase8854 We may not live in the past but we are formed by it in the present just as the present forms the future and so hopefully we learn from the past. I am mostly happy and proud of what there is to be proud of while striving to change what I can for the better. Governments and ruling elites everywhere tell us what and how to think (and perhaps more, what NOT to think), some more bluntly and crudely than others and we negotiate our own thinking through those weirs, locks and rapids but we are not unaffected by them.
@@diarmuidbreatnach5482 That is absolutely true, we are formed by the past and it is everyone's duty to do everything possible not to repeat it. I believe in most countries we are achieving that, more equality for those who were deemed less than those in power, a quote comes to mind "accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference" . It is my opinion that holding resentment for things done in the past stops you from moving forward, especially 200 to 300 years ago when human life meant nothing to those in rule. Governments and those who rule are corruptible, it is human nature, once in power they do anything possible to stay there, through unjust laws and even imprisoning those who they see as a threat, as in Myanmar and West Papua New Guinea at the moment, these modern day injustices affects people, as it should because it reminds us of what has been done in the past, human life is worth much more now. It is up to the individual as to what degree it affects them, I ask myself " is there anything I can do to change this" if there is nothing I can do through direct action then I accept what is happening and hope our free world leaders and the UN do everything they can to help the innocent. Hope is good, not resentment :)

This song should be released as an international single. The song and video is beyond magnificent. The homeless in Ireland could benefit from sales if UCD Choral Scholars and composer Brendan Graham agreed. Just an idea.
There was an Orphan Girl mine in Butte, Montana which employed Irish miners, and now I kinda get the back story. There's now an Orphan Girl distillery.
This song breaks my heart. I was born in the U.K. many many years ago. I am proud and ashamed at the same time. The way we treated our own people over the centuries is sickening. I feel it whenever I read Dickens as well. I picture Scrooge as the English and tiny tim as the Irish. The fact that I am also Catholic makes it all the worse. The English seem to forget that until the mid 1500’s they were also Catholic. Its all rather confusing since my ancestors are both English and Irish with some Welsh and Scottish thrown in for good measure.
I have no idea of my ancestors besides my grandad who was born in 62. 1862 that is. And yes Im old. But not as old you think... But the brtitish empire destroying Ire. Sometimes invokes my Ire...
What is in the past is in the past. Don't feel guilty about your ancestors action. To move forward, we have to learn from history, to hopefully not make the same mistakes as a society and individuals😊

If I’m not mistaken, you get views of the Westport House, Old Head Beach, Doolough Valley, and Louiseburgh. Those are some of the most beautiful places around there. Okay, I’ve never been to (nor have I seen) any of those places. The locations are given at the very end of the video’s credits.
It is impossible to write what I feel. I honestly don't know the desperation of sending my precious daughter away, but this powerful song gives the insight to break my heart. A beautiful and melodic song about a courage and leap of faith few know. Such a profound song and video. My heart goes out to those brave and innocent girls, proud they are clean for an acceptance without will. The most moving musical video I've ever seen. Immense thanks to the Choral Scholars of University College Dublin. This video/song will remain a part of me with the fervor which haunts me.
Brought me to tears, the woke among us should reflect on what was true sacrifice. 4000 woung women and girls were shipped off to Australia during the Irish Hunger in search of a better life(not starving to death). No romance novels were written about the outcome.
Wonderful! Spent a good while listening to the other songs, so to suddently find this was a timely and thoroughly pleasant surprise. Wishing you all in Ireland the very best, cincerely from Sweden.
The first orphans girls arrived from Ireland to Australia aboard the Lady Kennaway on September 11th, 1848. Most of the girls were from counties Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Donegal, and many were Gaelic speakers. A total six ships, the Lady Kennaway, Pemberton, Diadem, New Liverpool, Derwent and Eliza Caroline, sailed across the world with 4,000 Irish Famine orphan girls, with 1,700 of them arriving in Melbourne
This is the most beautiful sound I've ever heard. Somehow, I know the tune and the voice, though I've never heard it before. 50 year old American in tears... If the good Lord deems me fit, this I hope to hear at the gates to heaven.
Please think about this: It applies to each and every one of us. One day we'll all be orphans Ready to sail on to another life And praying that the Inspector finds us fit And wishing that we'll find a better life Because our time in this one is up. So let's work, learn and be better every day So when the moment comes As it will come, mark my words We can go without fear and full of hope To the next life. We will probably not be 16 when that happens But it will Be sure of that. God bless you all Love and light From Mexico

