I’ve had this done from a hockey injury and it was quite an experience. Great job to this volunteer

Unfortunately, this victim is in the USA. In any other country this would be treated, with or without a contact lens, with diphoterine. Diphoterine is an amphoteric ligand that is useful in all chemical eye injuries other than hydrofluoric acid. In eye injuries from concentrated caustic (I'm a doctor working across two alumina refineries) the pH will return to normal after 500-1000ml. The patient may still go on to develop sloughing of the superficial cornea but the anterior chamber is always preserved.

The US does a lot of medicine weird and it’s mostly due to money

Non-sterile procedure so sterile gloves aren't required. Regular gloves are far from sterile. Stop whining.

Still though, BSI is always good. I agree it isn't the end of the world but it would still be nice to see to isolate the care provider from the patient.

@@drozycoder2007 Non-patients can still have transmissible illnesses though. I see where you are coming from but it is always better to take too much precaution than not enough. The point of non-sterile gloves is not to make the procedure sterile, and a non-sterile procedure does not necessarily mean personal protective equipment is not required. The gloves are to keep bodily fluid from getting on you and reduce the likelihood of exposure to communicable diseases.

Empire outdoors shut up troll. Better to have positive control of it and not have it slip, no? Wash your hands thoroughly before, dry off, and go.

Just as an FYI, gloves have been shown to be less hygienic in studies at restaurants because people don't wash their hands with gloves on. They can go from handling meat to vegetables without realising because they have the gloves on, if they didn't have them on they would wash their hands.
Just to show that gloves don't show 100% hygiene, if he had gloves on you wouldn't be asking if he'd handled other patients with them before. And don't think that dodgy kebab shop down the street is practicing good hygiene because they have gloves on.
