Will Smith is a 35 year veteran of showbusiness. His wife is not.
Actors are trained to smile and laugh when they are the target of a joke, in a public setting.
I think that training kicked in first. Then his temper trumped that training, and he acted on that.
( After all, he wasn't the target of that particular joke. His wife was.)
Will accepts someone who slept with his wife but he couldn't accept someone joke about his wife's hair? I thought they were "open".
Well it is something she cannot control and I'm sure she's been self conscious about it for a long time and insecure so I understand that because not only he been with her for many years, that's still the mother of your kids and for her to feel disrespected like that, I feel like I understand why he would do such a thing but then again I'm not gonna defend Will because he should've have laugh first.

Lastly, I feel like that slap was for more than just the joke. Will seems like he has built up anger. Not necessarily towards Chris Rock but he took it as an opportunity. Maybe Chris Rock was the example to show other men not to mess with his wife. Cause I would have never took will smith to act that way on national TV. There has to be more to it.

The producers and Rock couldn't know Jadda would be wearing a green dress that night. So that tells me the joke had to be ad-libbed.
Jada has a super mild case of alopecia (as do millions of others). The condition often resolves on its own. It doesn't make you sick. It doesn't kill you. Next thing we know - the world will start freaking out when a celebrity has xerosis cutis (dry skin) or seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff).
I don't think Chris was trying to be hurtful. I don't think he knew she has alopecia. I didn't. I thought that she was making a fashion statement. She's not the first woman to get a buzz cut - e.g. Lupita Nyong'o, Grace Jones. It's actually sometimes done for movie roles - e.g. Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, and Demi Moore (in G.I. Jane). He was making fun of a changeable hairstyle - not a medical condition. That's about as benign as a comedian can get. Also, Jada doesn't seem to be embarrassed by her alopecia. Today, I saw clips of videos that she has made about having alopecia. Chris saved the show by not retaliating. Will is very lucky that Chris decided not to press charges. Some people are commending him for "defending" his wife. Yeah, he's cool with other guys banging his wife, but don't you dare make a joke about her haircut. THAT'S the line.

Actors are part of a very strong workers union. Understand Chris is not pressing charges. Chris was on the job as a union worker, by law employers are required to report all/accident/injuries on the job to state workers compensation board. Then workers compensation has its own investigation into the injury on the job. FYI...remember bob saget just died.
Two things I wish to Jada: 1, that she never gets a real "medical condition" and that she takes a look around, because alopecia IS a medical condition, but it's totally normal for a middle aged woman to have skin issues and a lot of women have much worse things than that; 2. that she confronts her real problem ATM, a macho man who took a giant step back in civilization and respect for women's dignity.

As far as I am considered both Chris and Will were both wrong last night. Chris for making a bad joke and Will's reaction was a little over the top. You actually saw Will laugh at the joke at first until he noticed that Jada wasn't happy about the joke, then his tone changed.
The Academy should have had Will escorted out instead of condoning violence on live tv.
The joke was definitely in poor taste and Rock did notice the cringe from the audience. However, not protecting the host and then awarding his abuser with an oscar and air time sends the wrong message about the whole establishment. Smith should’ve had his award delivered to the car park where he should’ve been escorted. It’s amazing how he pulled the victim card and got away with it. The Academy should’ve known better and this was a catastrophic L for Will.

I don't think he was trying to make fun of her condition specifically, but baldness in general...plus she was wearing a green dress and green is often associated with the army!
