The owner here! This boost pipe is prone to snap or burst because of the heat and turbo pressure. The original one was breaking at the jubilee clips, so I replaced it. It did hold well but this was maybe the last push it needed to snap. Max and Martijn are great lads with even better stories to tell. Now going for a better and stronger boost hose 💨😁
Hi mate! In the past i own a VW Passat TDi 130hp with some mods(big intercooler, aluminium hose pipes with silicon conections, Garrett GTB 2260VK and of corse a remap) and that situation that happen to your car happen on my car too due the high boost pressure(2 bar), you get a jump scare due the big burst sound...😂, but my car don't turn off when that situation happens, in your S3 the car turned off when this happen...
I understand why Max said last time that you must have duct tape with you no matter where you are. So that you can fix stuff on the road, doesn't matter if it is a sunroof on the 750i or an intercooler pipe
Seeing the Gauge Cluster of a B5 S4/RS4 or 8L S3, or even the UrS4/6 RS2 just takes you to peak Audi immediately and makes me forget all their flaws. The joy of AZR ripping in 6th is unmatched by the more modern Audis, and the sounds were simply epic.
That intercooler pipe is very prone to open from the high heat coming from turbo on these engines. You should put some heat wrap around the pipe. I did the same in mine, now using silicon forge brand pipe.
@@didinos It can happen. The engine reads x amount of air at the maf sensor. With one pipe open that amount of air is incorrect and the engine runs with an incorrect afr that can cause engine stall. But anyway, it is possible to run the engine in some cases
As a former 1.8t owner myself, I would always worry about any noise like that out of that engine, can't say it was the most dependable thing out there, lots of fun to drive though.
Familiar place for hose to fail and got lucky it was just that 😅 I had a Forge's pipe there, but it never handled the heat as it bursted at the first track day. Put an rather expensive OEM one back in (red, lined with Nomex?) and it has held in for years. My S3 8L is running a 3" exhaust, k&n panel filter and a ecu flash, should make around 260 hp from the MAF readings.
This reminds me of a test I watched on a german car TV show many many years ago (20?). AFAIR they had an M bmw, an AMG (or Brabus) and a RS6 (I think).. during the high speed test something in the Audi exploded and it ended with a big bang too. dont remember what it was, I knew almost nothing about cars back then..
@@weetrcek4133 Thanks, I'm not an expert but I have heard a few turbos, and there was a change in the pitch of this one. Hot or cold, that's never a good sign.
Lol! This happened on my Urs4 all the time. Eventually I got another intercooler and I got rid of the issues as it always popped of at the same place, even with an aftermarket hose.
oh i know that moment when the boost pipe comes off. i had it in the first week after i build my engine thank good just a few hundred meter from my house. but the second time i was drifting mountain roads in the winter and the hose flew off in the middle of nowhere. i tried to fix it but i couldnt get more than 300m befor it flew off again. had to call an friend of mine to tow me to my garage but in the meantime my battery died on me. it was -8C outside my girlfriend in the car and no heating. gotta say that was a cold 30min wait until my friend got to me. i changed my rubber hose with welded stainless steal piping. now its holding the 1.7bar of boos like a champ
Thanks for the video. The “S3” was already one class above the “A3”. At that time, the car was delivered with all-wheel drive, torque limitation to protect the drives and high performance. Back then there was the best of the best. I don't understand why that's not enough for people? Then people should look at “ABT” and buy a car there. If it were untuned, it would be fully throttle-proof and insensitive to "BIG BANG and silence".
There is no point in turning up to 7000RPM, if the performance drops there then I would think about properly monitoring the temperatures, I drive an A3 8L 1.8T with 300hp.
I used to have 1 of these. Best car i owned, wish i kept a hold of it. When i got mine remapped plus other mods i took it for a test drive and found it had no power over 4k revs. Checked it all over and found the OEM air intake pipe was collapsing in on itself with the extra power demand (was the only pipe i hadn’t yet changed) Once i changed it over to a forge silicone one it was a beast.
Yep, mine done the same. Turbo coming on boost when tuned caused the TIP to collapse under vacuum. A silicone TIP with bigger diameter solved it with a bonus much louder air recirculation blow off noise.

Lucky you didn't break down on the M3 here in the Uk. You probably would have been run over, after some bright spark though smart motorways was a good idea. Motorway with no hard shoulder, ideal for a pile up and making life hard for the emergency services.
I've been in this situation, but with a pipe under the engine block, i had to wait for 2.5 hours for road side assistance just to jack my car up because i didn't have a car jack which could jack up my car high enough to reach the pipe, then when i got home i checked and the clamp on that hose had come lose again, instantly replaced that piece of shit hose with a better one, never had any issues again
That was an easy fix, get back in and start booting it again. Imagine having a similar problem with a modern car, you ll be stuck there until the 2nd coming of Jesus. Well done Max.

The way "big bang" sounds in dutch still makes me laugh. As a german, dutch just sounds funny.

In Dutch you would say "goede knal / flinke knal".

Not as exepenive a bang as it could have been!
This is over-pressure; nothing to worry about other than looking at the DV valve or changing it. I had the same issue in the past. 😀
