I about died when you said you hadn't found any horn corals yet. Sooo many up there! Still watching as I type - hoping you end up finding some as the video goes on!

So awesome! We found a bunch of those gastropods in our video coming up on Sunday. We were on the Pecos River in Texas. They look very similar, but it definitely didn't have the variety you found here. So much fun you were having! We enjoyed this video very much as always! 😃😃

Wow thats an amazing road cut! When every rock you can pick up, contains that many fossils, you are in an amazing place! Those death plates are so amazing! I would definitely need a bigger bucket! Great video!

This area of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky really amazes me. So many roadcuts that are absolutely littered with amazing fossils.

Crazy, how you can just be driving down the road, completely unaware of the treasures surrounding you.

Thanks for this, very interesting to me. I have been fortunate enough to have been sent a selection of fossils from this site, though I doubt that I'll ever get to visit myself. Leptaena is one of my favourite genera and everyone loves Zygospira modesta. The corals you have are Grewingkia canadensis, I think and the gastropod is Paupospira. I spent ages working out which bryozoan was which in my samples. Great fun!

I love Indiana! Hoping to make a trip soon myself 👍🏼 The geology is very similar to Missouri. Same Ordovician fossils here and limestone bedrock. There’s bazillions of geodes in southern Indiana. The geodized fossils are super cool!

It's such a great state for rockhounding. I wish I would've had time to make it further west to the geode areas, but this was more so just part of a one day scouting trip through SE Indiana and northern Kentucky. I'm hoping to get back out this way later in the year.

Oh, and the round crinoid columnals with the petal pattern in the centre are Cincinnaticrinus and the ones with the square stems are Xenocrinus baeri.

Side note… I’ve noticed cedar trees LOVE limestone bedrock! We have tons of cedar trees in Missouri too. I dunno… I think that’s cool. I’ve noticed certain plants only grow on certain bedrock

Certain plants definitely only grow on certain bedrock/soils. It all boils down to chemistry which I think is super neat.

What you thought was a sponge or bryozoan was Coral call Proteria. It encrusted brachiopods.

Thank you! I couldn't quite figure it out with my fossil book, but I don't think I looked in the coral section.

10:50 ugh I know this! I’m not sure if I’m right I think it’s platyceres. I call them the poop snail. They lived on crinoids attached to the anal pore… 😂 poop snails! I’m sorry if the name is off. I can never remember it. They’re poop snails! 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

Why would you go fossil hunting without a rock hammer and a chisel?

  • @sandraabshire4923

Do you keep the plates as is or soak them in something to remove the limestone a bit or shine them somehow? Nice interesting finds. I went just once to Richmond IN and found very similar rocks. Fun!

    • @RockandRoadRockhounding

Currently I'm leaving them as is, but I think I might experiment with a couple types of acid

If you put paraloid on the brachiopods, they stand out nicely.

Beware our Indiana red state legislature is now fining folks for road cut collecting.
