If people understood the fundamental differences, they could make a more informed decision at an earlier stage of their career. @@Metroun I'm a contractor's QS at present, we see projects after they are pretty much fully designed and tender for them accordingly. It would be good to get an insight into all the work that happens prior to that, right from when a client has the big idea
I studied for 4 years at the University of Technology, Jamaica and within that for years I did internship for a semester at Davidson & Hanna Chartered Quantity Surveying firm that is organised by the school.

Hello Onwah. The best option would be to look for roles that offer an apprenticeship programme. Here, the company would pay for your degree in return for a lower salary and a set time that you have to stay in the company. May I ask where you are based?
Hi Yasin, it really depends on the job you take. Some roles will be on-site QS's who spend all their time in site (obviously with their laptop too) and some jobs may be totally office based. It's always good to ask in the interview where you'll be expected to spend most of your time

Does quantity surveying include on site physical work, or is it more like office work?

I would say Cost Engineer is a job role you’d typically find in the USA which aligns most closely with Quantity Surveyor.
