Great ideas! I knit and crochet, so that helps me have some variety. Sometimes a quick project gets me going again-a facecloth or preemie hat. I make pet blankets for my local animal shelter. They check off lots of boxes for me. Pet blankets are really just big swatches, and can be as complicated or simple as I feel like making. Pet blankets are quick and can be great stash busters, and I get satisfaction when I drop them off at the shelter. Don’t tell my yarn projects, but I usually have a jigsaw puzzle going, which gives me a different way to enjoy color and use my hands. 😊

I look thru all my saved favorites on ravelry. Sometimes i just take a break and organize my supplies, visit my stash, and all you fabulous knitting teachers and knitting content creators keep me inspired even when my needles arent clacking away. Sometimes being a knitter is just listening and watching for a bit.

Absolutely love this. I love that you said you don’t have to finish. I have been doing this for years. And I knit just to knit. Not too many folks understand lol. And I frog things that I start if I’m not feeling “it”😄🧶

Excellent! Starting does not mean you have to finish.

I totally agree about swatching. It's my favorite thing to do. Sometimes I just want to keep my hands busy so I will look into some of my knitting stitch books or watch a TH-cam video to learn a new stitch.....get the feel of a yarn.....experiment.......make up patterns.......be nerdy......etc. etc Definitely helps motivation.

#1 tip: Catch some of Barbara Benson's contagious enthusiasm. #2 tip: Look at the stack of dishes I'll have to do if I'm not knitting. On a more serious note, love your advice to leave an unsatisfying project unfinished, but it can be so hard to follow for those of us who were raised with "Clean your plate" and "Half done is NOT done!" and similar disciplines. For years if I got past the first page of a book, I felt obligated to finish it. The same mindsets can easily enter our knitting lives, but it can be so liberating to break free of them. Back to non-seriousity. Have you ever heard of the Reverse Boyfriend Sweater Curse? I think I invented it, but I'm not sure. It's when you break up with the guy so you don't have to finish knitting that sweater you hate with that yarn you hate.

Great ideas Barbara…Awhile back, I crocheted two big blankets for two great grandsons and since they are in constant contact with each other, the blankets had to finished in close proximity. When I finished those, I did not pick up a hook or needles for about a year…..that was enough! Recently I have started a knitted piece and here we go again! Knitting is my favorite!

I live in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. People knit mitts, hats and scarves and hang them on fences and statues and other things downtown for the unhoused community! ✌❤🇨🇦

Thanks for reminding me that I don’t have to finish the helical mitts I started just to learn the skill. I don’t like the colors, and I don’t need another pair of fingerless mitts. I’m just going to learn the “thumb” bit and then frog it. So freeing!

every year, there are charities all around the world that take donations of knitted or crocheted hat, scarves, gloves and socks for the homeless....if you are in a region that gets colder than 50 degress F, even the homeless needs warm clothing.....that is a great purpose to knit or crochet

❤ Great video, ideas and advice. I non-gauge swatch all the time. My swatch can be a lot of rows and then I leave it out where I can look at it, sometimes for days before I decide to either keep going or I just enjoyed all of the elements of the process and reclaim the yarn for future use. All the best, JL

Yes for tiny notebooks! Carry one with you, instead of knitting, and sketch ideas. Or read previous ones! (This I will be doing on a train tomorrow morning). Thank you, Barbara!

Great suggestions Barbara! I tend to be a all or none crafter so the idea of not continuing a project if I don't like it is a relief!! As an adventurous beginner in knitting, I do try to look for patterns that I can finish; therefore, giving me the sense of accomplishment I crave. Just finished Dee OKeefes Caine scarf, worsted weight, LOVE that as a beginner and easy! Thanks Barbara for your videos, you are a hoot!!

I forced myself to finish a pair of socks because I’d promised them to a friend and I hated it. It’s been more Xbox and less knitting since then. I’ll try some of your ideas - I do have things I want to do, just can’t seem to feel enthusiastic about them right now.

I enjoy making dishcloths for that very reason of swatching. It's something new and it doesn't take alot of time to make..There are some really complicated/unique dishcloth patterns out there in the knittingland! they can definitely spruce up my attitude!

I'm in a slump right now. Cannot seem to find any inspiration. When this happens I do mindlesss knitting. Just do a repetitive stitch that is easy to do and still eventually wind up with a scarf or shawl.
