I got to see Ralph Stanley play at the Bijou in Knoxville before he died. It was a huge honor to see the MAN in person.I even talked to him briefly. A real gentleman. I hate he is gone.
Kenneth Davis on lead vocals, James Alan Shelton on lead guitar. Both from Gate City VA area in Scott county. I played alot of music with them two. I played Ralph's Festival once. He actually did 2 original songs from a band I was in. On top of mount Zion, and One drop of water. Written by Cecile Church who I still see from time to time.
I guess that'll be "While The Ages Roll On" and "One Drop Of Water" on Ralph's 'While The Ages Roll On' CD from 2000 - what was the band you played with & did you record the songs? On the CD booklet both are misprinted as credited to Coielle Church. I guess they also retitled "On Top Of Mt Zion" as "While The Ages Roll On" as the BMI repertoire only lists the two titles you gave - thanks for the info!
@@BluegrassBuzzbomb the group was Mountain Melody from Castlewood,VA. Kelly B Chafin, Curt and Rosa Mae and Alan Hall and myself. We had cassettes. I need to get those transfered.
It boggles my mind every time I see somebody playing all those notes using the claw hammer technique. Whether it’s Dr. Stanley or grampa Jones it’s seems like magic.
GREAT Clawhammer Banjer almost best in the World and Fiddle so nice, very Special drive, clogging, how i wished to saw this excelent Artists!!! thanks Folks, from Swiss Clawhammer Grandpa
This is a rare configuration of the Clinch Mountain Boys that existed around 1994. The fiddler Art Stamper, who had recently replaced long time fiddler Curly Ray Cline, is gone now, the long time bass player Jack Cooke is gone now, and we lost the lead guitar picker James Alan Shelton in 2014. Ralph passed in 2016. Kenneth Davis was a great singer who had replaced Ernie Thacker, but left the band shortly after this was recorded, replaced by Ralph II.
Ralph learned clawhammer from his mother and kept playing it. When the Stanleys started, he played a two-finger style which he used on their first four recordings. Then he switched to three-finger. I once asked him if he still played that two-finger style. He told me he didn't and didn't even remember how he did it.
You are right on. My dad went to see the Stanleys during this time and had never before seen picks. Ralph graciously allowed dad to try but he put the finger pick on backwards. Of course when it hit the string it flew off and landed twenty feet away. Ralph was nice about the whole thing and my dad, who was a teenager at the time, of course never forgot this incident. He said he wanted to crawl into a hole. The end of the story is that after my dad learned the "secret" of finger picks (he'd listen on the radio but couldn't figure out how Ralph got that sound) he went on to be a very good three-finger style banjo player, heavily influenced by Ralph but also Scruggs as well.
I'm not sure what you mean, cause Ralph toured right up until the last year of his life. You can find videos of performances post 2010 all over TH-cam.
It's from 1994 - Kenneth Davis was lead singer for about a year, but only recorded with Ralph on the Ralph Stanley / Joe Isaacs gospel CD (and the CMB's Reunion 2xCD / DVD).
@Sparrowhawk155 Negative. I'm not sure who's singing lead here, but it's not Ernie T. In my humble opinion the best versions of this song feature Charlie Sizemore on lead.
We sure do miss Dr. Rath Stanley. He has a voice like no other know that he’s in heaven looking down on us. We miss you, Ralph.
He'll always be with us. legend.

Fine lead singer. Take note the pro sideman Art Stamper. Great fiddler! Ralph was still in good health then. May he Rest In Peace.

It boggles my mind every time I see somebody playing all those notes using the claw hammer technique. Whether it’s Dr. Stanley or grampa Jones it’s seems like magic.
Note the great Kentucky fiddler the late Art Stamper. Worked the green room one year at IBMA and had the pleasure to talk and listen to Art 1 to 1
Always a joy to hear Ralph Stanley ...some great harmony and fiddle ♡♡♡ here's to the bluegrass soul =)

Claw hammer ripping so fast you can hear it, but you can't see it......never tire of watching this great legacy clip.
Wish Ralph would have thrown in a little RED BIRD in to I love his version! Would have loved to see him play it!
Red Bird hadn't even been written as this point.

Classic ralph.
I'd give $10000 if I could play or dance like Art Stamper.

Wish Dr.Ralph could have played with Michael Cleveland
Shout lil Lulie 2:42

hi like are music videos
Great show, but for something recorded in 2010, the video quality is horrible. Looks like something recorded on VHS 30 years ago.
That was recorded way before 2010. Ralph stopped playing long before that.

Hi Dennis - I'll send you an email! Cheers, Ivor.

@danbolub yes it is in double C
Other than that damn fiddle player with the black hat, great stuff.
Stamps was great.
is that Ernie Thacker singing Lead?
No, Kenneth Davis.
what tuning is this (double C)?
@Sparrowhawk155 Negative. I'm not sure who's singing lead here, but it's not Ernie T. In my humble opinion the best versions of this song feature Charlie Sizemore on lead.
Ralph knew how to shake the lead singers out of the trees for sure.
Who is the fiddle player?
Art Stamper
