How To Clean A Round Hand File

- Use a file and some of the swarf it produces gets stuck in the gaps between its teeth. As this swarf builds up it clogs the teeth, files efficiency reduces, and the surface being filed is damaged.
It is important to remove the swarf, but how can you do that on the curved surface of a round or half round file? That is what this video is all about.
How to clear the clogged teeth of a round or half round file.
I once showed Whitney Houston this method. She was very impressed and from that point kept all her round files in a wonderful clean condition. This statement about Ms Houston, is of course, completely untrue!

Lots of good information Jim. I enjoyed the video and hope all is going well for you.
Hello again Dennis. Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
I'm almost back to normal now, I can use the cameras and computer fairly well but still having trouble with the TV remote control boxes, not sure what the trouble is there. Take Care Jim.
Thank you for the video. Good info.
Hello Bilge. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thank you for the comment. Take Care Jim
Thanks for the video
Hello Andreas. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for your comment. Take Care Jim
Excellent tips I have a fair few to go through. PS I bet it was Birley Shassey not Whitney - she has a cracking workshop and almost always in her shed.
Hello Archi. Thank you for the comment. I think you may be right about Whitney, some time ago I think in Vogue magazine she did a workshop tour. Her files were lovely and clean! Take Care Jim
G'day,
Elegant
But
Complicated.
As a
Hillbilly...;
My suggestion is to
Try a Wood-handled
Steel
Wire Brush..., stroked
Parallel to the
File-Cuts...
The Wire Brush is
Annealed.
The File is
Hardened.
The Steel Brush is
Still
Harder than the
Aluminium, Wood, or Plastic.
But the Brush is softer than the
Hardened
File.
Go
Straight to the
Wire Brush...
In my humble
Opinion...
Stay safe,
;-p
Ciao !
I agree with the wire brush approach. I tend to use a wire wheel on a drill press (angle grinder version will work just as well) and run the file against the wire wheel at the angle of the teeth across the file along the entire length.
No need for a special tool and far faster than the manual approach. 😀

G'day,
Yep,
We concur...!
Yay Team...
Have a good one.
Stay safe,
Ciao !
Hello all. As I said in the video, using a wire brush on a coarse file works very well. But I have found with finer files the wire brush does not remove all the small particles from between the the teeth. I also worry about using a wire wheel on a file, it may remove more of the particles, but does It damage the sharp edge of the teeth? I know the wires of the wheel are moving in line with the teeth of the file, and also the wire is softer than the file teeth, but on a wire wheel there are a lot of wires passing, they are passing at speed, and there is a lot of rubbing going on against the sharp cutting edges of the files teeth. I have no proof the teeth are being damaged its just doesn't feel right to me. I'll be interested to hear what you think. Take Care Jim
Or, for the round file. Put the file in the drill press on low speed, and hold the piece of aluminium against the file while gradually moving it down the file.
Hello Tasmedic. Thank you for your comment. Place the round file in the drill press. I will give it a try see how I get on. I suppose you could do the same thing in the lathe as well. Take Care Jim
