I think a lot of the issues with shockwave stem from the writers not being smart enough to write a character as smart as shockwave is supposed to be.

I really liked IDW Shockwave up to and including the whole Dark Cybertron event, though I will concede that Optimus' constant nagging to the "good" in Shockwave got old. Now when the whole Onyx Prime reveal occured far later in the comics and all the convolution that was entailed with that, I will agree with you totally.

The main issue with Shockwave is the Onyx Prime timetravel stuff. Swap that out for either leaving him dead or something to do with infraspace ghost stuff like Bumblebee and the rest is pretty alright. Optimus' attachment to him makes sense given what his IDW counterpart is like since he acts similarly with Megatron too. It ties into Optimus' character flaws. Shockwave is somewhat sympathetic in that his personality was drastically altered by outside sources and Optimus never really gave up hope that he'd find a way to bring Shockwave's old self back. Shockwave seems to still feel emotion but can't really perceive it the way he used to and you can see a bit of how he became the way he is after getting shadowplayed. Getting talked down by Optimus actually does get explained since the timeline singularity caused him to remember what he used to be like and put him in conflict with himself. It's the fact that they just had him be an evil timetravelling mastermind afterwards that was bad. His rivalry with Soundwave was interesting.

Hot Take: The twist of him orchestrating absolutely everything only works if you take into account the entire continuity of IDW's first continuity and put weight on all the history with the ores and such and even how he rebuilt Megatron. While it might not work for everyone, I gotta commend the writers for not making it an asspull compared to other "twists" I've read. That being said, it doesn't necessarily translate to a good story, but my impression was that this was a cumulation of all the continuity of IDW for better or for worse.
That being said, agreed that Windblade had it bad in the fanbase. I think it's better now.

i think this version of Shockwave's biggest problem is that he's very tell don't show and the fact that they dragged his character out beyond its reasonable conclusion
like they seriously couldn't have his character just end with his death in dark Cybertron or even just show his intelligence through actual planning and carful strategy

If Shockwaves story ended at the Dark Cybertron arch, I would have been happy, that was perfect. Actually I am just not a huge fan of the Unicron arch. The "It was Shockwave all along!!" Reveal was so dumb and convoluted. I loved Windblade during her single issue titles and during TAAO, but her suddenly being a bitch to Starscream and her yelling "All you Cybertronians suck!! And I gotta clean up your mess!!" And that bitchy eulogy at Optimus Primes funeral, made me not like her at the end. But I chalk that up to poor writing.
The Dark Cybertron is basically a Unicron story if you replace D-Void with Unicron, it even has the Matrix opening moment to stop it.
Honestly the only good part of the Unicron event in retrospect was Unicron himself and having an Optimus Death that actually felt meaningful (and had no jesus-ing). The rest of it... yeah naaahhh.
I have to admit, him calling out overlord's daddy issues was fun

I disagree! I liked his characterization in dark cybertron and how it culminated in him being defeated by bumblebee's sacrifice and megatron's honoring of him. For a brief bit at the end, shockwave understood the insanity of his actions and then he pretty died. but oh no he actually time traveled and became a prime and unicron stuff and ok yeah that was all mostly kinda bad. So maybe I don't disagree. huh.
The idea of good Shockwave, which was friend of Orion Pax ISN'T BAD. But IDW publishing cannot understand how works development of idea.

Thank you for making this, Shockwave is one of my favorite characters, especially IDW’s because of the Shockwave they TRY to convey, yet they couldn’t quite get it, you touched upon just about every problem with him I had.

