    Great videos and instructions! When I'm rolling, I always have in mind "break grips", "don't let them control the head", "awareness of what the other is doing", "where the head goes the body follows" and many other key messages you often transmit. As a white belt, I'm still missing a lot of technique, but it's working great for surviving 😆

    • @eschelar
      @eschelar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      He mentioned in one roll, break grips immediately, but not all grips are useful. So you might consider also taking a moment to evaluate if the grip is relevant.
      When I roll with a black belt friend of mine, he takes grips in a way that are just traps. The grips sometimes are totally pointless, but then I reach to break and open up vulnerabilities and get my ass kicked. Hehe

    • @matthewwetmore8526
      @matthewwetmore8526 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow, mind blown. As a beginner (1 stripe blue belt) it seems like I have just a few techniques for most position. But as my teammates become more proficient and I become more predictable my techniques aren't as reliable. After watching this video I see my pretty much only half guard escape looks like a good opportunity to turn it into a butterfly sweep. I'm burning this to memory now and hope to try it soon. Oss!

      I only recently learned the correct name for this is "shoulder crunch" butterfly sweep, but I'd also been doing it for years now. It's the only move I can hit against someone who outweighs me by 100 lbs so it definitely is powerful and extremely scalable against big opponents. Threaten the armbar and keep getting the side angle even if you don't know how to do it, and they'll practically sweep themselves when trying to fix the angle.

    Love the butterfly guard, but I seldom get here because I always prefer to get my opponents/ training partners into closed guard. Only reason being I often make the mistake of not playing on my side as much as is needed. The sweeps or reversals fail or don't work and I end up getting passed or out worked.
    You did a beautiful job explaining the core concepts of the guard, as well as giving us prime examples of what can happen to both people working in this sequence. Thanks again Jordan, and thanks Nikki!

    Such a great and through explanation of the butterfly guard. Quick question -- All of your attacks are when they are on their knees, so if they approach you standing or seated, do you do anything to get them to transition to their knees before you initiate any butterfly attacks? Thank you!!
