The most gorgeous, ductile and seductive voice of any soprano. The blanket of cream and velvety sumptuous sound is not enough to describe her supremacy.
I had never heard the radio broadcast of her late take of "Tu che invoco" in such optimal sound conditions. You become aware while listening to this that the very year of her retirement, her incandescent lava like tonal color, the width of her voice, the unctuosity of her tone with these exquisite "meowed" like delicate portamenti that, to me, are her signature, were plain intact. To me, she remains the greatest female operatic vocalist of the record era.
Amazing singing..the power and delicacy and the velvety column of deeply supported tone, blissfully free of thatintrusive vibrato that one hears so often. Brava, Rosa!
Callas sounds nothing like Ponselle. Ponselle's voice was effortless, liquid velvet. While I will admit she was a great opera singer, Callas worked very hard to get the notes out and her voice was rather metallic.
There was Ponselle and then everyone else. Callas was no Ponselle on ANY level. How anyone can listen to this and even THINK of Callas is beyond comprehension.
Tu che invoco is an astonishing piece of singing, ..the great column of sound, powerful yet exquisitely modulated and so steady in emission. She is a balm to the ear in this era of vibrato ridden sopranos.
I don't like this slow tempo. Blah. But it is interesting that Ponselle and Callas, both Americans, ended their careers singing Carmen. Sound quality for the Rossini is unlistenable.

An instrument of the finest possible quality, a rare gem indeed!
Ponselle: the GOAT of female classical singers.
Magnificent voice, dark gold!!!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful testament to this incredible talent.

La voix angelique! La Divina.

I have known these broadcast recordings for a long time, yet it feels I'm rediscovering them, with such a great sound improvement! Thank you!
Hearing this, I hear the historical connection (and vocal similarities) to Callas. Extraordinary!

The only similarity to Callas is in your mind
