Buster Olney is right. $500M+ or $600M+ or whatever it is, Ohtani should be treated to meet his marketability, since his power is not limited to the Americas region. In the early stage of this tournament, Shohei inspired players and viewers across the Asia Pacific region. i.e., Japan, Korea, China, and Australia. The Czech Republic, where baseball is still a minor sport, was in the same pool. Team Japan won by a wide margin in the end, but Ohtani tweeted the word "RESPECT" to the Czech team for their love of baseball and the Czech responded with the word "Honor". The wonderful part is that Ohtani is acting for others with his genuine love for baseball. Fans sense it if the motive is for money. But ironically, Shohei's "I love baseball!" mindset will push up his market power even more.
This marks the beginning of a Golden Era for the WBC. USA definitely has a massive chip to carry in the next one, and the top baseball nations are all out for the blood that this year's WBC has just offered a taste of!
Whatever the Japanese lack in physical ability they make up for it with beautiful team baseball. I know Ohtani is a freak of nature but this whole team deserves recognition. One thing broadcasters keep skipping - ok, Ohtani is an elite athlete who gets to 1st in 4.16 seconds (I can't tie my shoes in 4.16 seconds) but did we not see him run back and forth between the dugout and the bullpen at least twice, trying to warm up to pitch the 9th *and be on hand to hit in the bottom of the 8th? At one point he gets literally 3 warmup pitches and then has to get back to the on deck circle. ?Who Does That? And then go out and make the biggest moment of the WBC and probably of his career to strike out the 2nd best player in the world? A guy who, by the way, in over 6400 ABs has struck out with a swing and miss a total of 24 times. There. Is. No. Equal. There is no valid argument. Look what a human being can be. Incredible.
The whole event was about seeing guys who would never get the chance to play with everything on the line come in and be clutch on the international stage. Whether that is Nootbar or long time Nippon stars or the Pirates bullpen ace or guys stuck behind the lines in a Cuban communist oligarchy all had the chance to be seen and showcased. I would like to see Ohtani and Trout advance to the playoffs with the Angels next. I want to see the two of them wear championship rings, if possible. Yeah, I know that's hard to do even with their plot armor...😢
I definitely want to see this WBC put a fire under both of them to lead this team to a playoff berth. Ohtani can go wherever he wants. I want them to get there for Trout because if Shohei leaves he can go win a ring somewhere else.
Team USA lost the game because they do not know how to bunt! Throughout the tournament they showed zero ability to bunt, and it hurt them in the last inning against Japan. Mookie Betts did not know how to bunt in a critical situation and ended up hitting into a double play. This is very important, and the American media is silent about it.
@@baatar Agree because throughout the history of the MLB it been mostly about strikeouts and home runs and not about all the other things that you can do in a game
Baseball joins Soccer in having a real international world cup. And the fans are the winners. Say what you think about American football and basketball being the most popular sports in the US, Baseball and Soccer are the best in the world.
I agree this was entertaining without the rules. But gotta acknowledge these guys didn’t take a year on the mound and hours to get set in the box. The shift wasn’t as prevalent and guys hit to contact. The game wasn’t slowed down as much as the mlb had been before the rule changes because these guys played the right way
8:00 In Japanese baseball, few phrases are more overused than "Justo Meeto" (which is an abbreviation for "just meet the ball", though it is most often used by announcers, to indicate that somebody made good contact). In the US, little leaguers are often told this, but by the time they reach high school, almost every American kid is swinging for the fence on every pitch. In Japan, hitting coaches are just as likely to tell players this at the top Pro level. Stop trying to smash the ball. Just make contact. THAT is the difference between the two varieties of baseball. We have seen which one works best.
I do agree with Mendoza, to a certain degree, about contact being a big reason why Japan won the WBC but I wouldn't consider it the most important. Japan had ALL of their best pitchers, they even had their best pinch runner participate. The US only had some of their best hitters, and NONE of their best pitchers. What did it come down to? Japan's BEST PITCHER versus USA's best hitter. What happened at the end of the Mexico game? Japan's pitcher was able to close out his final inning while Mexico's relief ended up losing them the game. Pitching was the main reason Japan was able to win the WBC undefeated, while their contact hitting was definitely second to that. If the US had their best pitchers I don't know if they beat Japan because Shohei, Nootbar, and Yoshida were THAT good, but they would've definitely blew out the other teams they went against.
@@rasiel957 I wouldn't exactly call Alonso, Anderson, McNeil, nor Witt Jr some of the country's best position players but I see where you're coming from; USA was loaded in terms of their lineup.
The irony of all this is baseball was born in usa. Today other countries are more passionate, dedicated and the love for country is above for the love for money and franchise .
You guys need to understand this. Ohtani doesn't play for money. He makes enough outside of baseball, money doesn't influence his decisions. You should look up how much he spent each month while he was playing in Japan.
Would have been nice to have certainly, but let's be honest, the pitching did a fine job last night. For all the talk about us not having our aces, it was the offense that let us down in the final.
Was it a good tournament? Judging from the results and highlights, absolutely. But I couldn't bring myself to get excited for a Team USA that did not include Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Clayton Kershaw, Gerrit Cole ... To put it in perspective, the entire Team USA staff had a combined 11 All-Star game appeareances. The four I mention as missing ... 31 All-Star games, nie Cy Youngs and a pair of MVPs. The offense was so good (despite Mike Trout striking out nearly ever other at bat) that the team was able to reach the final, but you have to wonder what even one true ACE pitcher would have done.
If our best pitchers played in the WBC, it's game over, USA wins. The pitchers USA had were not great and other teams had their best pitchers. There's no excuse for MLB pitchers to not participate if Ohtani is out there giving his all. Dude is on his final year of current contract and inline for biggest contract ever. Japan sees it as an honor to play for the team.
@@RobotRegJapan had a pitcher pitching in the finals that can’t even legally drink in the US, there should be no excuses on the pitching, offense just didn’t pull through
@@dillonmackay683 I agree, Japan actually didn’t have all their best either for the reasons of their original teams. its kinda better to not blame on their own pitchers as you have a star studded line up of MVPs and All star players..pitched silly by 20 year olds japanese pitchers…it will only sound like embarrassing excuses. Arrogance can be your worst enemy..
Deberían hacer que todos contra todos sé den y como van eliminado van clasificando hasta que dos equipos se enfrenten para la Gran final así sería mejor y más nervios cada partido así sería mejor
Just read the Sports Illustrated article and I agree. Baseball is now Japan's pastime. They won because they wanted it more and literally 99% of Japan was watching the tournament. You can't get that in the US in any sport. Their top players scrambled to join the team while ours just stayed home. 14 American Cy Young winners last year and we couldn't get one? Embarrassing.
I don't think it was 99% of the country, but there was a massive audience in Japan. Dan Patrick made the comparison with the World Series of '22: The World Series had an average of 12 million people watching. Japan vs Italy in the WBC quarterfinals had 46 million people watching in Japan

