I am so sad that WeatherScan is gone. Comcast dropped it in 2017 and I was so upset! I used to have my TV tuned to it all night to listen to the music. It was so soothing.
The shutdown of Weatherscan happened due in part to the discontinuation of production of the parts that were needed to support the aging equipment for the original generation of the IntelliStar, which began to be decommissioned in November 2015. As such, the shutdown of the service will mark the end of the final stage of the decommissioning process. The IntelliStar was not designed to support high-definition broadcasts, and its ultimate replacement known as the IntelliStar 2 was designed for use with high-definition broadcasts. Local Now is Weatherscan's replacement service.
That wouldn't have been a problem if they wanted to invest the time/resources in porting weatherscan to more modern hardware or making HTML based. But they did not, they let it die on the vine because viewership was already low enough, executives couldn't justify the cost of the investment so it died. They just basically let it run in "LTS" mode and then cut it off when operating costs became too expensive as parts dried up. The ultimate reason for Weatherscan's downfall was not just poor negotiations, but the fact of the matter that the way we consume content has largely changed. What's the first thing the general consumer thinks about when needing to know what the weather is going to be like? and that's not by turning on the TV anymore either...
Man, I used to ALWAYS always have Weatherscan on as a kid and in high school. I was so bummed when they took it away. I have the whole collection of weatherscan music from 1996-2008 lol. I'm glad you covered this so I don't feel so goofy for loving Weatherscan so much lol.
When I was a toddler in the early 2000s i lived in a pretty big house in the outskirts of town, and anytime me and my mom went swimming in the pool, there always seemed to be a storm that would roll in from across the field behind our backyard. Coming into the house while drying off with a towel, hearing distant thunder while also listening to weatherscan , and feeling the breeze through the open window is something I miss a lot these days.
I can still remember the times when I was younger still living at my childhood home and every morning when my grandma got ready for work I would sit down on her bed and talk to her until she had to leave. I would trail behind her as she would go downstairs to leave for work she would give me a kiss goodbye and close the door and I would run to the nearest window and watch her drive by. Then I would walk back upstairs sit on her bed and watch the weatherscan until I fell asleep again.
I loved the Weatherscan Channel because they would often play the awesome music from the regular Weather Channel's Local Forecast/on the 8s breaks, but without interrupting or talking over it a lot.
I miss Weatherscan a lot, suddenlink carried the weatherscan up until the very end in 2022 I will forever remember listening to the music on the channel during late summer nights
Weatherscan was an essential channel for many for a time, though the easier accessibility of on-the-go weather info thanks to smartphones largely negated the need for such a channel after some time. A shame that since there's something almost timeless about the channel itself, probably because it had remained the same for a long time as the regular Weather Channel evolved. I've got tons of nostalgic memories relating to Weatherscan specifically,. From the memorable products and music, to the reliable source of weather info which was really beneficial for a weather geek like me. The archivists of the network from all its eras are true heroes, especially for its early days when the channel was rare to come by in most television markets. The passion from fans still lives on though, as emulators have cropped up which try to replicate the charm Weatherscan once had. Its death was inevitable given the discontinuing of the technology which powers it in 2015, and declining viewership as the years went on. There will never truly be another channel like it again, but its legacy will remain.

i really appreciate of you giving us the history of weatherscan, and understanding just how much people use them so often back in the 90's and 00's. and i'm honestly glad there were enough fans to make a weatherscan emulator. is not the best, but very close to how i used to watch it as a kid.

i miss the vibes of weatherscan so much. the weather channel was a big part of my childhood, waking up on a sunny saturday florida morning to hear those jazzy tunes coming from the living room tv... thankfully there are emulators that people run on livestreams with current information but still, it isnt the same

This was a sad day for me on December 5, 2017. I was so sad when I had to say good bye to Weather Scan. But, I can re watch all the good moments on TH-cam. Goodbye WeatherScan. You will be missed forever. December 5, 2017 was a bad day for a lot of Comcast/Xfinity Members who had to say good bye to Weather Scan.

