The whole thing with marks defining what they do and not who they are coincides with PerfectBlue97's comic Without Magic, where Princess Celestia took away Twilight's horn/magic and cutie mark so she can find out what makes her special outside of magic.
I still don't see the issue people seem to have with the cutie marks and what they mean. They've stated that they appear at a moment of revelation, when one realizes their purpose/role/talent. The seeming contradictions, seen here in Trouble Shoes and later in Diamond Tiara, occur when that purpose/role/talent doesn't *seem* to mesh with reality. The ensuing emotional turmoil then reinforces this perception.
i agree. i think troubleshoes got his mark because he felt happy with performing then when he saw his mark he got distracted which screwed him up and basically ruined the moment and his perception of the event.him becoming a rodeo clown just goes along with performing. maybe a cutie mark can give an overall idea of one's talent/purpose/role but oesnt give the exact details of how to achieve that in life. maybe troubleshoes cutie mark just represented his feeling like he should perform at the rodeo in some way.
It's because every other cutie mark we've seen has been earned when the pony is doing or realizing their purpose. But Trouble Shoes was performing well when his cutie mark appeared. Imagine studying for a test only to get an F despite answering the questions correctly. Hence why he thought he was destined for misfortune. Had he been doing the routine and messed up and gotten it while the judges were laughing, his misinterpretation would have made more sense. But as it happened, it was like his cutie mark screwed him over.
The only thing I could ever focus on with this episode was that it seemed to be rehashing the lesson for AJ from Bridle Gossip; as once again she's jumping to conclusions about someone based on the prejudices of others, just dismissing her little sister when she stresses points about that someone that contradict, and misinterprets what happens to said little sister when she tries to take matters into her own hands because AJ won't listen.
I think this episode was to foreshadow what the CMCs cutie marks were going to be remember they don't just help people get there cutie marks but help understand what they mean
Great video! This is only the second video where you come out unharmed. HOW ARE YOU STILL BREATHING?? If you joined the army, you'd be unstoppable. No one could kill you! ;)
Am I the only one who shouted; "YES!" When he mentioned spontaneous combustion in wet bales? Come to think about It, there are a lot of things in mlp that depict farming in a completely unrealistic way. Maybe I should make a video about it.
Thank You so much Silver Quill! Not many people would make an other video for the people who can't see it because of their country. I'm an American German who lives in Germany for international schooling and it's great to see when content creators are considerate of their viewers worldwide. Thanks again!
Troubleshoes is not a pony. THAT is a HORSE. No wonder he has so much difficulty in a pony world! I makes me wonder about where he comes from, since there are no other "ponies" like him.
i missed these after the facts nice to see this 1 even if it is slightly different the original 1 you did. now all you have to do to make most people happy is at least finish of season 5. :)
Well, I think the ending makes some sense. It's kind of like Rarity's cutey mark. (I have no idea how to spell that.) Rarity's talent is locating gems, something that requires hard work and getting dirty, which she actually hates, but she uses her talent depicted by her cutey mark for something she loves - designing clothes. For lack of a better way of describing it without sounding, disturbing, or like i enjoy other's pain, Troubleshoe's "talent" is being clumsy, something he too doesn't care for, but the crusaders found a way for him to use his talent for something he does love - the rodeo. If there's a way to combine what you're good at and what you love, why not go for it? Although, you're right. They could have done a better reveal than Applebloom seeing him in pain and deciding he should do that for other's amusement. Maybe if he was just clumsy, but didn't get hurt or so depressed.
MLP-Silver-Quill everyone here will hear your german, so....... and: best regards from Shiggy312 (that was the guy who wanted to translate your ''a princess tears'' into german, he is a friend of me :)
I thought the carriages and dances joke were hysterical, as well as the harmonica joke. Honestly, every time they're in Appleoosa, the setting jokes are better than any other location
This goes out to all of the brony fandom and reviewers. You are all awesome and at what you do from art, animations, to reviewing or what ever else there is. Its just amazing to know what a great show like this does for so many people myself included. I personly wish I could go to brony con to meet any of you who are all so amazing and funny. just thank you for all your hard work and efforts you are all spectacular and always watching. love to you all. You make me smile. :)
I think when he first uploaded it, it got blocked in Germany, so he replaced the song in the end credits. Perhaps the TH-cam robot struck his first one again and blocked it worldwide. Am I close?
