    Peter Greene wrote this song. The band was originally known as Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac, the three of them met when they were in John Mayalls Blues Breakers.

    I literally shed a tear when Peter, suffering from an LSD-induced mental breakdown, abandoned music altogether for almost a decade. After what seemed like an eternity, I snapped up his comeback album and the three after that. Then, on Jan. 12, 1998, Fleetwood Mac and Santana were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Against all the odds, Peter attended. Quoting from Peter's bio that I had the honour of writing for the AllMusic Guide online, "In a rare, perfect moment, Green jammed with fellow inductee Santana on "Black Magic Woman." Peter Green died in his sleep at his home on July 25, 2020; he was 73. He was one of the greats.

      @@maryhayes3177You’ve gotta give credit to Bob Welch as well. There was just something special about his very underrated era in the band (hard to believe he was in there for five albums!). I’d say it’s my favorite Fleetwood Mac era. But yeah, you can’t deny the raw power and soul of Fleetwood Mac’s first album. Everybody raves about Then Play On, and it’s not bad, but I’ve always thought that Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac was the best album that era of the band put out.

    I was there for this concert at the Boston Tea Party. They blew me away. It was the second time I saw them there. Peter Green was my favorite electric blues guitarist and I was lucky enough to see quite a few live, Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, John Mayell, Duane Allman, Muddy Waters, Albert King, and that's just the ones I saw play at The Boston Tea Party.
    BB King once said about Peter Green "the only living guitarist to make me sweat. He had the sweetest tone I’ve ever heard".

      @@dickcnormis1444 Actually a pretty funny thing happened to me at that concert. I had planned to got to a party after the concert in Lynn, MA, just a few miles north of Boston. Some of my friends in a band were throwing a party after a gig in a local bar.
      Well I saw these two pretty blondes standing near the refreshment stand apparently unaccompanied. I decided to go see if I could get them to come to the party. When I started to talk to them I realized they were British. They quickly, but very nicely and politely shot me down, saying they just came to see the band and were busy after the concert.
      A few years later I saw a picture of Christine McVie and realized she was one those blondes. I still didn't know who the other one was. It wasn't until a while later that I saw a picture of Jennifer Boyd and knew that she was the other blonde. Four months after this concert was when she married Mick Fleetwood.
      I'm glad McVie and Mick Fleetwood were on stage when that happened. Mick could be pretty wild and I wouldn't want to mess with him if he got PO'd. I'm sure those girls must have got hit on all the time in those days and thinking back, I'm surprised at how nice they were and not at all harsh or showing any anger or impatience in dealing with me. Anyway, a nice memory that became more interesting as time went on!

    Thanks for this choice, John Chu. I have the album from which this is taken but I've never seen this video.
    If I'm not mistaken, this is when they had three guitarists: the incomparable Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan but Green was so darned humble that he often allowed the others to play lead, as on this where it's Danny. And when you consider that he's only 20 here and joined the band when he was 18 then you get some idea of how highly he was rated.
    I really think that when you've heard the early Fleetwoods, you can never accept the later, more commercially successful group as being on a par with them.
    Peter Green's mental health deteriorated after the Munich party and I still hate the way the organisers behaved. It may have happened sooner or later anyway but they prematurely took a musical genius from us, although I don't discount his later work with the Splinter Group.

    Peter Green was given a guitar as a kid by his older brother who had asked for one for his birthday but could not get on with learning to play it, a couple of months after he had been given the guitar their father asked the brother to go to Peters room and tell him to turn down his radio as the music was too loud, when his brother opened the door he found Peter playing the guitar and not the radio, he was that good already and totally self taught. If had not been for his drink being spiked with LSD in Germany he could have become one of the greatest of all time for sure.

    • @briantaylor2.023
      @briantaylor2.023 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter actually willingly took lots of LSD, unfortunately, and was never spiked by anyone. The person you're thinking of is Syd Barrett---who willingly took SIGNIFICANTLY larger/more frequent doses of LSD than Peter Green did, but also often had his food and drinks spiked with LSD by the roommates he lived in an apartment with.

    • @briantaylor2.023
      @briantaylor2.023 ปีที่แล้ว

      In an interview Peter actually recalls willingly taking "LSD" (by that time, he had already been taking LSD for almost 2 years) with the people in the hippie commune in Munich, Germany and recording spiritual music with them. That night, he likely took DOM (also known as "STP")---which is like LSD in effects and duration but is significantly more potent than LSD. That shit can mess you up permanently VERY easily. Syd Barrett was also known to take "STP" from time-to-time.

    • @simply_psi
      @simply_psi ปีที่แล้ว

      @Brian Taylor 2.0 yes he did willing take LSD, but in an interview with Mick Fleetwood he describes a time in Germany where Peter Green is taken by unnamed wealthy Germans one night to a party at one of their houses during his time there they allegedly plied him with spiked drinks, in an experiment to see how well it made him play, Mick said that when the band finally tracked him down he was nothing a good way at all, theh managed to get him away from there and got him medical treatment, however, he was permanently damaged mentally by the incident and his performances became erratic and he would even miss gigs entirely, he eventually stopped playing guitar completely. There was a British documentary about him and a journalist teackednhim down to a small cottage, Peter was a sorry sight overweight, very dishevelled and his fingernails were at least 3 inches long, the journalist asked him if he would consider playing again and Peter replied no I can't because I would have to cut my nails and I can't do that. Later, having received further treatment, Peter did play again and formed The Peter Green Splinter Group he released a few good albums and toured a few times. So although his experience are similar to Syd's, it was different but he was definitely spiked, maybe in an even more sinister way, not sure what the interview with Mick is called but I'm sure you can find it is you search for it.

