We have a non-SharePoint intranet and have already run into issues with Embedding of videos being a problem, since that relies on the underlying site permissions that most people don't know how to change especially in Onedrive (e.g. "Share -> anyone in my org with the link" doesn't work for embed). You didn't really touch on Company-wide Channels in Stream (Classic), which in my tenant is 90%+ of all the channels that people created. I assume those will go into a folder in the creator's OneDrive.
Thanks for watching, Kevin. That's actually my next video I've already got prepped for next week! I'll cover that when doing embed codes, it doesn't actually grant permissions and you have to do that separately. In that video I'll go through giving access at the file, folder, and site level. Hope it'll help! Company-wide channels actually won't have a default location in the migration tool. I've heard two strategies floated for how people will handle those. Some orgs say they're planning a central SharePoint location for their company-wide channels to keep things together and some are going to do SPO sites for each channel. We have very view company-wide channels in my org owned by only about a dozen people. Our plan is to work with each of those owners individually and map where they want their videos to go and then do a white-glove type of migration for them.
A good approach, I have also often been asked how and where to save the videos in the new Stream. Especially if you want to set up a kind of internal "TH-cam" portal again. Folders are a good structuring option and if you combine them with metadata or classifications in additional columns, you can also access the videos with additional filter criteria across folders with the highlight content webpart and display them on a topic page, for example, regardless of which folder they are stored in.
Thanks Michael! Yea I've gone back and forth over the past months between folders or sites or document libraries to reconstruct a channel concept. I landed on folders for my recommendation because it's pretty simple compared to a full doc library for each channel. There's so much flexibility in SharePoint. I'm excited to see what creative ways people find for curating their videos using custom columns and conditional formatting. It's pretty open-ended, which is scary for a lot of folks new to the SharePoint world. Hopefully great examples will emerge that inspire people to really dive into all the possibilities SharePoint brings!
We're facing an issue where for some videos we want to prevent download, but SharePoint's View Only custom permission doesn't prevent download for video files (it does work for Office/PDFs, though). So, I'm still trying to find a solution for this. Could be a very big deal with certain kinds of internal videos.
@@SharePointCommunity Nope. That doesn't prevent someone who has access to the site with Read from downloading the files. We have to make the site permissions as Read because these videos will be embedded into a non-SharePoint site (so the sharing settings "anyone in my org with the link" doesn't work).
I have a question about searching for videos. I would like to setup videos from around the world in an easily searchable video library (like youtube). I setup a Team for about 200 people around the world to store video files; however, when you try to search for a topic, I only want it to display videos related to the topic, not other documents. Is their a way with the new stream / sharepoint platform to only search for videos?
Hi John, great video. So what's the approach if you just have Channels on there own i.e. outside of a Group? I.e. before groups were a thing. Do you just setup a SharePoint Site and migrate the Channel videos to the new site?
Is there any way to move Stream videos out of SharePoint? In our organization, video-happy people are chewing up storage space. Over the Thanksgiving week (a slow week), storage used increased by 3 GB due to videos.
I use MS Stream with Canvas, an academic LMS (Learning Management System). The group has always been automatically created and linked to my students. When I go into Stream Classic, I see my new group. I don't know where to find the group in the new Stream. I need to share files with students, but the membership needs to be automatic and linked to the LMS. Can you tell me how to add folders that will be accessible to my students?
Hi Barbara, I'm afraid I'm not very familiar with Canvas LMS myself but I have one idea of something you can check. If you look at the Group in Stream (classic) on the main page of that group there should be a blue rectangle icon that says "M365". If it does then that means the group is part of a Microsoft 365 group and there should be a SharePoint associated with that. To find the SharePoint site, just go to office.com and search in the top-center for the name of Group from Stream. You should be able to find that site in the Sites tab of the search results. I hope that helps!
Always great content John and awesome to see the earth graphic living on. Brings back great memories.
Thanks Lance!

thanks John. all roads lead to that Stream migration next year. Have a great Holiday season. Hope to catch you in the new year.
Thanks Phil, happy holidays!
