Seles was an absolutely phenomenal tennis player. Not to diminish Graf's accomplishments, but although Graf had been on the tour since the early '80s and at the time of the stabbing had collected 11 singles grand slams, Seles within just a few short years had already amassed 8 singles grand slams. Still to this day no one in the open era has ever won as much and as fast as Seles did from the moment they turned professional. Although we will never know what could have been, one thing is for certain we were all robbed of a rivalry between the two that could have been similar to Evert and Navratilova.
If it ever happened it would've been by far the best woman's rivalry ever
Chris and martina's wouldn't even be in the same conversation
🎯
Steffie's achievements are a direct result of Seles stabbing. Monica Seles is statistically the greatest tennis player of all time.
Nope. Monica's father was diagnosed with terminal cancer several months after the Hamburg incident. That was enough to destroy her motivation.
Yes, she was. She had an unequaled fighting spirit, a very high intelligence of the game, a very good serve, a fabulous return, and ground strokes like no other. Her energy seemed limitless.
Monica was literally Steffi worst nightmare before the stabbing..
Seles only won the French in 1992 10-8 and she got only 3 games from Graf at Wimbledon, Graf won both their meetings in 1991 including when they played on clay. I’m a fan of both but Seles never dominated Graf , ever.
@@TheNathanj2009 you are just as lunatic as the dead stabber gunther parche to say seles never dominated graf, pre stabbing.
@@TheNathanj2009 I think we are talking slams here not two small tournaments in 91..Monica after rye 93 Aussie was dominating the game snd Graf 3-1 in slam finals
It was sooner Navratilova, with her serve-and-volley game.
@@JamesD-iw6pr Graf improved when she changed from the outdated Dunlop racket she was still using until the end of 1993, peak Graf was 94-96. If the stabbing hadn’t happened we could have watched a great rivalry unfortunately we will never know how good their matches may have been. Graf had a mid career slump 90-93. Imagine if they had faced off in Melbourne 94 when Graf had switched rackets? That would have been fascinating, instead Graf beat Sanchez 60 62….I believe Sanchez owns 3 of her 4 slams thanks to Gunter Parche!
Monica Seles was a great player and one of the very best.
She was also a nice person, bubbly, happy and gracious to her fans. I was reading abt Ted Tinling, who had a huge input on the women's tour, right to designing Evert's wedding dress, and BJK's dress in the match against Riggs. He was a great mentor, advisor and friend for 50 odd years to the women's game.
At his memorial service, Evert was one of the speakers, and abt 2 other players. 4 front row seats had been reserved in the church for all the women players they thought wd come, but none of them did, not even BJK. At the last moment, having just won the French Open a couple of weeks earlier, Seles battled through the press and photographers, and was the only player to show up, apart from the 3 mentioned above.