Great song choice in the beginning. For me, Troubleshoes symbolises the misinterpretation or misunderstanding of one's destiny. Many of us probably go through life thinking that there is only one way to live - myself included. Sometimes only when certain people or circumstances open our eyes to new opportunities, and in time, things get better - much better. This episode is actually one of my favourites as it indeed broadened the spectrum of #CutieMarkMagic and more. Thanks for the reminder /)
Ah Appleoosa's Most Wanted. The one episode I actually wish had never aired. Not only because it was not a great episode. Not only because it took everything we know about cutie marks and turned them on their head. Not only because it eventually became the most forgettable episode... But because... It made my most favorite Brony analyst quit. Sure he quit for a very stupid reason but gosh do I still miss his insightful and sometimes thought provoking videos. Heck, he seems to have gone silent all together now. Not even with non-pony stuff has he been around to make videos. It really is too bad. Here's to hoping he might somehow, someday return.
We didn't know much of anything about cutie marks. Aside from the fact that they appear when a pony discovers their special talent. There are the ties to 'destiny' in previous episodes like Magical Mystery Cure and Cutie Mark Chronicles. But, not only were those examples more so involving the Mane 6's special connection to the Elements of Harmony and each other, but this episode doesn't really contradict that, at all. For some reason, everyone assumes that everypony's cutie mark works exactly the same as the Mane 6's. When, that is clearly not the case. This just presents the new possibility that a pony can get a cutie mark that they don't like. That a pony may find that they are good at something that they'd rather not be. Not necessarily that they don't know who they are. Or anything involving identity. Aside from maybe the physical appearance. Not everyone is completely happy with what they are capable of. It's more of a mindset issue, than an issue with the talent itself. That being said, Troubleshoes's clumsiness being his talent is a rather odd narrative choice that doesn't really work for a story like this. Because, it is a trait that doesn't really seem to be something that any person like Troubleshoes could use in any way that doesn't involve them just embarrassing themselves. He didn't seem like the kind of person that would ever be okay with that, no matter the circumstance. The writers took the contrived route, and just made it so that he was okay with it just because he was in the rodeo. As if being a rodeo clown was the reason why he got the mark at the moment he was there, when the mark doesn't mean that. Just very contrived. It just doesn't fit as well as say, maybe him being so big and strong that he got a cutie mark for it. But, was having a hard time not hurting others with his strength and physique, so he hated his talent and was shunned for it. And, then the Cutie Mark Crusaders help him find that he could use his hard to control strength for a useful reason. Like, say, demolishing old buildings or something. Just an example of how this episode could've been less confusing. And why this episode's problem is more of the set up than it is the canon. It also doesn't necessarily seem that a pony's talent is always realized when they find the role to fit it in. Troubleshoes got his mark because he was clumsy while he tried to rodeo in front of a crowd. It doesn't really tell him much other than that he has a talent for being clumsy. People tend to get these things mixed up in real life, as well. Thinking that someone's mistakes or random actions are all there is to go off of when judging a person's capabilities. Or that a disorder or handicap is all there is to what a person is capable of. What you see or feel isn't necessarily everything. I feel like the only thing in the show that does sort of give us the impression that a cutie mark is more than a talent is really just Cheerilee's explanation when we first learned about them. She says that she realized what she wanted to do when she woke up one day, and saw her cutie mark. As if the mark instilled the talent in her mind. And, that her life would be driven by that. That in itself was rather strange. As if the cutie marks will just make a pony think and feel what needs to be done when the time comes. Which is sort of contradictory to what happens in Cutie Mark Chronicles, later on. The Mane 6 don't just randomly get their marks and know just what to do. They get into certain situations that give them a revelation. Even if they were special in that they were connected to each other and the Elements of Harmony. There was more of a rhyme and reason as to how the cutie marks are determined for a pony. I feel like that's more of a shortcoming of the writing in that scene of 'Call of the Cutie' than anything else. Since Cutie Mark Chronicles is a season 1 episode that tells that lore in more detail, and is what the writers stuck to more consistently. Aside from the aspect of the Mane 6's cutie marks really seeming to be a special case, when it comes to the dramatic 'destiny' of Equestria. But, that is a whole other topic on its own.
Thanks for make this video for the non-American viewers. I love the reviews you make. I can't wait to see your point of view on episodes 8 and 9 of MLP ^_^
Fun fact if you get hay wet a horse or a horse shorter than 1.40 cm (from bottom to where the mane stars) also called a pony or a pony race which is not just shorter but built different than the horse, will also not be able to eat wet hay whiteout major health risks involved
I thank you in the name of my people, Silver Quill, your name shall never be forgotten, as the heroic youtuber who defi... dafi... defe... has beaten the youtube copyright system.