    • @briantaylor2.023
      @briantaylor2.023 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simply_psi Like I said, Peter knew he was taking LSD when he was at the hippie commune in Munich-regardless of whether it was mixed into drinks, taken as tabs, etc. Peter did not unintentionally become under the influence of LSD at that commune-he knew that he was taking LSD. “Spiked” usually means that a drug is mixed into someone’s food or drink without them knowing, thus leading to them becoming intoxicated from whatever substance without knowing why. Peter said that he was aware that he and everyone else in that hippie commune in Munich were taking LSD.

      If this was recorded in Boston it could be that Jeremy Spencer had already left by then, I thought he left in 1971, but I also know he did not tour America with the band, so I'm not sure if there is a mixup on the date of this performance and it is 1971 and not 1970, that would explain Jeremy's absence.

    Most people only hear the Santana version (which is FIRE), but this is so cool, Peter Green's finest moment. Yes, Carlos took his style from Greeny. I have been so lucky to have two older brothers who bought this all to me from the time I was born. I'd be sitting at the optimal position in front of the DeccaGram 'stereo' and they'd play something, me with my thumb in my mouth, and they would expect a sensible comment! After I proved myself music savvy, they would wake me up to sneak downstairs to watch Old Grey Whistle Test and we would have great times discussing music, then on to John Peel on Radio 1 on a Sunday evening.. Ahh, good times... Fleetwood Mac were a blues band at their formation, and this shows it.

    There really isn't much to say about Fleetwood Mac because that Peter Green wrote and composed almost all of the songs during this time. Back then they were the best white blues band ever. Without Peter Green they relegated themselves to just any pop band and the music became mainstream and monotonous (to my taste) . After many years of drug excess, Peter Green's solo career was followed by very good blues-oriented albums.. I'm glad to have seen him live on stage shortly before his death. One of the best live performances I've ever seen (heard). Best regards and merry x-mas @all from hamburg (germany)

    Peter left the band not long after this concert. Jeremy Spencer was still in the band but I don't think he played on this song. They went through a lot of lineup changes! Danny Kirwan joined in late 1968, then Peter left in 1970 and it was Danny and Jeremy for s short time, though Christie had been doing a lot of studio work with them on keys. She officially joined after they released Kiln House in 1970. Then Jeremy left in the middle of a tour and Peter came back to help them finish the tour. Bob Welch then replaced Jeremy and they did the Future Games and Bare Trees album with that lineup. Then Danny was kicked out of the band and replaced by Bob Weston. Dave Walker was also in the band for a short time, then he left. Weston then left after two albums and it was just Welch on guitar. Welch left and that was when they brought in Buckingham and Nicks. There were yet more changes later on in the 80's.

    3 leads 3 totally different sounds, all great in their own right. The Peter Green stuff is so influential in the early 70's, musicians knew talent even if the wider public did not. The Bob Welsh stuff is so spacy, try Hypnotized it will blow your mind. Then the top 40 sounds of the Buckingham - Nicks era, if they were somehow on stage together, other than Mick and John always being there and Christne for most of it, there would be no way to tie the 3 eras together.

    Don't sleep on Danny Kirwin. He and Green were seamless. A lot of people assume all the great guitar playing in The Mac is always Peter, but sometimes its Danny (Jeremy Spencer, channeling the spirit of Elmore James, is playing most of the slide licks).

    You should follow this up with a review of a cover. The Mick Fleetwood Band did this live a decade ago. Rick Vito takes the guitar and vocals. Has all the sound and feel of Peter Green. And for added enjoyment, there is a kick-ass B-3 that helps take this cover over the edge.

    in the first 2 min 30 secs of this vid the song has a definite Latin (i.e. South American) feel from the rhythm section. I think that is why Carlos chose to cover it.
    It is interesting that a lot of current USA popular music uses similar beats, yet it is hardly ever acknowledged.

    This is the original Fleetwood Mac, formed by Mick Fleetwood and Jon McVie. They, along with the great Peter Green, and the others, were a Blues Band. I liked the later version with the girls and Lindsey Buckingham, but it was a complete makeover from who they originally were. I doubt the casual Rock fan even knows who Peter Green was, and only know the mid 70s Fleetwood Mac. This early version was so damned good. Only us folks over 60 or so, know these guys.
    Thanks, Harri

      Fleetwood Mac was formed by Peter Green, not Mick Fleetwood or John McVie. In fact, John McVie *TECHNICALLY* isn’t even an original member of the band. Peter approached Mick and asked him to be the drummer for the band-which would go on to be “Fleetwood Mac”-he was creating. Peter also asked John McVie-who was still actively a member of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers-to join as their bassist, but he declined at first. They had a different guy (don’t remember his name) take the bassist spot under the agreement that he would have to leave if John McVie changed his mind and decided that he wanted to join the band. A few weeks later, John McVie changed his mind and replaced the other guy as Fleetwood Mac’s bassist.
