    We saw you today and I yelled out to you as you were heading out of the channel in Kemah! Taking our ASA 103/104 with Bay Area this weekend. We have a Catalina 310 on Lake Grapevine and live in Highland Village, TX. We watch all of your videos. So cool to see you pass us by!! Looking forward to seeing your next video! You guys rock!!

    Yes! This is the episode Ive been waiting for 20+ minutes of offshore sailing in a Catalina! Thanks Matt for sharing this voyage. Too bad you couldnt have a little more wind. Maybe next time.

      Awesome! Yeah, a bit more wind would've changed the whole trip!

    Strange the channel does not have more subs.

    What a great opportunity that was to get in some practice for a long journey. That was cool that you were able to catch the sound and even a glimpse of the dolphins swimming next to the boat at night. It would have probably freaked me out hearing something like that on my watch in the middle of the night. Thanks for the heads up, we're planning to do some overnight sailing this summer and that helps to know to expect such sounds. You are doing a great job on these videos. :D

      Thanks so much! Yes, it freaked me out too! And just when I was looking over the port side, they'd blow air from starboard and make me jump. I wish I had the GoPro running in the cockpit, you would have 🤣🤣🤣 at me!

    If he would have taken the fishing rod out of the holder, you might have landed that fish. Just a thought for next time.

    Excellent videos on a family life on a small cruiser. Have you considered using a Wind vane instead of the autopilot. I found it saved me a lot of energy and so easy to use for offshore sailing.

    • @TheFosterJourney
      @TheFosterJourney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes, I'd love to have a wind vane for steering! What brand did you have? Was it better in light, mid, or heavy wind?

      @@TheFosterJourney I have a Hydrovane on my Beneteau 461 along with a hydrogenerator, which is attached to the windvane. Great when there is no sun and on long ocean hauls, keeps the batteries topped up and is using the boat movement through the water to generate electricity. The hydrovane is fantastic as it has its own rudder. I have used it for most of my offshore sailing and is one of the best purchases I have made. Did a solo transatlantic and was able to sleep easier with the hydrovane running the boat. Of course had alarms set for AIS etc. I have enjoyed watching your videos but was concerned a little in the lack of tethering and pfds. Not much of a problem on a canal but offshore is a different "kettle of fish".

    Thanks Matt, seems like a great opportunity to see another sailor’s set up on the same boat. It would seem to me the athwart ship aft berth would be easier to get out of? BTW, It’s probably my end but last Sunday and today I didn’t get notified of your post. I’m now selecting all notifications again but I keep getting an error message. But I know to check for you on Sundays. Cheers

    • @TheFosterJourney
      @TheFosterJourney  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, in a way it is. Good eye on the berth! The athwartship berth also has full headroom to sit up, whereas the fore and aft layout doesn't.
      Btw....we send out an email notification too if you'd like to grab that 👍

    sailing looks fun but how physically fit do you need to be to sail a boat across the gulf?

    • @TheFosterJourney
      @TheFosterJourney  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's a level of fitness needed, and there are aides such as auto pilot, electric winches...so it can be pretty easy! Mental fitness, and cool nerves I think may be more important 🤙👍

    • @fakiirification
      @fakiirification ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say that general good health is more important, as having something major happen off shore, like a stroke or heart attack, is pretty much a death sentence at worst, a bankrupting emergency rescue bill at best.

    I know that place! Been to Fourchon and all of the ports on the LA and TX coasts so many times I can tell you where you are from one or two photos most of the time.
    Drillin' those nice deep holes for the much needed "Go Juice" and proud of it. I'd be embarrassed to say I put up electric windmills for a living.

      @@TheFosterJourney Well, there's not much to it except some oilfield shops, heliport or two and some fishing boats.
