I use my own urine as the primary nitrogen input for my large vegetable garden compost. Home made compost is the only fertilizer I've been using for many years, and my garden is wonderfully productive, providing a significant fraction of my food every year. Among other things, it helps me feel more connected to the land and life in general.
We love hearing stories like this from the peecycling community! We would love it if you took our Community Science Survey where we are collecting information from home peecyclers and their experiences. If you're interested, the survey can be found here: www.surveymonkey.com/r/CGM52WX
@@RichEarthInstituteMedia Done!
Thank you!!!@@fxm5715
This is a wonderful Project for humanity and the environment. I utilize urine on my 8,000 sq. ft. garden, it saves me money on fertilizer and with current fertilizer prices going through the roof it makes even more sense now.
Wow, that's great to hear! Will you take our survey to share your experience? www.surveymonkey.com/r/X752ZGX
Can you just poop in the garden too ?
@@JamesFulkerson-q7n no that’s more complicated issue because of the bacteria
I’ve been using it on my veggies and houseplants for four years now, about 1 cup per gallon of water as a supplement with other fertilizer, works well.
Way back in the mid 60's I was growing up in a village in Northern Bavaria in Germany. The farmers collected their animals urine into big tanks and spraying it on their fields in the winter.
I hope that the farms using this urine will make that information public. I have used urine as a fertilizer, but I think as a public repository I think there are some issues to consider (i.e. the health and diet of the volunteers).
How exactly do you use it???
It's pasteurized and sterile. Farms use a lot of cow manure, so you're already eating food grown from sh*t. We as a society has to overcome our fear of urine and poo if we are to recycle our waste. It's probably easier to swallow (literally) if the recycled fertilizer is turned into shiny white pellets or something.
I do this and my garden is amazing
That's awesome! Would you be willing to share your experience in our community science survey? www.surveymonkey.com/r/X752ZGX
Hi how often do you use it in your garden...
I love this! I have been peeing in a bucket for 20 years because my dogs convinced me that it breaks down compost fastest...they always love to pee on piles of leaves and dogs know best.
This great indeed. Am executive Director " Go Back To The Land Zambia" advocate for rural development through agriculture and domestic tourism. I wish to learn more
Back to basics and common sense 😊
It would be great just as a lawn fertilizer. Using the home tank collection and an AI augmented robot lawn mower, the mower could deliver diluted urine around the yard and keep track of where it left off so it knows where on the lawn it needs to start delivery on the next refill run.

God gave us the ability to make our own free fertilizer. We have been so dumb with our blessings. Let's stop literally pissing away a free fertilizer!
Forever grateful for the abundance we're blessed with!
Closer we build our systems to natural recycling system of earth the easier life gets.
I retort charcoal at ~500°c,urinate into char, add worm castings, add rainwater, aerate it with fish tank bubbler air pump and use the contents to feed my gardens… cheap and easy but way more active than and stable than NPK fertiliser which has to be modified depending on the plant’s outcome whether growing greens, fruits or tubers…
Great byproduct to use to generate heat in my compost pile during the Winter months;
Great for inoculating biochar.
That's what we hear! We hope to do further research on this (and soil health) soon. If you have a sec, we'd love for you to share how you do this via our community science survey: www.surveymonkey.com/r/X752ZGX
I mix my homemade charcoal in a cement mixer with a bag of granite chips from home depot and enough urine to make a slurry.
After an hour or so I stop the mixer and let it rest for a week or so. Then I run the mixer for an hour then i dump the slurry into a strainer made from 2x4s and 1/2" rabbit cage wire over a wheel barrow or concrete mixing tub.
I hose off the granite chips for reuse.
I work the biochar into my garden beds. It helps if you have poor soil.
If you have great soil already it won't make much difference.
I think it's worth doing if you have poor soil.
Many people need to get away from the "Yuck" factor of this waste and think of it as "WOW" 😃lets use this to our advantage"
Thanks for this footage &for leaving annoying back ground music Out..
I only use urine and compost tea in my hydroponics.
great program. but all soils are different in UK soil amendments(rock dust) are not often used presumably USA has soil amendments which work i would have liked to see experiments with pots and a few plants per pot in a more controlled environment . I have yet to see benefits of biochar but charcoal does have great chemical interaction s i think . Getting soil in great condition in a sustainable way is the goal compost and testing soils is one way forward.
Is that home pasterization system available yet by chance???
I’m tossing up the idea of straw bale gardening so do you think I should save our urine and use it to initially condition the bales.
hello thank you for the educative video, my question is how do you treat inffected urine or make it safe and free from diseases?
And pharmaceutical waste we expel..
Renting RV space on a smallholding, I'd extend times between tank draining by peeing outside after dark, specifically on a row of grape vines outside our door. The nearest ones were too brightly lit, the furthest too far so I split my spot between the middle ones. How's anyone going to know, right? Guess which vines had 4x the grapes than the outer ones?
Since peak phosphorous, I think the recycling of urine is long overdue.
Love to hear it! If you're interested, please share your experience in our survey: www.surveymonkey.com/r/X752ZGX
gas and flatulence can be saved; i used a balloon and pass the gas through water; then used to power a generator
It goes onto my compost heap whenever the weather permits
Thanks for this valueable information
Thanks for watching! #peethechange
It never fails that when I get to the back of my property that I have to pee
So, I keep a wide mouth 2-1/2 gallon kitty litter jugs back there.
