  • The Gems of Africa Safari & Tours Team took a domestic flight with Safair from Cape Town to the Lanseria Airport, Johannesburg. We hired a vehicle, which went quite smooth, and drove through to the very popular BIG 5 Pilanesberg National Park only a 2hr 30min drive away from the airport.
Guests come to Pilanesberg National Park to enjoy the untamed African landscape. Here the Big 5 roam free. The the mixture of Lowveld and Kalahari vegetation ensure a lush environment for the wildlife to thrive.
The park is also popular because there’s a variety of accommodation options available.
We were able to stay at 4 different lodges in Pilanesberg National Park located all over the park. We thoroughly enjoyed the 5 Star Ivory Tree Game Lodge including the delicious food, exciting game drives, spacious suite and friendly staff.
Shepherd’s Tree Game Lodge is a magnificent lodge concession awarded by the North West Parks and Tourism Board within the existing Pilanesberg Game Reserve. It lies in an exclusive-use zone in the south-western portion of the 57,250ha Big 5 and malaria-free Reserve, offering commanding views of the distant bushveld amphitheater.
The Lodge acts as a central gathering spot and social environment for guests, as well as the point from which all activities depart and return. Guests can enjoy two guided game drives daily, which are conducted in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve’s Wilderness Area during the morning and evening in an open 10-seater game viewing vehicle. These outings take three to four hours, with a sundowners stop at sunset, and a coffee stop in the morning.
Experience the best of Pilanesberg accommodation with the hallmark of the entire Shepherd’s Tree: flawless finishes, featured architecture and exquisite interior design.
Next to the park is the Sun City resort and casino. Here kids enjoy the Valley of Waves and Waterworld. Golfers can get their fix at the Gary Player Country Club.
At Pilanesberg National Park you can spot leopards, rhinos, elephants, lions, Cape buffaloes, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, hippos, hyenas crocodiles and the Cape wild dog. In addition, impala, kudu, antelope, bontebok, blesbuck, and nyala graze over the plains.
There’s also an abundance of birdlife as more than 360 species have been sighted here.
