    That is fascinating. I'm really curious about how that gyro assembly is structured. The seeker head seems to be almost free floating?

      It's technically a galvo. A gimbled device that will have two axis coils and will become rigid once powered up. There will actually be 4 coils. Two for movement, and two for feedback.

    The primary mirror of the seeker telescope is made from either cast and polished Aluminium or Beryllium not Germanium.

    So you got a seeker-head from a dismantled SA-7B Grail, it's a pity you didn't get the seeker electronics that went with it.

      Yes I know, I get what I can ! I know the electronics are a stack of round circuit boards, secured together with standoffs, attached to the 3 broken screw theads you can see on my seeker.

      that's what I was thinking. I imagine the PbS sensor is probably still usable. the mirrors look pristine. If the gyro and torque coils are still working, it could most likely still work.

      Not easy to tell really, must be glass, as it is still perfectly clear with no scratches. Seems quite thin and blends perfectly with the head body.

    Interesting how the parts of a decommissioned missiles are sold on Ebay openly and for what purposes. Can you comment on this please?

    • @msylvain59
      @msylvain59  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are just scrap surplus, generally sold for display / collection purpose, the most common parts on ebay are the Sidewinder winglets and gyro spinner. For the other parts they usually are one of a kind, once they are gone, they might never be available again.

    • @msylvain59

      @@realSethMeyers There is quite often sidewinders winglets available, for other parts try for instance "gyroscope" or "seeker head" in militaria and aircraft parts categories. However some items will not have any usefull keywords and can be found only by a tedious and complete browsing of those categories, to repeat on a regular basis, patience and perseverance required !

    En tout cas meme si tu ne peut m'apporter de reponse il est très interessant de voir cette pièce ^^

    • @KorbenDalasCZ

      it is a gyroscopically stabilized mirror, the whole is made of magnetic metal, in the middle under the black head there is a temperature exchanger and modulation disks on which there are black and white fields and pulsars, the mirror reflects ir waves to the sensor through these modulation disks, which creates a pulse on the sensor and a set of coils changes the magnetic field so that the point that is projected onto the sensor via the modulation discs is as close as possible to the center, another set of coils, on the other hand, detects the angle of the gyroscopic mirror on the axis of the rocket, this information about the angle then goes to the autopilot, which uses the control surfaces of the rocket to correct the direction so that the angle between the gyroscopic mirror and the rocket is equal to zero. these two systems ensure that the warhead follows a warm target and the autopilot then directs it to this target. Very soulfully described.

      @@KorbenDalasCZnice explanation!

    • @saidyakhyoev7411
      @saidyakhyoev7411 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If I remember the way it works is the gyroscope assembly uncages upon firing and then tracks the target smoothly while missile body can wobble and turn a bit in flight. The angular difference between where gyroscope mirror points and missile body is used to command the fins. If I understood correctly the modulating reticle provides precision information about the target which is used to turn the gyro mirror assembly(by applying magnetic fields). The technical process is how Korben describes above.
      At least in the next generation missiles like Igla, the sensor actually does not see the target if the missile point directly at it (there is that cooler and a pointed spike in the middle of the lens) - sensor sees only the error signal, i.e. if IR spot appeared off-center.
      Also, not sure about Strela, but following generation if missiles in the beginning of flight actually fly “ahead” of the target based on proportional navigation (maintaining constant angle to collision) implying that the gyro assembly would look a bit sideways relative to where missile is flying. This way the missile reaches the target faster/expands less energy

      jascivious That's true, but this is not an example of that in action. Strela-2 began production in the 60's. The patent you see was issued in 1991.

      @zxzxzxz zxzxzxzx Not a case of theft, but the fact that the Russian invention wouldn't be patented worldwide, in fact patents allow information to spread. So there's an American patent similar to an existent system simply because the patent office figured there was nothing similar enough patented before and accepted the application.
