I remember being played Bleach before Nevermind and saying 'Wow, they're as heavy as Slayer'. I bought it very quick and saw them in a small venue Edinburgh, supported by L7.
Soundgarden and Screaming Trees were on repeat in my home and my car, very soon after that. Great days!
I think they got so big because they brought all the metallers, thrashers, indie fans, punks, various alt. types, pop fans, normies, Rolling Stone readers and hippies, etc. together. There was no denying they and Kurt's brilliance. Read Mark Lanegan's autobiography. He saw the potential and knew that their time would probably come, very soon after meeting them and hearing them play.
Now their are a lot of geeks anoraks and snobs who like to say, in retrospect 'horrible grunge killed hair metal/ metal in general/ punk rock (insert your shitty old taste in music here)' but they couldn't have really been listening. They just didn't like how ridiculous their shitty taste, shitty style and shitty record collections had been exposed for actually being, all along.
At the same time: it takes all sorts to make a world. It would be a boring place if everyone was the same. But no matter what nay-sayers say: what Kurt and Nirvana gave us was..., is... and forever will be....

My bezzie mate Waza did the onstage monitors for Nirvana in Manchester just as Nevermind was exploding & he said just what jack Black was explaining about the audience being completely transfixed & caught totally in the moment - & he said after the gig people were just walking around in a daze. Kurt & Nirvana did this to crowds right across the globe night after night - no wonder they became MASSIVE !! My mate Waza also said they didn't need to put 'any' effect on his voice except a little compression, no reverb or delay cos his vocal was so powerful it simply didn't need any 'colouring' whatsoever. Love that story lots. Love Kurt & love Waza from the heart. He is a beautiful person & is a fantastic friend whom I'm lucky to behold. One can get away with doing daft things in life but always choose your friends carefully cos they'll stick with you thru all weathers. God bless you all. Peace !! Love IS a The Answer. Rx

I was there, too, and he’s right about the crowd, although apparently he’s got the date wrong-it was the day after Bill Graham died. He’s probably confused because Chris took a moment between songs to dedicate the show to BG.
It was just a few months after Nevermind was released, I think. So it was an exciting time to see them, and the Warfield is a great sized venue. Definitely felt like the place to be at the time, which helped make the energy.

I get the sense he's just pulling the reporter's leg though, that cookie-cutter story of experiencing greatness in the making seems to be delivered with an unseen wink. Nirvana had plenty of fans early on and exploded onto the scene, but Jack Black is laying it on thick enough that you can't help but wonder what he really thought at the time.

      waddellski YAWN
You're comparing 2 bands that were NOTHING alike. Besides both coming out of Seattle around the same time, and both lead singers being herion addicts, they were completely different musically. So why the fuck do you people insist on comparing the two bands?

Never Never my beef is that everywhere I see Nirvana hailed as the gods of grunge and while they were good I think that alice in chains were the musical apex of the genre.

waddellski Actually, members of Alice in Chains has said that they weren't grunge more-so than they were metal, so your "beef" is bullshit

Loved seeing him preform before foo fighters at cal jam… Dave jumping in to finish their set then running to the main stage to do a historical backward walk for the foo fighters THEN having a nirvana “reunion”…. Something I’ll never forget