It’s confusing for foreigners to understand basically it’s changing from sport to sport ( it can be 1or 2 or 4 or 5 national teams representing these two main British isles) and what their history / politics is in this green and pleasant land is … In this case it Might be because in some team sports (like rugby/cricket/field hockey) Ireland (unlike as in soccer with its two national Irish teams) has a “joint “ team representing the whole island with players from both Northern Ireland (the 4th nation off the uk but not part off gb) and the republic off Ireland 🇮🇪 …… leaving the other 3 home nations off England/Scotland and Wales either having their own teams ( soccer always outside the odd Olympics tournament-rugby most off the time - field hockey half the time) or having a joint great British team …… but honestly have no idea in baseball …… but it won’t be the only time gb is wrongly used as in the Olympics we are called team gb 🇬🇧 which is just because it a catchy name because it’s really an FULL United Kingdom’s team …… as anyone from Northern Ireland who is at the Olympics will be in team gb 🇬🇧 if not representing Ireland 🇮🇪 .
What are you talking about? Baseball is played everywhere in the Caribbean and Central and South America. Baseball isn't all American. Hockey is a Canadian sport. Even European and Russian teams have proven to be great at the sport. America acknowledges how great players from Japan and Latin American countries are that they sign them to play in the major league in the States. America doesn't live in its own bubble.
De que hablas? El fútbol casi siempre lo puede ganar siempre o casi siempre lo gana lo mismo el béisbol lo puede ganar japón hoy mañana México después república Checa después Italia hasta el mas bajo lo pueden ganar
If America actually sent their best players…but too many players/organizations care more about $$$ and their own self interest than the passion for the game. Same goes for USA Basketball
The US has the blame for the low interest in the sport; it would be like Argentina or Brazil saying, "No, I don't want to host the World Cup," and that's a true one-sided deal for the corrupt FIFA. The future of baseball is outside the US; the NBA learned that lesson in the 1992 Olympics; the MLB did nothing for over 20 years, and what it got was kicked out of the Olympics, its only window to the world. I have not seen so many bad business decisions made in my life. From three years to four years and now six years with the pandemic, this should be done every two years to gain real momentum and the desire to participate, or at least more stars could play without having to commit to every tournament.
the four year gap is one of the great things about the World Cup. It's a perfect cycle. Less than this it loses value due to happening too much. More than this it's a long period. It's such a perfect alternance that it's the presidential term in many nations, including the US
If Ohtani is out there during his contract year and risking a $500M payday, then America's elite pitchers have zero excuses for sitting out.

