I really love Bach's concept of music as being absolute, where harmony and counterpoint are the focus. There are definitely works of his that are idiomatic, where he specifies the instrument to be played. But, in the case of the Kunst Der Fuge, he leaves those blank.

It’s a nice opinion there isnt any proof that was the case. It wasn’t common practice to designate the instrument in the early to mid 1700s
