I think you should bring a Garmin handheld GPS for navigation if you go back again, people use them to navigate the remotest places on Earth such as the Arctic

I took a look with Google Hearth and with Openstreetmap There are a lot of paths between the place and Shalginski Also between the place and Karazhal You coud consider to hop directly from Karazhal to the place BUT many of those patsh ARE NOT MAPPED if they were, it'd be easier to create a route to there You probably just took the wrong one It'd be relatively easy to do with openstreetmap Also, the next time the car should have a working odometer ;-)

At a minimum he needs to use a bike or horse to cover more ground. Can die out in the steppe on foot.