So..... is this episode a bit of foreshadow about the Cutie Mark Crusaders future Cutie Marks? Did the show creators have it planned out this far in advanced?
troubleshoe's situation is not really seen again on the show. he is the only example of someone not realising what thier cutiemark meant. perhaps it can be put down as an anomaly. As harsh as it sounds it could be some sort of defect that made the mark appear early. After all it isn't really seen again throughout the show. It could also explain the more unusual body type.
I rewatched Appleoosa's Most Wanted (idk why I just did) but after that I realised that the wrighters were actually already planing the cmc's cutie marks, when they got their cutie marks they knew they were supposed to help ponies find the meaning of thier cutie marks or get a cutie mark , after rewatching this episode I noticed something, when Trobleshoes told his cutie mark story to the cmc they knew right away what it meant. Once they figured that out the made a plan and put it in action, once that plan almost failed they had an explanation for why he was innocent and what his cutie mark meant but they did this with no problem at all almost like they had a talent for it. This is really long and I'm sorry for that I just wanted to put in my input I can't really do reviews because I don't have the right equipment like a mic I only hav a headset with a mic and I don't have a pony oc and I don't have the right programs and it would be hard to do reviews when I'd be so far behind so I did this comment instead.
0:23 whoa. Easy there, Silver. We're still unclear on whether or not those 2 are actually related by blood, so let's leave THAT ship out of it for the time being
Where did that footage at 0:08 come from? I only remember Rainbow Power being used in two instances in the show, when Tirek attacked and in Luna's nightmare.
Well here's how I personally understand it: A cutie mark is a symbol of a talent/skill that is a key part of who you are & how you can contribute to the world. This can range from motivating others in a general sense to having a certain set skills in one particular field. (Which actually might explain shinging armor's mark. Sheild spells because he wants to protect what is dearest to him.) Does it mean you'll be happy with the end result? Well in troubleshoes case? Not really or you may have misunderstood it's potential. Does it mean you can't do something else? Again, not really. I mean thunderlane got his cutie mark and became a wonderbolt but he still enjoys cooking. Mrs. Cake has cupcakes for hers but she does all kinds of baked goods & sells them.
+Tugstes Bronwin It's an unwritten rule in American literature that all words ending with "e" automatically means the "e" gets ignored in class, bullied at lunch time, and tossed into hideous middle school bathroom stalls.
Ever since someone wrote a comment somewhere that Troubleshoes might actually have had a MUCH better life if he had lived in Starlight's Equalist town I really really want these two to meet. TS may be happy as a clown right now, but he still has to deal with every day life. I want to see Starlight conflicted when asked to use that evil spell again.
Am I the only one who may have noticed a slight inconsistency. Didn't Braveburn state in Over a barrel Appleusa was one year old? So in Troubleshoes's flashback where the heck was he? Unless Ponies age super quicker than ponies in the real word, that can't be Appleusa. Sorry if this sounds like nitpicking but it leaves me scratching my head in confusion. Also just to be fair well done, Applejack in 8:01
when its 12 at night you have school at 7 and your phone broke and now your on your computer/tablet scared to death because your phone broke and your typing (my life right now)
I think you've misunderstood his new role just a tad, the job of a rodeo clown is actually an extremely high risk occupation which involves risking your life to draw the attention of the bull and keep the rider safe when he falls off. not sure how that translates to equestria though, and honestly they don't receive as much respect as they deserve, but it's a bit more complicated then just "being laughed at". He's basically using his ability to suffer, or more accurately endure misfortune so that the others don't have to.
The first time I saw this episode, I thought Trouble Shoes was a little too big to be called a pony. For his size alone, I'd be willing to say he's a HORSE instead of pony since ponies are often smaller than horses. With that said, I'm sure Equestria includes a race of horses in addition to ponies.
From 0:18 to 0:33 - *TAKE THE ZEBRA!!!* 6:23 - Sir Terry Pratchett was a god among authors! Has there ever been a MLP character based on him, and if not, WHY NOT??? 8:31 - I see what you're saying, but what Trouble Shoes wanted most was to be involved inthe rodeo. Being a rodeo clown maybe not have been his original dream but it's a reasonable second choice. BTW, how exactly do three flowers indicate that Cheerilee(sp?) is meant to teach?
not even a Silver-quilted! *sigh* oh well this just means that the next AtF will be even better. So I heard you know about Terry Pratchett, so I want to know your favorite out if this works.