If this doesn't inspire their teammates, there is literally no hope for them.
I definitely want to see this WBC put a fire under both of them to lead this team to a playoff berth. Ohtani can go wherever he wants. I want them to get there for Trout because if Shohei leaves he can go win a ring somewhere else.
Go Angels!!
They don't know to bunt and steal, running lazily and prefer hitting than pitching
I was saying the same thing
USA is all about go big or go home, and they went home
@@baatar Agree because throughout the history of the MLB it been mostly about strikeouts and home runs and not about all the other things that you can do in a game
Baseball is fun to watch when strategies are involved.
Baseball is back
Right now, their is too much money in MLB, it was really nice to see all these teams play with passion to win.
Ohtani should have also won the MVP. The pitching adds way more than Judge ever could.
Crazy how nobody complained this game took too long or thought that ohtani needed a pitch clock
That is because of how great the game was
That’s because the games were meaningful. Nobody wants to see a 4 hour regular season mlb game
@@westhoodqualzini7884 Agree because then it would go into cricket territory which some games in cricket can last for days
I wanted the USA 🇺🇸 to win but I’m not surprised the Japanese 🇯🇵 won they fanatical about baseball ⚾️

Baseball joins Soccer in having a real international world cup. And the fans are the winners. Say what you think about American football and basketball being the most popular sports in the US, Baseball and Soccer are the best in the world.
It should be significant to folks who have ignored the WBC.Lets hope so.
it already was in 2017. At least for Trout.
He said that if the opportunity to play came around again, he probably would do it. I think it was for SI
This is the first time I have ever seen Buster wearing glasses. I didn't recognize him at first.
The real World Series
Hopefully the WBC showed the MLB that it doesn't need the new rules changes.
I agree this was entertaining without the rules. But gotta acknowledge these guys didn’t take a year on the mound and hours to get set in the box. The shift wasn’t as prevalent and guys hit to contact. The game wasn’t slowed down as much as the mlb had been before the rule changes because these guys played the right way
Stephen A. Smith: "But can he speak English?"
Lol omg I completely forgot about the time he said that cus ohtani just keeps on getting W and accolades
Just classic small-minded American racism and xenophobia
8:00 In Japanese baseball, few phrases are more overused than "Justo Meeto" (which is an abbreviation for "just meet the ball", though it is most often used by announcers, to indicate that somebody made good contact). In the US, little leaguers are often told this, but by the time they reach high school, almost every American kid is swinging for the fence on every pitch. In Japan, hitting coaches are just as likely to tell players this at the top Pro level. Stop trying to smash the ball. Just make contact.
THAT is the difference between the two varieties of baseball. We have seen which one works best.
What a game
” Be able to come outta bullpen as a starter, and you know it's SHOW time" Mike Trout
I agree with the pitching but The US literally took all their top position players that the only ones missing were Judge and Harper (injury).
@@rasiel957 I wouldn't exactly call Alonso, Anderson, McNeil, nor Witt Jr some of the country's best position players but I see where you're coming from; USA was loaded in terms of their lineup.
blown*--->> they would've blewn out. I love Americans, but you guys have forgotten how to use past participles.
@@MA-ck4wu Yes, because grammar is sooooo important in a TH-cam comment section
@@eulalawrence841 On TH-cam it's not important, true, but in general it is. You and many others would make this same mistake in real life.
Just imagine what the usa team coulda been with a bunch of aces as starting pitchers
Would have been nice to have certainly, but let's be honest, the pitching did a fine job last night. For all the talk about us not having our aces, it was the offense that let us down in the final.
@@Klako-ls6yt the usa pitchers did their job heldin Japan at 3 runs
Its the american all star hitters that are shutdown by NPB relievers
@@Klako-ls6yt To be fair that happen because Japan had their best pitchers pitching.
Idk but the all-star starting lineup got 2 runs...
Now imagine if the Japanese pitchers were playing with a Japanese ball (or Japanese umpires). They were stellar with some serious disadvantages.

