    When buying a new GPU, you have the choice of grabbing a reference spec card or something more exotic from an AIB which will generally command a slight premium, but is the extra cost worth it?

    I have had the 7900XTX Nitro+ for about 2 months now and honestly I'm blown away by how capable it is, the extra money should be an investment on the comfort and extra headroom you get with this card over reference, not that reference is a bad card in it's own right.

      @E~Kayn yeah, depends on the case layout though, I was using the glass panel on my NR200P Max and it regularly got to 80°C, but glass blocks sound so it couldn't be heard, mesh panel brings temps down to about 64°C. 58°C when undervolted to 1080mV. So the fans barely spin.

    When I realized that my 10GB 3080 will be limited by VRAM before its architecture I started looking at AMD. I get it, Nvidia does it to segment their gaming and enterprise business, makes sense. Know what else it does? Makes we want to buy AMD. Two new 7000 series GPUs, one with 20GB and the other with 24GB. Less expensive too. Yes DLSS and Ray Tracing are nice features but I like to brute force my graphics more often than not and this 7900xtx can do it for less money. Well done AMD.

    Very nice video. Bit late yet early and still late to the party because I did the silly thing of jumping on a reference card and currently can't quite tell if it has at least part of the overheating problem or is just that poorly designed in terms of heat (and the noise it makes along with it). It's holding up for now but I don't see this lasting and already have the switch to Sapphire lined up. Side note: I am definitely not going ASUS again even if it's just ordering a product from them and they didn't even have to fry my 7600x for it.

      If Ive had to guess Id say they probably cheaped out on the thermal pads and especially the paste. Ive seen people repasting it with thick good quality paste (some people swear on PTM7950) and got the temps down by like 15 degrees on the hotspot. Might be worth it, especially on the reference model.

  • @georges617
    @georges617 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    One thing's for sure: The design of the Nitro+ is just drop dead gorgeous.
    The prices here in Germany change almost daily, but you can often find a Nitro+ for under 1200€ every now and then. That would be roughly 100-120€ more expensive than decent alternatives from other manufacturers, but it's worth it, if you want it as a long term investment. And prices will keep dropping over the next weeks.
    I was thinking of getting a Nitro+ to replace my 3080, but even under the best circumstances, we're talking about an FPS increase of about 50% and only thanks to an increased power consumption of about 25% compared to the 3080. As such and as much as I am tempted to get that beautiful Nitro+, I think I'll just skip this generation and wait until late 2024, when the new generations get released.

    Right now the 7900 XTX Nitro+ is down to $1099 at NewEgg. Having owned a reference 7900XTX (which I sold) and a XFX Merc version (excellent card), I can without hesitation say that the extra $$ is very much worth it for better temps and less noise as well as higher OC headroom going with an aftermarket model. Although I think the Sapphire is the best 7900XTX available, the $200+ markup they were doing was silly and the XFX Merc was a vastly better buy. But thankfully demanding is going down and I think it will drift ever closer to the $1000 reference price in the coming months.

    Why couldn't you undervolt the reference I undervolted mine which gave me a bigger fps boost
    Also for an extra $400 price range might as well just go for the 4090 but if you can get all of them at msrp I think the sapphire would be the best pick from these

    9:22 why would a superior cooler allow the card to be undervolted? That would be due to the stability of that particular GPU, not the cooler.

    Now about a grand in GBP. But with the XT Pulse about 700 GBP, which is better value? If either can be considered value options... If someone gave me the XTX Nitro, I'd happily keep it, running it on the slower, cooler, more efficient BIOS, which is perhaps its best selling point - you get the amazing build, bags of performance, fair thermals and current draw.

    • @rENEGADE666JEDI

      the core temperature doesn't matter what matters is the junction temp. If you keep this temperature below 90c you are able to go down with the voltage much lower. Another thing is the game engine. For warzone I play on 3300mhz@1091v settings because the game likes high clock and in games on unreal engine 3000mhz@1075v. These modes are stable as long as junction temp is lower than 90. Of course, this applies to my card.

    How about a comparison of the Sapphire to the XFX Merc 7900 XTX? That should be a pretty close comparison. The XFX has been about $100 cheaper than the Sapphire. NewEgg recently had it for $1029 less a $50 off coupon. (Currently sitting at $1029) Seems like a better value as we approach the $999 retail of the reference cards.

    I was able to grab that sweet 24GB of VRAM packing XFX Merc 7900 XTX for just $949 on Amazon. Now, I just laugh when people say games are bad. I don't even know what they're talking about over here as everything (Yes, including "the terrible" TLOU P1) runs completely max'd out at 4k/60. Heck, TLOU looks better on my computer than the freaking TV show!! The Only game to challenge this mighty beast has beast in it and that game is Hogwarts Legacy. It uses over 17Gb of VRAM when maxed out at 4k and I ended up having to turn on FSR Quality and turn RT from Ultra to High at launch. I beat it within a few days of straight gaming so I'm not sure how much the game's RT optimizations helped after launch and for all I know that game too can now run Fully Maxed Out. Still, most of my games play at 120fps/4k maxed. I haven't OC'd it at all, but it stays around 2.85Gz while gaming, using between 300-400+ watts. Considering I didn't have to change out my PSU (as would have been the case for the nearly twice as expensive 4090) and it actually competes or even beats that card in some games, I'm a happy boy indeed!!
