Produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Model T Ford, The American Road highlights the role of automobiles, highway construction, and Ford Motor’s leadership in the development of transportation in the United States. The production mixes archival footage with reenactments and has a contemporary ending in color.

A very sentimental, yet an entertaining and well done documentary from FoMoCo. These nostalgic films were fairly common from Ford's marketing division who played upon Henry Ford's link to rural America. My grandfather didn't grow up on a farm, but he was born in 1901 in San Francisco. He told me that he remembered the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Few ordinary people owned a car when he was growing up. Then, a new car was a possession of the upper class... doctors, attorneys, and business owners. If you were working class like him... you either walked, rode a bicycle, or rode on a street car in a city. Horses were everywhere in cities at that time...not only pulling street cars, but pulling the wagon that made a delivery to your house. If a horse was injured, sick, or dead...then it was left on the side of the road until it was properly buried. Nowadays most people would be horrified to see that in towns and cities...but when my grandparents were young it was normal and accepted. The Model T changed that way of life... a transformation into the modern era. Thanks for sharing this video!

Thanks for posting this. I spent 48 years in transportation. Using the American Road to travel. And getting paid for it. Look at the progress made since this feature was first released. My Ford plug-in hybrid can go 600 miles between fill ups. Or I could drive a Tesla. Elon has revolutionized what Henry Ford started. Thanks for the history lesson.