I'm still hoping for a _Blazing Saddles_ homage episode, set in Appleloosa. Kid-friendly, of course. ;) Oh wait, no. That was pretty much _Over a Barrel_, wasn't it?
I think a cutey mark's description on what it means to a pony wouldn't be same to others . I believe this since we all come from different back grounds. I at my age at least know what I'm most likely gonna do with my life with my talents . Being art or writing an others my age also know their talents but not what to do with them. But some aspects of makes it confusing on who we should be like my family . they think because I coo and aw at babies they think I must want to have kids . but I really don't but that's what I think.
This episode not only provides much needed character development for Braburn showing he not only loves and is proud of his cousin but in addition to being a pretty boy he's rough and tumble enough to get hurt, also he's a little irresponsible also it shows the cmc's finding their calling before the episode they get their marks without it it would have seemed contrived when it happened and it shows they actually did discover their talent rather then the delusion they had that they needed to earn it. My only problem was when someone said troubleshoes "sabotaged the steer pen" steer are castrated bulls, why in the hell would ponies have steer it's something that's only done because it makes their meat taste slightly better; why would a species that doesn't eat meat castrate bulls that not only makes their live a nightmare but it takes away their ability to breed with cows something they need to do for cows to not only to continue their species but make any milk. Being it's been established ponies drink milk they wold be shooting themselves in their hooves by castrating bulls.
Well, now people are going to ship breaquill.
....DARN SHIPPERS I lose. Lol... I'm a ship lover too. Though I don't ship often... I always seem to get it right
HECK yes we will SHIPS 4EVER!!!!!!
It's a lot easier to find Silver Quill's injuries funny than Trouble Shoes', because when Silver gets hurt, it's because he typically deserves it.
Agreed! We can watch me get pummeled because I got it coming!
According to "Great Scott, This Is Heavy" COCO POMMEL was once part of a mob that tried to do away with him!
Guys, read the description. It says why it was reoploaded
"The old video became muted thanks to TH-cam's copyright compliance bots."
The whole thing with marks defining what they do and not who they are coincides with PerfectBlue97's comic Without Magic, where Princess Celestia took away Twilight's horn/magic and cutie mark so she can find out what makes her special outside of magic.
I didn't knew about hay and getting it wet could do that😕😕😕. You learn something new everyday thanks for the education Silver Quill.
I still don't see the issue people seem to have with the cutie marks and what they mean. They've stated that they appear at a moment of revelation, when one realizes their purpose/role/talent. Throwing horse shoes, is enjoyment... or it should be.. it's not that fun. but maybe it just meant he supposed to entertain.
3:12 never throw torches unless if it's a mob scene.
Silver went a whole video without being injured, that's a academy record
Apparantly, to Quill 'crazy' equals 'Applecest,' and I do not blame him in the slightest.
5:17 Can confirm this fact, but there's more to the circumstances needed for that to happen.

Oh.
starlight glimmer was added to the "her" shipping gag
***** No, I recall seeing Starlight in the original gag as well.
Copyrighted audio
The part where Silver watches physical abuse instead of being part of it is new, I think.
Tim C No, that was in the original version of the video too.
Sooo what's alternate about this reupload, Silver?
I think when he first uploaded it, it got blocked in Germany, so he replaced the song in the end credits. Perhaps the TH-cam robot struck his first one again and blocked it worldwide. Am I close?

No, she was there to begin with.
The outro music was changed.
He mentioned it in the description.
The video was muted due to some "offensive music"

Not quite as horrible as Mare-do-Well IMHO
And who is this analyst? |:,'
Pretty sure ShadowBrony's talking about Tommy Oliver aka BronyCurious. I saw that video too.
Tommy Oliver I think? He looks to have taken down the "I quit" video rant, and has done some stuff since, but he quit right around here I think.

Same for me!
thx silver, for uploading a other version^^

So..... is this episode a bit of foreshadow about the Cutie Mark Crusaders future Cutie Marks?
I ship the Galleon with the Ironclad.
I also ship the Brig with the Schooner.
But what of the submarine? Won't someone think of the lonely submarine?
Great episode cant wait for your thoughts on the 100th episode.
0:23 whoa. Easy there, Silver. We're still unclear on whether or not those 2 are actually related by blood, so let's leave THAT ship out of it for the time being
0:12 - 0:15 And I'm going to assume Big Macintosh and Soarin' are the other two, am I right?