@Mega17 Andrea "My girlfriend is an orphan gi.." It's still to be proven one way or t'other but my Great Grandmother, Catherine from Tipp, met and married my Great Grandfather, Dan from Kildare, in Queensland, Australia. Was she an Orphan Girl ? The ancestors of my father, Dan Lavelle, came from the Louisburgh (Old Head) area of Mayo in the early days of the famine. His great-grandfathers were the immigrants, first to Scranton PA and then, Butte MT. Back in the 70s I found myself in Sydney, Australia where I lived for several years. This song really speaks to me and who wouldn't love the music of UCD? Beautiful!!!
I am hooked to this channel. Your music is something out of this world. Feels more angelic than earthly😊.

Made me homesick for Ireland, and I've never even been there!
Well get on that plane. Come visit!!
I know that feeling well. It's a bit sad but also beautiful, isn't it?
The lead singers voice is so delicately beautiful 😭 and the harmony is breathtaking 🥺
The blue eyed woman owns a stare that could boil a cup of coffee were she to peer into it a stretch too long. I dare not look directly at her for fear of blindness, even if all that such entails is endless failure to find beauty in those aspects of the world that are not, and do not directly encapsulate her.
Andrew Feazelle Perhaps if you stop it you won't go blind
She's so incredibly gorgeous. Those eyes seem to stare right through you. We don't see her in more recent videos as she's undoubtedly graduated and moved on. And we'll probably never see her again. What a shame.
A beautiful Aryan woman with amazing blue eyes like the Atlantic ocean that kisses our shores. She comes from the island called Eire (pronounced Ayra) which in Gaelic means Ireland (Ayerland). Of course we also have beautiful red haired ladies with stunning green emerald eyes who will pass the time of day with all they meet. Lucky us lol
She was first in her class in Business. And you can see her again in "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair."
Which one of them are you talking about???
It would have been a very hard life even if it was eventually a good life. They would have worked hard.

@@amun-ra2509 I don't know about that. The Swiss, Canadians, English, and Spanish have had things pretty easy with all things considered. Here's what I mean:
The Swiss - Got to avoid both world wars.

Whatever the circumstances the people that came to Australia were here because of the times of the age, we make our home our home

I am an orphan girl,
In Westport I was found,
The workhouse is my world,
Since the praties took us down,
What time in life is left to me,
If I don’t leave Westport town,
But the crown is sending girls to sea, for far Australia bound.
Chorus
Sail, sail, sail me away,
Sail to Australia;
Sail, sail, sail me I pray,
Sail me away, to Australia.
They say Australia’s fine,
They say Australia’s fair,
Australia’s on my mind
And the fields of praties there
I pray when this inspection’s done, that they’ll say me fit to sail,
For they don’t just send out anyone, oh Lord, don’t see me fail.
I am scarcely turned sixteen,
But I’m ready now to go
I’m decent and I’m clean,
Fit for any man to know.
And I will be some good man’s wife,
If there I’ll settle down
And find myself a better life,
If I get to Sydney town.
Last Chorus
Sail me away, sail me I pray
Sail me away to Australia.
I am an orphan girl, oh I am an orphan girl

Please think about this:
It applies to each and every one of us.
One day we'll all be orphans
Ready to sail on to another life
And praying that the Inspector finds us fit
And wishing that we'll find a better life
Because our time in this one is up.
So let's work, learn and be better every day
So when the moment comes
As it will come, mark my words
We can go without fear and full of hope
To the next life.
We will probably not be 16
when that happens
But it will
Be sure of that.
God bless you all
Love and light
From Mexico
Please share your thoughts on this... I think we agree.

That's exactly how Australia was populated, and how Ireland and Scotland provided for the crown.
Some of us are of free settler stock. I love both places with equal passion, despite being refused entry to Dublin on one occasion. Spent the night in a cell at Garda Station next Dublin airport. Gave me a little perspective on what its like when the State doesn't like you.
