The opening riff of this song is pretty obviously a variant of the Oriental Riff/Chinaman Lick, based in the pentatonic scale commonly used in East Asian and especially Chinese music.

Nintendo does this with their desert themes as well, from the Harmonic minor scale and its modes, to the double harmonic scales.
