So often high school athletes will have a 5+ second difference between their first and second laps in the 800. Johnson went out in 60-61 here so she had a 10 second differential. Had she gone out in 63-64 she could have run quite a bit faster. It didn’t matter for the competition. She is clearly a superior middle distance runner.

She ran the race the way she intended. The goal is to peak at the right time. State for her isn’t the right time. It is also MAY. Still early in track season outside of high school.

@@blackmenachievellc1950 Clearly she went out too fast and could have run a faster race with more even splits. There are multiple HS girls now running consistent sub 2:06 times and they do this with disciplined splits.

The 800 is nerve-racking because you see everyone go out super hard so naturally you don’t wanna fall behind. I have similar split differentials too and it’s tough man. 😪
