  • Tips and tricks on how you can make yourself actually feel richer and happier at the same time. In a way, it is a form of practicing gratitude. Just thinking about it helps but you can force this by putting yourself temporarily in a disadvantaged situation. Living in that situation or in someone else's shoe for a time can really drive the point home.

Thumbs up. BUT just personally I like having a less expensive home in an expensive neighborhood. I can walk less than 2 minutes and be on a street with million-dollar+ houses. However, mine is less than half of that and I get all the benefits of a very safe/secure, attractive, and well-maintained neighborhood. I use the excellent free services too- lakes, libraries, great roads. Even though I paid my house off early, I still have property taxes, so I use the amenities.

I still remember walking to grocery store for a little over a mile in freezing weather in snow when I had no car. I think about those days all the time which keeps me reminding and keeping my lifestyle always in check. I have watched many of your videos but this one is definitely my most favorite. Great work!

Very interesting video! 4:45 is something I totally agree with. Also, I would like to add something else:
Focus your life around something that can't be bought for riches. For instance - getting a great physique, becoming an artist, a musician etc etc. These are hobbies/lifestyles where money won't make you happier, but rather, your skill set will. To focus your life around something like this is very efficient to maintain a frugal lifestyle while still getting daily rewards/feeling successful.

The most worthwhile things cannot be bought. But money does play a certain role still.

Gratefulness. Very important. Thank you for reminding me. I thought about this topic just now and realized that there are not much differences in terms of my daily lifestyle even after paying off the mortgage and save more than ever. I figure that money don't really change people's personality in most cases, especially they have kicked their butt off to achieve that level of a security. There is a difference, though, even though I still shop my kids' soccer gears from a second hand store and live frugal life, I feel better because I "chose" this way and I know that I can retire with dignity, donate more and enjoy the freedom.

Second had is no big deal after you use it a few times anyway. The ability to even buy the gear... now that is something to be grateful about. I think even if we remind ourselves once in a while, it isn't enough. We need it daily. Every time you do it, you body reacts to that feeling.

I think your idea of walking to a grocery store is good for so many reasons: it saves on gas, helps me become stronger, teaches me whatever about my neighborhood possibly meeting a neighbor, helps me save for car repairs, makes me more attenuated with the outdoors, ramps up my appreciation for not wasting food!

    • @BeatTheBush

I actually did it recently. Before doing it, I thought it would be a big pain but after, I feel like I can do it more often. Of course, having time to do it is another story.

yes, walking to grocery store can be great, when weather is nice. Just sometimes you have to watch out for traffic. Plus, most people can use the extra exercise.

    • @DeborahE7

DM Blackburn - I did this before I had babies. Then it’s next to impossible unless you use your baby’s stroller as a grocery cart which I’ve done sometimes. A large double stroller with a lower shelf works. But you’d have to do this several times a week for a large family.

    • @danpt2000
      @danpt2000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Level-headed - there are foldable shopping carts out there. My parents who are in 70s and 80s live in the city, and do not drive. They shop with their own cart most of the time.

    • @DeborahE7
      @DeborahE7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@danpt2000 - Yes, foldable grocery carts are wonderful if you don't have babies to take with you on your walk to the grocery store. That is why I use the lower shelf in a baby stroller. Because my children are sitting in the double stroller. I don't think I could push a foldable cart and a baby stroller! LOL.

Great video. I never thought about temporary, voluntary deprivation as a way to feel richer/ more gratitude for what I have. I need to give this a try! I always feel richer when I observe the lives of my co-workers. On the surface, they seem to have more: larger houses, new cars, going out to eat all the time, lots of vacations, etc. But looking deeper I realize that they are living paycheck to paycheck, may never be able to retire, and are utterly dependent on their jobs. This is when I truly feel "rich."