Steffi looks terrified of Monica in this final. 😂

@@joeyconvery2055 No wonder since Steffi had lost one of previous four matches against the grunter…
A truly classic final between two legendary players.
Both 🔥 too
My all of time favourite player: MONICA SELES. Forever..
Seles, while already an amazing player, was still improving and Graf’s form was higher than the previous 3 years. What a rivalry we missed out on. These two would’ve pushed each other to the limit.
It would have been a rivalry, certainly, but I think Seles had taken space in Graf's mind, and would have won their head to head, just as Navratilova overtook Evert's initial lead.
@@michelez715 are you so sure ?
@@michelez715 Nah, Graf's game improved. Her backhand was knocking Monica over at the 1999 French.
@@grafgoat monica wasnt the same player after the stabbing, her losing to aranxta after the stabbing is proof of that, she dominated aranxta before the stabbing
i dont agree with mathew. i dont think it would have been much of a rivalry, seles was leaving graf in the dust, and this match proved it.
the way Seles attacked Graf's backhand is something to admire.
Monica's power off both wings, which was unprecedented in Steffi's era! Graf's backhand was actually a real weakness! Seles would punish the backhand over and over with deep sharp angles, wait for a short reply, and then pound the ball down the line to Steffi's forehand.
@@jjsggg1465 Graf's backhand wasn't a weakness. Go watch the 1999 French semifinal. That backhand kept Monica on her back foot.
But still she lost in 10 of 15 matches against the German superstar, often terribly.
@@carrerau7138 tell the whole story though as head to head records never mean that much... monica was three years dominating the sport (except on grass|) and was 3-1 in slam finals against graf... in fact for those three years 90-93 graf was not even making finals so seles could beat her even more...the stabbing changed everything and too bad as it would have been great to see both these legends playing their best in their primes against each other but Monica was never as good when she came back and graf was getting near the end of her career.. this match here was the closest we got to seeing them at their physical prime, though monica was still improving ever 6 months as was graf... and the 10-5 record shows head to head will always favors the older player... 3 wins over seles when she was 15 and had no serve or forehand really or any strength at 100 pounds.. same dynamic with Martina N and graf head to head ( martina won a lot of the earlier encunters due to age)
@@bryguy0111 H2H always means a lot.
Seles was only dominant for 2 and not for 3 years. At the end of 1990 Steffi still had a bigger advantage in the WTA rankings than Seles ever had later.
That Steffi missed only 7 slam matches in the whole 1987-96 decade but that 5 of those misses happened between mid-1990 and 1992 tells the story.
Steffi was so bad during that time that she
a) missed many slam finals and
b) lost several even when she reached them.
The stabbing didn't change a lot.
A resurgent Steffi may have lost one of two slams she won during Seles's absence.
But she would have won Wimbledon 94 with Seles being in the draw.
Steffi still would have won 21-22 slams.
Seles may have won 12-14.
In the first 14 months after her return Seles was as good as she had been. Was 54-6 win/loss with 2 losses against peak Steffi. A 56-4 win/loss record would have meant exactly the same winning percentage as in her top year 1992.
Navratilova and Evert fans always tell me than that the H2H record always favors the younger player.
That shot of Seles at 7:18 is a reminiscent of Rafa Nadal's Forehand on the run. So, beautiful to watch this from Seles 🔥
I love you Monica!❤️
The double handed threat of Monica Seles can't be matched ...she was unstoppable..it was because of her and Andre that I picked up a racquet
Cheers 🥂
Gosh how heartbreaking to see what an amazing match this was before the stabbing. These two would have played thrillers and we never got to see it. Monica’s backhand crosscourt and down the line were devastating.
Seles was the best returner of second serves I ever saw, man or woman. She just crushed them.
Monica's father was diagnosed with terminal cancer several months after the Hamburg incident. A double blow for her motivation.... she was never the same again.
Graf was mentally stronger, even while facing prison time for tax evasion in Germany.
You cannot compare that.@@ivanford7313
@@ivanford7313 people put bad press because of a tax-evading wife-cheating father on the same level as being stabbed and finding out your father has cancer and draw conclusions. And at the same time make all sorts of excuses for Graf’s inability to regain the top for 2+ years.
@@ivanford7313 It was not a blow to her "motivation" Seles later revealed that the attack had caused her to suffer from depression, anxiety, a binge eating disorder and that she had experienced a profound loss of confidence in herself and her abilities.
6:26 Seles serving and volleying is the craziest thing ever.
Usually Seles lost to other players esp. Sabatini, Graf, Capriati Sanchez etc, in other tournaments, but when it comes to Slams she was of different breed- physically and mentality. Just Awesome to watch. Cheers!
Monica Seles was the Clear #1 at the time of stabbing (defending champ at 3 slams) and that Graf was a Clear #2 (W champ plus runner-up at AO and FO).
Seles was #1 and had been for 2 years before the stabbing. The stabbing of the #1 made the #2 the top player again! That crazed german fan got his wish!
"Clear #1"??
Seles had only a narrow lead in the WTA rankings just before the stabbing. With a win at the FO 93 Steffi would have regained her #1 ranking anyway.
So stop your lies, you sick hater.
Add to this that Seles had won the tour finals (YEC) three years in a row as well. At that point in time Monica had equaled or surpassed Steffi at all big tournaments except Wimbledon, while having played less than 5 full seasons on tour.
Nope.. Navratilova no. 2 defeated Steffi in Toray 1993
You could see how much Monica was still progressing, serve looked much stronger than it did a couple of years ago. Sadly because of the stabbing/time out of the game don’t think we can say for sure we ever saw her real peak (tho still incredible run from ‘90-93 winning 8 majors)
Mónika Szeles is my all-time favourite female player. She playing intelligence and unique style are by far outstanding. Unfortunately, she career was incomplete due to her knife attack.
You could see her also getting bigger and the frame of her body changing. It affected her mobility.
Karamazov93 totally agree. You can see that her game was still changing and progressing and getting stronger at the beginning of 93. I also don't believe that she had quite hit her peak yet, but then the stabbing changed all of that.
@@sandorkarolyi3255 By fan of Steffi Graf ! Don't forget his name : Gunter Prahe