It's real shamed that my favorite channel is gone back in 2017. In fact, I literally so thankful for this wonderful channel. Because of wonderful relaxing music that help me calm from my anxiety fear of being sleeping my room by myself when i was 12 year old during 2006. During the time of 2006/2007, every single night i literally leave my tv on all days and lesve this channel on that help me sleep and relax easier than sleep in dark. I definitely love it alot while i listen to entire 27 tracks. Later in 2008, 33 track added that more thing better. But formally the cable Suddenlink remove this channel at 2011. But luckily for 2012, I found website where i able download weatherscan music and listen to it on my 3DS or DSi XL anytime i want. I keep download files safe until 11 years later. I still had weatherscan music in my phone nowadays since 2017
I was born On 11/9/09, 14 Years Before The Deadline Of Weatherscan, I was like In My head when I first discovered and said “What is this about, Why is the music Playing for?” Then I was starting to get obsessed with Weatherscan Around 2015 or so, I would turn on my tv and just let it play. I also drummed along with Track Number 2 By beating in A chair of some sort. In the current year 2023, I’m Still making memories of Weatherscan, One memory I made is that I had a Flashback of the Playlist of music, And then in 2022, Twcjim Retrieved Some of the songs When the Playlist of music was split to 33 Tracks, While the rest of the music got corrupted. My favorite track to this day is Number 8, Number 22, 11, And 13. When i was on Yt one time in 2022, I Randomly found a livestream that was located in Mount Holly, NJ, And it has Some of the Weatherscan Songs on There, And I was surprised I found it, and that’s another memory I made of Weatherscan. My dad asked me “What do you know about that music” I just shrugged my shoulders
theres a weatherscan revival and weather channel did a thing called retros on the 8s which is a remake of the old weatherstar/weatherscan just in 16:9 and crisp
I think the Fall Of Weatherscan really Started when TWC Retired the Original Intellistar in 2015 what they should have done was update Weatherscan when the New Intellistar debuted since the last update it had was in 2005 well other than The Weather Icons changed three times since 2005

Recently started listening and relaxing to weatherscans. This video was very informative and well put together. The rise of technology definitely does render weatherscans useless in comparison, but that soundtrack is just too good, no wonder why some companies stayed loyal lol
As soon as FiOS completely dropped the channel I just knew the downfall was a mile away sadly. Outside of negotiations falling short though, I just feel like the Weather Group didn’t put enough effort into keeping the channel up to par. Like you had mentioned they always used the same IntelliStar for so many years and that it wasn’t able to support HD. Im sure the channel could’ve still been alive if the Weather Group cared enough to keep it updated and was willing to negotiate well with the cable providers that carried the channel.
Weather apps are complete garbage. Nothing but worthless intrusive ads and pop-ups. The ending of the Weatherscan channel is yet another example of things that are very important in our lives, deemed unimportant by the masses and big business. My heart was ripped out when Weatherscan was taken down. What makes it worse, is that there are hundreds of useless cable channels still functioning, but the one channel that had information that pertained to our lives every day, was dropped. Just horrible...

Nothing has matched Weatherscan. I used this feature every day. I hate regular weather channels as they go on and on about regions I don't care about. WS was perfect cause you didn't have to wait though a bunch of irrelevant information to get to your area's forecast. I also dislike most weather apps cause they simply don't have the same level of regional info, (or jazzy music!) I lament its loss.

You state there was a breakdown in negotiations between Dish and Weather Group television (which was owned by NBC Universal at the time I believe), but you show the logo of the Weather Network, which is a Canadian cable outlet owned by Pelmorex and is NOT affiliated in any way with TWC. Was this an oversight on your part?
I think twc was the downfall of Weatherscan I stopped watching TWC When they stopped being weather 24/7 if they cared about Weatherscan than they should have updated it to today's standards the last major update the channel had was in 2005 other than the icons being changed twice they should have updated the channel in 2013

The tragic irony here is that Weatherscan would probably have been cheaper to operate after an update. IntelliStar units were very expensive custom computers, because back in the day, that was the only hardware capable of running such a thing (automated graphics with music, etc). Today, a fairly basic PC could handle all that, with perhaps some added redundancy for emergencies (dual power supplies). And parts wouldn’t be expensive. So, we could have had HD WeatherScan *and* the operating cost would have been lower for them! (Not sure about the cost of updating the software to run on such hardware, but, I doubt it would’ve been tremendous.)
I didn’t know they dropped weatherscan completely but this still breaks my heart knowing that I will never be able to watch the weatherscan ever again…at least there’s footage from it on the internet now and everytime I watch it I feel like a kid again watching and listening to amazing jazz music.

Thank goodness emulation exists, because you can just emulate Weatherscan on your PC/Phone nowadays.
cc17926 does live stream the weather scan as well. They seem to be working out some bugs but they normally stream daily.
