    I'm pretty sure the water based inks have water in the mixture, which would cause the pages to warp. Whereas the pigment based inks are made with oils or solvents. I love that bronze brown on your camo covered bible.

    Thanks for clarifying, Cat! Just a thought, no experience: I would be very careful with alcohol based ink. Alcohol based markers bleed through most papers that are not formulated for them, water based markers don´t. Maybe dye ink and archival ink are best.

      That is exactly what Jude E. said here in the comments too. I kinda thought something would happen because I've never heard of anyone talk about in the Bible community so I was really trying to think of all the questions people have asked me about or may ask me about. I like to try everything out so you all know I'm not just playing the guessing game 😉😊 if I don't know about something you have a question about and I don't know the answer I'll do my very best to help find the answer out any way I can.

    Do you have a recent video of your gilting process after all the “lessons learned”? I’m curious how far you fan the pages, how you’re doing the top/bottom so uniform now, etc…. It seems like you’ve changed up a few things since your last “how to” video and I’m going to give this a shot. Thanks in advance!

      @@catwoods5499 thank you. I actually just watched a Crossway video that shows their production of the heirloom bibles and they apply their art gilt without fanning the pages at all. I might give that a shot first and see how well it takes. I don’t think it will turn out as dark as how you’ve gotten then, you have been getting very good results lately.

    Sis, I just received a brown in the Ranger Archival brand called “Acorn” and it was used to cover a bright red that I had on my green Bible (which I no longer liked). And it came out a nice brown. Not a super dark brown but it’s a deep brown like middle brown. I quite like how it’s turned out

  • @bella-bee
    @bella-bee ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you say the archival ink takes the gold off? You also said it’s beautiful so I was confused there. Thank you. I think you’re so brave to apply ink to an expensive bible, so skilled. I’d be terrified!

    • @embeddedautomation2464

      I just used the Ranger Archival Ink Emerald Green dye on the edges of my "Men of Character" CSB study bible. It turned out great. It did not remove any of the gold, but I added a 2nd application to the long edge and I think it was a bit much because now I can see some of the green even when the bible is fully closed. However, it still looks awesome when you open it up and see the wonderful green accent along the page edges. One tip I've learned is to close the bible tightly and wipe the gold edges off after you've applied a layer of dye. Try to do it quickly before the dye dries and sticks to the gold. I managed to get a perfect result using Ranger Archival Ink Vermillion dye on my ESV Reader's Edition personal size bible.

    Dye inks are reactive to water and should not be used on bibles. The perspiration from your hands will smudge it. Always use an ink that is permanent
    Distress will not be chalky feeling however, Distress Oxide is chalky. Both will re-wet.
    Archival Ink is permanent and should work well.

    Maybe it looks different in person, but I kinda like the wavy line effect in the video. It reminds me of curly maple figuring on guitar wood or antique furniture. Could look even moreso in a deep yellow.
    But I probably couldn't get it to do the waves on purpose...

    I have a rebind that I did on a presentation Bible. It was a new text block of a Brevier Blackface with the Cyclopedia so it was well worth it. It has no gilt whatsoever and I used a small family rebinder that put a nice simple purple leather cover on it. I've got deep purple Ranger archival ink at the ready. We shall soon seeeee. @@

    Waviness happens with wetting; paper swells when it gets wet with water, not alcohol, and it stays that way. Just leaving your bible in a humid atmosphere can do that

    Hi, Cat!! I love your channel!! You are so creative and such an inspiration!! I haven't had a chance to watch this whole playlist, but I'm planning to before I "dive in"!! 😊 There is one thing I am a bit concerned about so I'd like to ask you about it. I used to be a very active scrapbooker, a long time ago. Everything I read advised using archival or acid free products, otherwise the products might damage the original item, whether it's photos or the paper of the scrapbook or Bible, over time. So my question is are all products safe to use now?
    Just wanting to figure it out before I buy my ink! 😁

  • @2lpitzers

    I made a huge mistake, and had to buy a new Bible! To get the color exactly as I wanted, I went over one ink with acrylic paint. The color was beautiful, but the pages were so stuck together that it was unusable. NO ACRYLIC INK! Cat, thanks for the tips💜✝️💜

    • @Tzuriah
      @Tzuriah ปีที่แล้ว

      Acrylic paint or acrylic ink???? I have some beautiful gold acrylic ink (like calligraphers use) that I was going to use on an old Bible. I’ve worn most of the gilding off (it wasn’t good gilding to begin with). I can’t use a regular color like Cat is using. I’ve seen examples of where people have done that and it makes the Bible look like it has a “skin disease” (imo).

  • @rickking3805

    I was hoping to be able to post a pic or two of my purple gilding. I didn’t have spongey thingeys so I just wiped it on with paper towels. Worked fine. It could maybe use another coat as it might have a light spot or two but it looks great to me. Lol

      Yeah I'm so excited for you.... now beware no book or Bible is safe now that you know how to Art Gilt your pages 😉🤣😂
      Ohhhh and yes you can always go back in a few days after the color settles and apply another coat. I wouldn't recommend just touching up because than you will or may have darker spots than you originally wanted.

      @@catwoods5499 I think they are pretty safe. LOL I have a motto to not mess with things that don't need to be messed with. LOL Believe it or not, I actually failed art in school. Arts and crafts supplies in my hands are generally considered dangerous weapons.... I only did this one as it had bare page edges with nothing on them and the poor Bible just looked unfinished somehow. Here it had this updated cover and all but was stuck with these bare page edges. It just needed SOMETHING on them. I initially looked into what it would take to have the edges gilded in gold or silver but found out it would just be way too much for that. So, I gave the Bible what it needed to be whole again. 😛