Great tennis match from two legends , this is from the good old days, thanks a lot for posting this one, unfortunally the quality picture isn't that good, I believe it's a little compress, but anyhow, thanks a lot.
It’s interesting to watch the QF match this same year between Steffi and Capriati. Steffi completely controlled the points and the match was on her racket. When she faced Monica in this final, it was clearly Monica dictating a majority of the points and rallies.
Just hit it to her very weak backhand and wait for her to hit a short ball. Monica was able to do that.
Steffi Graf, greatest footwork and forehand in the history of the game.
What a shame that Seles' career was interrupted like it was. She was getting the better of Graf during this period. On a separate note, the celebrations at winning a slam like the AO were so much more subdued compared today. It's as if the AO was a normal WTA tournament by today's standards.
This match proves it all...! Monica❤
Thrilling finale, two stars 🌟 Facing each other women's tennis.
feels like I'm watching a Nadal Federer with the style of play from Seles (like Nadal) & Graf (like Federer). Monica & Steffi both legendary players...
For anyone questioning seles’ dominance she never lost defending her titles!! 90/91/92 FO 91/92/93 AO 91/92 US open and all before she turned 20 NO other player has defended 8 Slam wins.
That return of serve at 7:10 is extraordinary
Huge huge match from Seles. She won Steffi Graf in final. Who else could have done that? Nobody, i think. Moreover, one of the best tennis-matches i have ever seen.
I think Sabatini would have beaten Steffi that day as well.
@@carrerau7138 lol
No one. Graf was the second best player on tour and despite a losing streak vs Sabatini in 1991, at no point did she fall behind anyone else than Seles. And this was her 3rd slam final of the last 4 and she went on to win the next 4…
@@jujumusique1305 Yes, after the end of the Graf Blackmail Scandal in February 1992 Steffi improved constantly until April 1994 when her back problems started.

This tennis looks amazing, especially for the 90s. These women would've been huge danger on today's WTA tour
A impressão é que simplesmente a maior rival da graff simplesmente saiu de cena aos 19. Pelo que entendi não foi apenas facada e sim depressão também.
Gunter Parche robbed Seles but he also robbed us of potentially fantastic match ups such as a rematch of this in 1994 when Graf changed to a more modern racket. Graf looked close to unbeatable in Melbourne in 1994, Seles would have been her only proper competition. Same a US open of 1993, it would have been fascinating to see a match up there on a faster hardcourt. Also if Seles had played Wimbledon in 1994 she may have won it (if Graf is losing in round one to McNeil) what if… what if…

Cuanta calidad!

Monica Seles has the best attitude. She was able to raise her game when Steffi played well. That is why Seles of prime will be GOAT
What a fantastic rivalry! We were robbed of it by this horrendous stabbing. But I have to say, that I am annoyed by those people saying, Graf was dominated by Seles before. This is simply not true. They were evenly matched. Everything else is just make believe.
In terms of how much a player changed the sport, Seles is superior than Graf. Not only her 2-handed strokes was groundbreaking, her aggressiveness and the ability to change the direction of the ball were super impressive. Oh and her grunt which comparing to those after her was nothing, though she was really criticized for it.