    I like your videos dude!
By nature I am a frugal shopper and I think that trait was passed down to me from my Aunt who also taught me some great tricks.
    Groceries for family:
    1. Learn to can foods you buy in bulk as well as foods you grow in a garden.
    2. Buy meats only when they come on sale. I buy beef chuck, roasts, pork loin, Boston butt pork, ham, turkey, chicken breasts, etc when they come on sale. Last week I bought 20 pounds of chicken breasts de-boned for .99 a pound, last night I bought chuck roast at 3.50 a pound. I usually can the chicken breast and pork and put that on the shelf - it will last for years. The beef I cooked and froze in packs since I have a deep freezer. I Do not buy meats and store them uncooked.
    3. I bought and installed a bidet so I no longer use toilet paper. If you have ever used one you will never want to use toilet paer again. I have been using mine for 10 years - its simple and connects to my existing toilet so I no longer need or use toilet paper. My wife and daughters love it because of how clean they get their bottoms each and every time.
    4. I bought a water purifier from burpey - bought it used and placed the filter - I can make up to 5 gallons of fresh clean no fluoride water using the water from the tap or rom rainwater that I collect from my tin roof. Its delicious and effective.
    5. We drink tea instead of soft drinks. Lot cheaper
    6. We buy a sack of potatoes around February when they are 15.00 for 50 pounds. We can them and /or cook them whole in a rock pot then freeze them . these methods are not good for mashed potatoes but man they can be used from French fries to smothered potatoes to soups.
    7. Tomatoes and salsa - we grow our own and can them we make our own salsa and tomato sauce to v8 juice from this
    8. Beans Beans and More beans - any and every variety we can them.
    9. Rice - we buy a 50 pound sack once every other year for about the same cost as 4 bags of rice . very cheap and it lasts.
    10. Any dry food we purchase like flour, sugar, corn starch, cereal, we pour into a quart mason jar and seal the lid. Sometimes we suck or vacuums seal the jars - they last longer and it keeps bugs and moisture from spoiling the foods.
    11. beef, vegetable and chicken broth - very healthy and easy to make. Most people throw away the caruses I ask my family and friends to save them for me int eh freezer when I have enough I make my own then jar it - it last for years but I use that in place of water when making soup , ice, etc
Vehicles - Buy a vehicle that gets good gas mileage pretty simple
    1. try to do simple routine maintenance like changing the oil yourself can save a bit each year and car will last longer.
Budget - Take a class on budgeting for your family they are offered from time to time though out most communites = it pays
    Live below your means
Get rid of cable - try and use and antenna - its free
Use your internet to watch almost every movie nd then some online its free and a lot cheaper - if there is a show you want to watch try and do it at a friends house and make it a get together
Pay off your debt - if you have any debt remember the interest you are paying is money thown away buy something only if you have the money for it
School - College is a wonderful thing but go for a trade instead -
Best advice you can hear is learn a trade. Electrical, welding, accounting, nursing, Plumbing, teaching, mortician, any engineering degree, optometrist, medical doctor, and lawyer. those are the top basics that in my experience never lose out on jobs and are needed all the time. If you are going to go to college take it serious you have the rest of your life to play. Stay away from anything a liberal college tries to sell \you like a degree in the following because they are just trying to fill spaces they dont care about you: Communications. A bachelor's degree in communications could lead to nearly any career in the realm of media, visual arts, or broadcasting. ... Psychology. ... Theatre Arts. ... Fashion Design. ... Sociology. ... Liberal Arts. ... Microelectronic Engineering. ... Fine Arts. you will surely find yourself one day out of college with no job and lots of debt. The college you go to will tell you they will find you a job when you graduate I guarantee you they wont.

“Set aside a certain number of days, during which you shall be content with the scantiest and cheapest fare, with coarse and rough dress, saying to yourself the while: ‘Is this the condition that I feared?'” - Seneca. Probably not as bad as you thought. Practicing poverty.

I buy my clothes from a second hand stores and fast three days of the week. This is out of habit. I am uneasy wearing anything flashy, And eating too much makes me queesy. What makes me feel rich is paying my bills, Having a bit left over at month's end, And standing up straight. I feel like a queen.