I recently finished IDW and man, Shockwave being Onyx Prime really took me out of it. I agree with somethings on Dark Cybertron, but Onyx Prime was such a let down. And his plan didn't even make sense.
In Dark Cybertron, I did like how Optimus and Megatron tried getting through to him by becoming unpredictable. Megatron becoming an Autobot was a great start, and then him overcoming the empurata was such a great moment. So disappointing they kind of went back on this. They could've just brought him back through the black hole like Bumblebee except he would've been in a similar position to Megatron where he had to face his crimes, but as a changed bot.
I think this is your best video yet.
Oh, and he created the Hearts of Steel universe...
I think you're misunderstanding or flat-out ignoring some things to make your point.
The whole reason Optimus and Megatron are able to talk Shockwave down is because the time-drive plugged into his chest is unwittingly allowing him access to his previous emotional self that had some kind of morality. They don't just talk him down out of nowhere.
Shockwave as a master schemer who has labyrinthine plans is hardly something new or unexpected. IDW Shockwave may have taken it to an extreme, but his Dreamwave self also had a gun-hand in every pie. I wouldn't call him a Mary Sue, especially considering many of his plans go awry because of something illogical (Bludgeon being a psycho) or unexpected (Windblade effing with his plan for the Talisman) that comes up. Which is exactly Shockwave's weakness, as established in countless previous Transformers continuities and in his first appearance in IDW with Spotlight: Shockwave.
Also, Shockwave was at LEAST six million years old and then he was sent back to prehistory where he lived another TWELVE or so million years into present day. So yeah, he should probably be pretty omni-competent and knowledgeable. No one suspected he was Onyx Prime because he killed and replaced the guy BEFORE Onyx was known at-large. The real Onyx Prime was literally a nobody at the point Shockwave replaced him.
I can understand thinking everything Shockwave's done is a bit MUCH from a story-telling perspective. The "Shockwave Did It" meme has been with the fandom since the Dreamwave days, and his IDW-self went even further than that. However, I've never thought it hasn't been explained clearly or seemed out of character for Shockwave to be as hyper-competent as he is.

I actually like the Shockwave/Onyx Prime plot twist, it fixes many plot holes of the continuity and i like the fact he was a Senator that fighted the corruption and then became the corruption itself, which he calls "Logic". I respect your opinion and good video btw.

Honestly, his story should've ended with Dark Cybertron IMO. Badassery aside, IDW 2005 Shockwave is even more of a Mary Sue than Rung.

Love the video! It's great to see some critiques of the IDW. Cuz personally, I loved it, it was fun and a good read, but the endings and all the conflict just seemed to be solved so...easy. Especially with the end of the IDW as a whole. Optimus hugging the villain to make him stop is straight up wack. It'd be nice for them to have a big villain not be redeemed, and for them to just beat them up or put them away like they did to the other smaller(and less evil) villains like Getaway or Prowl.
Honestly I appreciate that this was just a video outlining slightly overlooked aspects of shockwave rather than just shitting on the character

i never read about shockwave after dark cybertron so i never knew about the onyx prime stuff so honestly i was always just a fan of shockwave before dark cybertron but pretty cool video nonetheless and i can see myself agreeing with it

Apparently the whole Dark Cybertron incident created a time clone of Shockwave and sent that time clone into the prime tribe age or something which ended up with him rewriting all of Cybertronian history? At least that's what I heard.

I think I may have the answer to your analysis:
It is a consistent character trait that Optimus (and frankly any good guy like say Captain America and Bucky) will try to save a friend who's been turned evil because of alterior motives by the bad guy and so it is proper that he the hero who believes in redemption will try to save him. Now if you are an IDW writer this is logical but what isn't logical is giving him the clone wars treatment and have him be the separatists or savage oppress where he was sort of a blunt written character to complement something or be a sort of filler bad guy and that's horrible! This is shockwave! The guys a super genius robot! You should be taking the Machiavelli approach to him and giving him his own side stories and I think there in lays the problems with him.
He was given time to develop sure but he certainly was shoehoisted into every major storyline any time they ran out of bad guys and it just got fucking old! With that kind of character you have to take the old wrestling approach which is, fake injury used has cover for real irl surgery he needs, will be out for X amount of months and then BAM! Comes back like a fucking hero or villain to cheers or boos of the audience at the last minute.
Unfortunately that's not what we got here and it's sad IDW shockwave whole cool is sorta ham fisted and heavy handed in the way that he was written and it's a sad feature sometimes with these properties.
I was willing to put up with him, then the Onyx Prime stuff happened and I just threw my hands up saying “ok” in a defeated tone.