I’m a great fan of Monica Seles. Her grunting and two handed styles is one of a kind. Sadly, the stabbing incident was the game changer of her career.
Seles is a warrior
Monica Seles is renowned for her use of a double-handed grip on both her forehand and backhand shots, a technique she employed for the majority of her shots. However, determining her dominant hand solely based on her gameplay can be challenging. Without observing her serve, it's difficult to definitively classify her as either left- or right-handed.
Seles was the most terrifying dream come true for the German
As #1 player the Yugo lost 5 of 7 matches against the German.
The worst H2h record of a #1 player against any opponent of all-time. A record that will stand until the end of time. Never was a #1 player dominated like this.
10:19 Seles created angles that wasn’t even there!
Monica was the best. Brought a whole new game to womens tennis and the grunting is'nt at all bad compared to players these days. If not for the stabbing, i think she would have been one of the GOATS, if not THE GOAT

SELES GOAT. I'M SURE.
Just like grass was Steffi's best surface to play Monica, I think the Rebound Ace was Monica's best surface to play Steffi. It really suited the Boletierri style power baseline game. Agassi, Courier and Pierce all also had great results on it. It was a bit slower than the hard courts at the US Open and the ball sat up, making it easier to whack. Among the wider tour though it was not popular. When it was hot it melted and got dangerous resulting in a number of high profile injuries. Martina Navratilova said it was one of the reasons she stopped playing the Australian open after 1989 (she mentioned how she burnt her knee on it once getting down low for a volley). Interestingly, she said that when the tournament was moved from Kooyong they consulted the players about which surface they wanted. The players said they didn't want Rebound Ace but were ignored. Monica is the best female tennis player I have seen. She won 8 grand slams by the age of 18 and had the power and mental toughness nobody else could match. Had she not been stabbed she likely ends up with at least 20 grand slams if not more while Graf ends her career around 15 total grand slams. Its sad for Monica and all her fans that we missed out on so many other great grand slam events from 1993 on.
Seles won only 7 slams until age 18.
She was mentally weak, wasn't able to play for more than 2 years because of a minor stab wound.
It is asinine to think Steffi would have won 7 slams less since Steffi even won most of her matches against #1 Seles pre-stabbing. You are just one of those sad Selestial losers who can't accept that Steffi Graf simply was a better player.
Not regarded as one of their very best matches. Monica starting off slowly and a little nervously. Steffi in the kind of slightly patchy "winning ugly" form that she had been throughout the tournament. When Monica found her form, Steffi couldn't find a higher gear.