Where did that footage at 0:08 come from? I only remember Rainbow Power being used in two instances in the show, when Tirek attacked and in Luna's nightmare.
It's when they're returning the magic that Tirek stole.
Yeah, I'm just sort of assuming Brae suffered an undiagnosed concussion in his hay-stacking accident.
well you finally did it, you finally reviewed the episode that made tommy oliver quit the Fandom
quite?
+Tugstes Bronwin It's an unwritten rule in American literature that all words ending with "e" automatically means the "e" gets ignored in class, bullied at lunch time, and tossed into hideous middle school bathroom stalls.
...who?
You must be new.
Why did he quit because of this episode?
what...wait... Silver was not getting hurt in this review... what a heresy!!!
6:21 IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIH ! Terry Pratchett !
I was like how can I watch this and I found this so yay
Wait a moment... not a new feature for "Castle la Quill"?
7:05-Hey Silver Not The Hedgehog Quill, how're those Selfies With Satan coming along eh?
The first time I saw this episode, I thought Trouble Shoes was a little too big to be called a pony. For his size alone, I'd be willing to say he's a HORSE instead of pony since ponies are often smaller than horses. With that said, I'm sure Equestria includes a race of horses in addition to ponies.
I’ll have to find a time when I can use the phrase “By the power invested in me by absolutely nobody”
I appreciate the alternative. Apparently Canada takes issue with the original as well.
Im in Britain, not Germany, and yet this is the version I've had to access.
is been a year and just now I look to the link
OoO by the way I'm from Iraq>:-(
From 0:18 to 0:33 - *TAKE THE ZEBRA!!!*
6:23 - Sir Terry Pratchett was a god among authors! Has there ever been a MLP character based on him, and if not, WHY NOT???
8:31 - I see what you're saying, but what Trouble Shoes wanted most was to be involved inthe rodeo. Being a rodeo clown maybe not have been his original dream but it's a reasonable second choice.
BTW, how exactly do three flowers indicate that Cheerilee(sp?) is meant to teach?
hey silver have you ever done a review of a Canterlot Wedding and if so can you send me a link to that review
I thought critics were a little harsh on Braeburn. If you look outside the window, it's been several hours since he started watching them.
GROGAR! Though, I still wish his design had his bells since those are where he drew his power from.
can u make a vid on the ep where the cmc got there cutie marks
Thanks Denmark was also blocked
not even a Silver-quilted! *sigh* oh well this just means that the next AtF will be even better. So I heard you know about Terry Pratchett, so I want to know your favorite out if this works.
0:40 LOL, I made a blog on illogical yet oddly popular ships over on Amino and Brayburn X Soarin' is one of 'em.
I'm still hoping for a _Blazing Saddles_ homage episode, set in Appleloosa. Kid-friendly, of course. ;)
Oh wait, no. That was pretty much _Over a Barrel_, wasn't it?
You forgot to include Applejack and Applebloom in that beginning line-up...
Likely not included because then it would be Kissing Cousins.
TravellingStoryteller Exactly :P
@@JonathonWilder
In the Doctor Who fandom there've been people who shipped Jenny (the Doctor's daughter) with Susan. Susan, her NIECE!
I still maintain Braeburn did his job... he fell asleep at NIGHTfall. He watched them all day.
I'm in Asia right now and the other one did not work...
SilverQuill, RUN FOR THE HILLS!
Y'know, I've only really seen braeburn in one fic, with Daring Do, and it wasn't excactly a ship, more of an adventure story. (Wild west themed.)
I want to see that!
peacevic
Found it.
www.fimfiction.net/story/20108/treasure-in-the-west
Fimfiction's character based search engine made this very easy.
Bill lupin Oh, sorry, I meant animated.
peacevic
Ah. No, they won't be animating that story. MLP has no rifles.
Silver can ship anything.
I guess since I haven't watched this one in a long time, I noticed no differences. I think Brey burn got shipped more, and I noticed starlight.
Starlight was in the first one. The music was changed.
Thank you *so much* for this version! I was afraid I would need to search for a proxy.
GEMA is too greedy...
Thanxs mexico was blocked too
3:32 Braeburn " This rodeo with some porn of Apple loosa"
4:35-4:46
And the non kid friendly version is blood and gore like in a Saw movie. LOL
Or something involving Jesús Pezuña or ToonKriticY2K.