So when I have to pee I put it in the jugs.
When I need fertilizer I put half a gallon of pee in a 5 gallon bucket
With four gallons of rain water and I water my plants with it.
The urine changes to ammonia after a week or so in the jug so I don't worry about pathogens. Nothing I know of can live in a strong ammonia solution.
Plants love it.
What a great system! We would love it if you took our Community Science Survey where we are collecting information from home peecyclers and their experiences. If you're interested, the survey can be found here: www.surveymonkey.com/r/CGM52WX
I watched the video in its entirety, but I don't remember seeing how often an area should be treated. Numerous comments below ask that same question. While other comments have been responded to, this one has not. Thank you.
Need to figure out how to collect from my horse and cows
😂 The Dutch are on it for you! www.fwi.co.uk/farm-life/video-this-new-dutch-robot-will-harvest-urine-from-cows
How is the fecal material disposed? Any composting toilets along with urine catchments?
Several of our local urine donors have composting toilets with urine diversion. We also have a fleet of portable toilets that collect both solids and urine.
@@RichEarthInstituteMedia Thank you.
The farmers must be happy! Is the trailer/reservoir they use to apply the urine gravity fed? Or does it have a pump?
Gravity fed! You can view a video of one of our farm partners applying here: th-cam.com/video/LkaedWxXtTA/w-d-xo.html
@@RichEarthInstituteMedia I'll have a look, thanks!
How do you pasteurize urine?
Im on several psych drugs. I use urine in my compost mainly as I compost a lot of paper products. Then I use it in my garden. Am I getting a double dose of meds? Lmao
You'd do better to drink yer urine to get a double dose. Seriously some people drink it as medicine and a way to recycle their vitamins. And sacraments!
@@MareSimone1
Ive heard of urine therapy. Not my cup of tea lol
We've actually done research on this! You can read about our pharmaceutical uptake research on our website here: richearthinstitute.org/research-results/pharmaceutical-study/ Short answer: the drugs will only be present in tissues of crops fertilized with urine in *very* small amounts. It seems most drugs actually degrade quite well in the soil.
@@RichEarthInstituteMedia
Oh wow, thats awesome!
@Ava Anderson-Kemper We agree!
What are the pharmaceuticals doing to the insects?
This is a great question! We are currently seeking funding to do research into the effects of pharmaceuticals in urine fertilizer on soil health - including microbial life. We would love to know the effects on insects as well.. You can see our results on pharmaceuticals so far on our website here: richearthinstitute.org/research-results/pharmaceutical-study/
Haven't watched this full vid yet, currently doing so. I'm sure I need yalls help because I am currently building a 100% off grid/blackwater purification system that runs through out currently being built paninee/ingrown greenhouse. I have many questions that I know yall have already solved. Please point us in the way. & I already think we should most likely obtain one of yalls comodes.
...so wait... I should separate Our urine from our other waste water?
My design is two IBC tote collection tanks (harvest gas?) that flows into a four enclosed black barrel (50gal) filters, followed by five open topped, water 🪴 🌿 plants, with little fish🐟 I guess. So, do I need a separate system for our urine?
I'm thinking a blue water jug urine vaporizer?
We would recommend diverting the urine to maximize its fertilizer value. You can also use urine in vermiponics systems, such as this one: th-cam.com/video/5YnTsXpKAb4/w-d-xo.html
Can I turn my 1 acre into helping out with this initiative? I’m in NC
That would be amazing! You could come to one of our webinars this Spring to learn how to implement this and ask us your questions. Sign up to our newsletter for dates & info on how to attend: richearthinstitute.org/get-involved/newsletter/
Always ask for permission first, that way your local government officials can control what you do. Very nice
Sarcasm right? Fck them LOL
For use on commercial farms, you may need a permit (see our page about it here richearthinstitute.org/our-work/regulation/). But for home gardeners, as long as you don't sell the produce no permit is required.
Are the nutrients in the urine plant available? Or do I have to wait for soil microbial activity to break it down?
It's directly available, pretty much like liquid artificial fertilizer. Which is a good thing if the crop needs a lot of N quickly, not so good if the crop needs it slowly over time. The same risks and downsides of applying artificial fertilizers apply to urine. In that sense, I think extracting struvite from urine is a more interesting approach. It's a slow-release 6-29-0 fertilizer that's more gentle to the soil microbiology, as I understand it. It's also very concentrated and lightweight, either as a powder or as granules.
@@ximono isn’t it true that with applying too much urine your eventually have saline buildup in the soil that can affect your plant though versus artificial fertilizer but arguably wouldn’t happen, so I’m sure you could just use normal water to wash the salt out of it
@@aig9672Ye Yeah, it's definitely a risk. With artificial fertilizers too, but I think urine contains much more salts. Struvite should be safer, as it's almost pure magnesium, ammonium and phosphate. Would be interesting to hear what Rich Earth Institute has to say about this.
Are y’all still active on this project?
Joeseph Jenkins book “HUMANURE” handbook simpler, easier, and much more cost efficient.
You may say it's a good fertilizer, but the fact that humans are being medicated, feed toxins, & water contaminated alot of out urine will need 2go thru a remedial reclaimation process using mushrooms, biochar etc.
Talk about taking the piss.