When I made a bunch of money a couple years ago that allowed me to retire at 45, I went out and spent $2k on custom tailored clothes. Although they are very very nice, they also advertise wealth. I've never worn them, except one short sleeve button down because it fits me so well! That all said, $2k on clothes isn't very much at all now that I think of it. Some people spend that and more on a single item!! Shout out to the OP for quoting Seneca!! "ON the shortness of life" was the first thing I read after making it!!

Have posted previously on other of your videos, but this video has excellent advice. As mentioned before, my wife and I completely changed how we live just over 5 years ago. In order to help “reset” our way of thinking after all of those years we took menial jobs for 6 months. My wife was a teacher and I was in large project commercial construction management. We sold pretty much everything we owned, quit our careers, and took a job doing janitorial contract work. At the same time we also started our home renovations business. We bought a much older home, used cars, and got rid of all consumer debt. Fast forward five years and we are still on track. No credit cards...no new cars...no luxury items like motorcycles etc. Our work truck has 130k mikes (toyota tundra....runs great) and our car has 302k mikes (runs great...looks really nice too, amd this is coming from someone that drove brand new cars for 20 years). We dont even have cable tv. In fact, we dont even watch tv....no loss though because there isnt anything on worth watching. Even the news has been designed to keep people in a state of emotional panic so that they feel like they need the system that is being sold to them.
We have literally been sold on a lifestyle of consumption.....have been told that things bring happiness....the pursuit of things determines our worthiness.....and the amount of things we have reveals our success. None of this is true. We now live in a much smaller and older home, drive used cars, have much fewer things than before.....and we are much happier. We have more time together as a family. We have more time to give to the community and others. We have more time for personal growth and development. We have more time to pursue other interests and even financial ventures.....even if some of those ventures fail. We work hard, but we arent slaves to the system around us or the things that we purchased in our efforts to find happiness, success, and fulfillment. We simply do NOT need the stuff. We have been lied to.

    • @BeatTheBush

They really want you to work as hard as you can never ending. It's really cool that in we are indeed living in the future where we can earn enough with only a faction of our day to meet of bodily needs. But not necessarily our perceived needs which could be manipulated to be insatiable.

The one big thing I really miss is owning a car. I love the convenience of just getting in my own car anytime I wish to go anywhere I want. Since I no longer work I went ahead and sold my car. It was already twelve years old and was starting to breakdown and was an expense I could no longer afford.. I live in the city and I ride the buses when I need to go somewhere. The bus stop is right by my house and a monthly bus pass runs 40 dollars.

what people forget, is money is supposedly a record of each individual's productivity. But it really isn't, since the income inequality can be so ridiculous in the USA. So, people need to start connecting with other people on a more personal level, instead of just using money as a medium.

Oh gosh. I didn't even realize! The thing is, when Charles Dickens wrote his novels, they featured extremely impoverished people. Paupers. Today we say "poor". Watching these shows inspired by Dicken's writings or based on his novels has made me realize how fortunate we are. I think Dickens was against poverty and the people or institutions that perpetuated it. Think about it - I'm not anything special because I was born an American in this time period. I am fortunate to be able to read Dickens (or read at all) and even more fortunate to be able to watch the above-mentioned shows on a smart TV! Anyway, thanks as always for your tips and tricks.

Speak for yourself... I feel richer with every bank statement from my high interest savings account ( with an online bank) because it's fun watching the balance increase through interest alone. I'm finally making money without having to work for it. That first $2.17 I made on the balance was much, much sweeter than any paycheque.

With your bank account, you should imagine how much that value results in cash. For example, (100) $1's equal $100; $2's equal $200; $5's equal $500; $10's equals $1,000; $20's equals $2,000; $50's equals $5,000; $100's equal $10,000 (A brick of cash). 10 bricks equal $100,000; 100 bricks equals $1,000,000.

I find that donating money to causes I care about makes me feel rich... It doesn’t hv to be a huge amount. But it is a reminder of my discretionary income. I make sure to have a donation allocation in every monthly budget. I prefer to donate this manually - and to a different cause each month. Then I think consciously about the causes I’m researching, too... If I miss a month of donating, I find I tend to spend a lot more money wastefully & carelessly, & I actually feel a lot more poor!