Only teams USA does NOT have a winning record against: Mexico (1-3), DR (1-2), Korea (0-1), Puerto Rico (3-3) and now Japan (2-2)
What a great tournament, also what in the world were the Dodgers thinking not bringing back Trea Turner???
trea loves the east coast and plus he cost the dodgers a trip to the nlcs so its fine

Over 60 million people watching in Korea? There are only 51 million people living in South Korea.
Team USA would maybe recrute the best players in MLB at each position from the next tournament.
I think you mean best pitchers, because your lineup was one of the best in the tournament. Only Judge and Harper could have made it better
Yes I meant that
If our best pitchers played in the WBC, it's game over, USA wins. The pitchers USA had were not great and other teams had their best pitchers. There's no excuse for MLB pitchers to not participate if Ohtani is out there giving his all. Dude is on his final year of current contract and inline for biggest contract ever. Japan sees it as an honor to play for the team.

Interesting how NFL is most popular in US but internationally MLB, NBA, and NHL are more popular than the NFL.
El fútbol americano será el deporte más popular en estados unidos y ya yo prefiero que un deporte sea famoso en muchos países y no solo un país
People need to stop lambasting Lars Nootbar for playing for Japan💯
Can you imagine what the media would say if USA basketball loses..NBA is expected to win every game.
Japan vs Italy in the WBC quarterfinals had 46 million people watching in Japan
ohtani is a cub
they do it in Soccer all over the world... the USA is the only country on earth, where their best players don't want to represent their country.

It’s confusing for foreigners to understand basically it’s changing from sport to sport ( it can be 1or 2 or 4 or 5 national teams representing these two main British isles) and what their history / politics is in this green and pleasant land is …
In this case it Might be because in some team sports (like rugby/cricket/field hockey) Ireland (unlike as in soccer with its two national Irish teams) has a “joint “ team representing the whole island with players from both Northern Ireland (the 4th nation off the uk but not part off gb) and the republic off Ireland 🇮🇪 …… leaving the other 3 home nations off England/Scotland and Wales either having their own teams ( soccer always outside the odd Olympics tournament-rugby most off the time - field hockey half the time) or having a joint great British team …… but honestly have no idea in baseball …… but it won’t be the only time gb is wrongly used as in the Olympics we are called team gb 🇬🇧 which is just because it a catchy name because it’s really an FULL United Kingdom’s team …… as anyone from Northern Ireland who is at the Olympics will be in team gb 🇬🇧 if not representing Ireland 🇮🇪 .
I don't understand why international baseball fans and federations have to wait to mlb to do an international tournament.

What are you talking about? Baseball is played everywhere in the Caribbean and Central and South America. Baseball isn't all American. Hockey is a Canadian sport. If America actually sent their best players…but too many players/organizations care more about $$$ and their own self interest than the passion for the game.
Same goes for USA Basketball
I agree on baseball, but NBA since 90s let the best players to compete at the Olympics. In 2021 Lillard, KD, Tatum, Green were on the USA Basketball
US patriotism has its limits
The Angels will keep him as long as they are competing. So he is already available for a trade
It's such a perfect alternance that it's the presidential term in many nations, including the US
He's done that before in NPB. 😒
