    For those late to the party, 4 years after this video was made, Noctua partnered with a graphics cards manufacturer to make a Noctua-flavoured graphics card. As you probably guessed, from Linus' results, it apparently works great!

  • @FriendlyFather
    @FriendlyFather 6 ปีที่แล้ว +156

    The problem with why the blower-style wasn't working, was probably because you didn't seal off the old intake on the graphics-card. This way, most of the air escaped in to the case (due to less resistance), rather than through the fins, and out of the case.

    • @or2kr
      @or2kr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You probably mean the "exhaust" on the right of the blower fan. Since the blower fan is inside the card and it's output is instantly divided by the card (one side being the fins, the other side being the exhaust back in the case), it will approximately put the same amount of air through both paths. The axial fan however was mounted above the blower fan, so the whole amount of airflow (to some extent) can go through one path if the other one is sealed off (thats what wasn't achieved and also that what you said what should've been achieved).
      Since the path back into the case provides way less resistance than the path through the fins and through the slot bracket, most of the air indeed doesn't go through the fins.
      To solve that issue, one could:
      1. tape the right side off of the gpu
      2. buy a blower fan (not searching for "gpu fan" is pretty important in that case) and directly replace the broken one
      3. create a duct under the axial fan where the old fan was to guide some air back into the case (if there are components there)
      4. break off the casing of an axial fan and place the axial fan there where the old fan was, it will now work kinda like the blower fan it replaces
      This is in no way meant as critique, I just had the urge to add more context and suggestions :P

    • @ASSOpid
      @ASSOpid 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It didn't work because the fan in the blower style is designed as a whole system. The shroud, heatsink, exhaust. It's designed to suck air from the front of the shroud, thru the heatsink and exhaust it out the back of the shroud/PC. It might have worked better if he mounted the fan somehow to the back or front and taped off the stock fan so air couldn't escape forcing air thru the heatsink.

      I did that with my HD7950 because the Gigabyte fans stopped spinning below 1000RPM and that is really loud.
      I also did this mod to my (back then) brand new XFX GTR RX480. The temps and noise are amazing. The only downside is I have to use SpeedFan to control the fan RPM based on GPU temperatures.
      These new Asus Strix cards have really usefull 4pin headers meant for case fans. I would recommend using those.

      But as the Nvidia reference cards do exhaust a small amount of the air back into the case through the smaller heatsink on the "right" (when looked at from above) side, and this has way less resistance then the big other fin-stack i guess, the air will just go this side i think

    The reason that the Titan fan mod didnt work is actually quite simple. The OEM fan is designed to suck air into the card and launch it paralell to the internal fin array, but your mod blows aitr into the shroud rather than propelling the air directly onto the fins, reducing static pressure "& efficiency dramatically.

    • @em0_tion
      @em0_tion 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Axel Shark The card's cooling is designed with the radial fan in mind, so yeah, those crappy results were as expected ;D Meanwhile both type of fans are easy to find in ebay and aliexpress and they are affordable. (Sadly) not really surprised to see this type of shotty work from Linus. He seems more focused on quickly making the videos, golden eggs sponsors in mind, while tossing the content's quality in the background. You can even see it in his workers' eyes. As an ex-smoker, pretty much ALL my GPU fans failed before I was done using the card. Having had no outside input, I came up with this solution on my own about 15-20 years ago. General rules: strip the card down to the bare heatsink and zip tie a case fan directory onto the heatsink. Never try to power the fan through the card. Don't zip it so tight that it warps the fan's casing and ensure the blades are not rubbing on anything and that's about it! Not even sure how I came across this video today but it's refreshing to see that this solution is touted by the the man himself! Great tip Linus, thumbs up from me!! Bonus info - I'm Canadian!!

      @IchRockeInDerDisco 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Delta is indeed a very good brand, it is used in many electrical control cabinets, but you have to be careful choosing the right ones, some are waaaay to powerful for a PC even if they are standard 80/92/120mm. Noctua is a good no brainer in this case (and in many Pc related cases.)

    • @SzDavidHUN
      @SzDavidHUN 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it's good, thats why I recommended. Maybe one just started failing in my 2 year old laptop, but that another thing (crappy unrepairable screwless asus design, and it wasn't even the cheapest).
      I've seen some of them in youtube, I couldn't belive that they're that powerful. And they wasn't the "best" models. But as you see, the blower style cards need pressure, and you always can decrase the power of them (just a beefy enough controller neccesary, they can use some watts :D ) Soo probably a "not that high performance" fan would cool the graphics card better than that little fan that linus used.
      Maybe I'll just buy some OP fan, just to try it. If I can slow it down enough then I'll make a laptop and/or pc cooler from a few of it. Probably need more power than the computer. Checks ebay..
      120mm Delta fan 4.8A. THAT IS POWER!

      These fans are not particularly expensive, given that the marketing B2C value is close to 0 contrary to Noctua or Thermaltake, Noiseblockers (sigh ...) so the ratio cost/effectiveness is great, but then they are not designed or targeted at silent cooling. But you can always fiddle with them.
      I remember my amd athlon slot A cooling with two 4mm massive AlphaPal, that were thicker than noctuas ... Back then cooling wasn't such an extensive market and many manufacturers and resellers used these kind on industrial / semi industrial fans.
      Not an era I regret ... I'm an happy owner of Noctua fans and silent Fractal case :p

  • @AaronShenghao
    @AaronShenghao 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What you missed there is the blower style Graphic cards uses a Centrifucal fan compressor (aka laptop fans), which provides a lot of head pressure but less flow compreing to a axial fan (regular computer fans) which provides less head pressure but more flow. This is one of the reason water pump are almost always centrifucal while morden jet engines are mostly axial.

    Arctic Cooling has some pretty nice after market coolers for GPUs. I installed their smallest one like 4 years ago on a GTX 550 Ti (reference card by EVGA), which brought noise and temperatures down by a lot (67°C before at full fan speed, 45-50°C or something like that after and you couldn't even hear the fan at all even when turning it to 100%)

  • @HaiHane

    i'm wondering, why not solder the PWM signal to the gpu fan header and wire the other connectors to molex (or leave it as is, but just take one cable and rewire it to pwm on gpu card) for power. this way, the fans still ramp up ramp down based on actual GPU load, no?

    • @ademiravdic
      @ademiravdic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess they just kept noctua fans working on 100%. I have one as my case intake, and basically there is no sound difference between 50% and 100% speed. So i just keep it at max. :)

      or just cut the wires on the 4 pin plug .. leaving the pwm and rpm wires .. and cutting the power wires to wire them up to a molex or sata power plug then you can just plug the pwm plug into the card still without having to solder or modify it. ... but ... using a MB header is still just as easy and with a program like speedfan you can set it up to make a curve that is controlled by the GPU temp.