@@yussepig6629 She was visibly getting fatter from 1991 to 1993.
And that continued until 1998.
Monica Seles to me, remains the greatest talent of all women players.
Both were great champions who collided occasionally, but at this point in her career Monica's belief in her own game was indomitable. Graf played good tennis in this match and stretched Seles, but you sensed Monica wasn't afraid of upping the ante when the going got tough. Her most ferocious hitting was when it was close whereas Graf seemed to have slightly more doubts in herself at this time. The stabbing changed that. We'll never know what twists and turns there would have been to their rivalry had that event not occurred. I do think they could have eclipsed Chris and Martina, though, with the added dimension that they didn't have a particularly warm personal relationship. Professional respect was about as far as it went.
Well 3 months later she gets stabbed and her life changes forever.😢
Wonder why they didn’t show any of Monica’s aces she had 8 in this match anyway great highlights and Great match from both.
You can see Monica's weight was becoming an issue.
Delusional Lying Graf fan! 😂Please explain to everyone how #2 Graf really got back to the TOP in 1993!😂
@@jjsggg1465 Because she practiced! She trained! She improved her game. Steffi Graf was never out of shape or out of breath. How do you explain that? You Selestials are delusional. Monica loved butter and didn't practice as much as her peers. It's documented.
@@jjsggg1465 Monica put butter on everything. Go look it up. Sorry to burst your bubble.
@@jjsggg1465 Wimbledon 1992 also helped though we know you Selestials like to block it out.
@@jjsggg1465
Steffi got back to the top because she made ALL slam finals in 1993 like she did in 1987-89 and 1995/96.
Whereas she missed MOST slam finals in 1991/92.
seles would have continued kicking graf's ass if not for that horrific stabbing....on court! that that german nationalist psycho actually succeeded in getting graf back to number 1 is one of the sickest and saddest of sport's history
What a PINT to WIN CHAMPIONSHIP!!! Like DJOKOVIĆ does it!! Well, HOW MANY GS WOULD be in her collection, if she would NOT be PREVENTED in HORABLE way!?? TO MANY, would be the most precise answer!!!
Peak Seles > Peak Graf
Peak Seles in 1991/92:
144-11 win/loss, 20 titles, 6 slams, 1-3 win/loss vs. main rival (Steffi)
Peak Steffi in 1988/89:
159-5 win/loss, 25 titles, 7 slams & Olympic gold, 4-0 win/loss vs. main rival (Navratilova)
It is not even close, you clown.
Steffi is nothing in front of seles before stabbed...
Steffi was 3-2 win/loss against #1 Seles pre-stabbing.
That is far more than "nothing", you maroon.
Better rivalries back in the day, for sure.
Che giocatrice fenomenale la Seles....
This stabbing story is just awful, we could have had a great rivalry, it should have been the Federer Nadal of the 90’s, the Navratilova/ Evert of the 90’s such a shame… Two amazing players with a contrasting game which was a match made in heaven for some amazing matches…
Seles was away only for a little bit more than 2 years.
So we missed maybe 6 or 7 matches between them.
There was never another Alvis and there will never be another Seles
People talk as if Monica would have surpassed Steffis achievements har she not been stabbed. She was playing well against Graf due to her youth .
Seles did SURPASS Gtaf and became#1. That was of course until she has brutally attacked by a fan of Graf!
@@jjsggg1465 Never had a winning record against Graf and in fact the last 5 matches before Monica was stabbed Graf had a 3-2 advantage. Monica wasn't number one by much.
@@grafgoat
Yeah ... also interesting that in the years 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993 until one of the Graf's fanatical fans decided to plant a knife into the back of the the TOP RANKED Seles on a changeover in Germany, the head-to-head records vs. Graf for both Martina Navratilova and Monica Seles had Graf LOSING to both of these players -- and Navratilova was in her 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st years on the tour in those years.
@@jjsggg1465 During Steffi's career Sanchez and Hingis were also #1.
And during Serena's career even players like Wozniacki, Safina, Azarenka, Jankovic were #1.
So what?
@@jjsggg1465 Yes, in 1990-93 Steffi had a losing record EVEN against an over-the-hill Navratilova.
Thank you for providing more proof for Steffi's severe slump.
So no wonder that the second best player of that time, Monica Seles, had a lot of success.
Monica was intentionally giving it to Steffi's back hand. The moment Steffi gets to her forehand, she won those points.
Seles was 3-1 in slam finals and has reduced their slam gap to just three slams despite five years age difference. Steffi 22 will always be inflated by stabbing
No, deflated.
Even you will admit that with Seles being in the draw Steffi would have won Wimbledon 94 as well.
And which slams would Steffi not have won without the stabbing???
We should concentrate far more on how Seles's slam count is inflated due to the nasty Graf Blackmail Scandal. I mean, Steffi made 13 slam finals in a row and suddenly she misses 5 of the next 9???
Sadly crime is a part of life....
@@carrerau7138 lmao seles was 3-1 in slam finals against stabbergirl. Inflated. Graf would be at 15 slams maximum.
@@carrerau7138 lmao stabbing is worse than any blackmail.graf was playing her best by 1992. And was still owned in slams..cope
Graf was such a sore loser, everyone of her compatriots hated her and the only reason she won so many GS’s was because her fan tried to murder Seles which kept her out of the game for 2 yrs. Graf is a fraud in the record books.
She is not a fraud she is a great champion but nowhere near where people put her, I dont think she would even be in Martina and Chrissie class of slams won she would be around 12-16 sharing the rest with Seles
@jl3322 Ohhh somone's bitter. Graf's opponents didn't hate her, it was Monica who was the standoffish one. Graf won the GOLDEN SLAM BEFORE SELES WAS STABBED. She was already GOAT material.
@@chrisarmelseyibayebek4977 Had she not been injured she would have won 30 slams. It's fun to play "what-ifs"
What thatdamn knife did for Monica's mind ,we should live in Monica 'records never beaten
