      I have a replica smooth bore flintlock pistol and from two yards, I never miss. With my smooth bore 60 cal. flintlock fowler I can shoot a four inch group bulls eye all day at twenty five yards and a consistent ten to twelve inch grouping at 50 yards. The trick is not to fire it accidentally too soon with your finger on the trigger while drawing it from concealment.

      I imagine that this organization budgets towards training, buying reproductions, and buying practice gear. These sorts of clubs, as a fringe group already, don't really have a lot of money to begin with - This short was probably done with spare change that they scrounged up, as quality filming, equipment, and editing takes a lot of money - As for acting, there are simply very few actors who can match the technique and stamina that these guys show, as these people have dedicated 10+ years to reconstructive archeology in interpreting the historical masters' fencing treatises.
      What I mean to say is that, given who these guys are (not a film school, but a historical fencing school), these shorts are very impressive!

      @@ultimatecrusader9907 Halberds don't "decrease your defence". Reach is a huge advantage, so a spear, halberd or two-handed sword would have been much better. Out of all of these the halberd is a bit slower, so I'd probably pick a spear or 2h sword.

      @@cwmyr Reach would be a good advantage, if you have the space to maneuver with. But since these two were fighting inside an enclosed space, reach in the context of polearms becomes a liability. And it only really makes sense if you're dealing with multiple opponents, or you're facing one opponent in armor (like in a judicial duel).
      Plus, as Ultimate Crusader stated, he only had a limited time frame to select a weapon. If three seconds meant a fighting chance against certain death, you gotta make do with the first thing you have on-hand.

      Interesting trivia when my local group was training, the shorter and heavier "cutting" blades were far faster than the longer and lighter "thrusting" blades except in the pure thrust, so all else being equal, the result was correct once the messer got past the point of the rapier.
      I'm not a great swordsman, but it got annoying enough to the rapier centric SCA locals that they banned me from using "cut and thrust" swords even when I was only thrusting.

    I really like the cutting off and barrier-making with the rapier. It really turns the fight into objectives.
    Messer guy wants to escape, rapier guy wants to capture/kill messer guy, so he has to stop him from running away, and he does this by using his reach to defend from being overrun and to get in the way of his opponent.

      Jerry Martin: You have a false impression of the smooth bore pistol. I have had one for over 40 years and have successfully competed with rifled barreled pistols at 25 yards. Well maintained, it goes off when I want it too and, inside 10 yards, always hits what I intend to hit. I have never had to face an armed opponent with it, but It has a 60 cal. barrel and with it, I have successfully managed to bring down a white tail deer.
      I believe however, than the pistol in the video may be anachronistic. By the costuming depicted, a match lock might have been more appropriate, albeit much more difficult to conceal.

Also I love details of dude first grabbing what's easier to get and then trying to get better weapon!

      It's far easier to hire someone who knows nothing about swordsmanship than someone who does. A shame, really; there are so many talented practitioners out there, but producers tend not to care (unless it's Japanese swordsmanship - for some reason it's "better" than European because Katanas can cut through space and time, apparently)

    • @dires
      @dires 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@appleyanimator6541 I think people are just not used to think of European swordsmanship as something on par with "Eastern Martial Arts" (which such a broad category that it becomes useless as a description and completely lump a lot of different cultures and traditions under some nebulous "eastern" thing. ). This is problematic because Asian people are not some kind of mystical martial savants that "all know kung-fu".

    That was rad. Is there a villian? I liked both participants. Very good production, in my opinion; this is a great short film. If I understand anything about swordplay, you keep it as simple and effective as possible. This example seems to show the economy and effectiveness of planned procedures. Obviously it shows the inherent dangers of living on the edge. But it also illustrates the fluidity possible when you plan for the unexpected, but train to be effective.