I love IDW Shockwave and think he is the best incarnation of the character! If you don't like him that's fine but I think you could go into a bit more detail in this video. It feels like you are just saying he sucks because he is stupid over and over. Like bring up some more examples and stories that back up your reasoning.

Windblade had no character development though. All she ever did was waffle on whether she was cunning enough to go toe to toe with Starscream or a naive and innocent good girl for like 30 issues while never actually having to cross any lines herself.

I love IDW Soundwave. He's the only one that truly committed to the Decepticon original cause and held to it until his end. I may be wrong but I thought that Megatron DID have Rumble and Frenzy reconstructed into his deployers in Megatron Origins maybe? They were two of Megs' fellow miners and some of his first followers so he eventually just partnered them with Soundwave. They just weren't originally partnered with him like Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, and Ravage were.

Wow… this Shockwave is so… illogical….
As many have pointed out before, I liked Shockwave up till he collapsed into a black hole. His plot and plan had been laid out over millions of years, he had setbacks but he managed to improvise around them. He had a lofty goal that I could understand him thinking to be in the right. Optimus constantly believing there was some good in him, was mostly a flaw with Optimus, not with Shockwave. Megatron kept him around because he found him useful and he hid his traitorous notions better than Starscream.
But when he came back... Yeah I gotta say that IDW Shockwave became a bigger Gary Stue than Thunderclash. He made Aizen from Bleach look believable.

And why do we even like IDW comics on transformers? Have you ever wondered? I thought about it once and realized... We love them for their ideas. Only for ideas, not for the implementation of these ideas. They had a lot of interesting innovations, references, new and old characters, but... They lost everything. literally everything, they forgot how to juggle characters for the second phase of their comics. It's sad, because, it turns out, we overestimated them. At one time, we needed new innovative transformers so much, different from Bay's films, that we were ready to take anything, as long as it respected the original source a little more than Michael-blow-everything-to-hell Bay. But IDW didn't really respect the original source, they wrote fan fiction under the official trademark. It seems sad to me.
I just hate the whole "Onyx was Shockwave" thing. It completely undoes the impact of his sacrifice and he behaves as if it never happened afterwards. He "died" as Senator Shockwave but immediately reverted into regular Shockwave afterwards, going straight into even more all-encompassing schemes. It just feels like borderline character assassination to me, and it didn't need to happen considering his story was finished with Dark Cybertron.
Also turbo-genius Shockwave, engineer of Cybertronian history, _not_ expecting the Maximals to turn against him when he revealed that Onyx Prime was nothing more than a bit of trolling is embarrassingly bad writing that makes Shockwave seem like a complete idiot.

I mean, that's most the comic right there. Love it to death, but the cast can be so hella dumb. Like... Rodimus broke the Matrix. Bumblebee lost Cybertron to Starscream. Optimus has a midlife crisis through most of it. The cast is pretty dumb, and I love it. (Save for Megatron, Soundwave, and Ultra Magnus, those guys had more then one brain cell sometimes.]

The thing is, a real-world supercomputer with AI could plan exactly what Shockwave attempts after coming up enough simulations with their respective probabilities. Shockwave is not a human but a robot, after all. The interesting background is that what he actually tried in IDW has basis in the origin of supermassive Black Holes, and his concern over an impending Energon crisis, the death of the Cybertronian race, and the looming Extinction level event led to the conclusion that he must "reboot" the universe to solve these problems. His ultimate plan was to replace everybody in the universe with copies of himself.

honestly, while I don't like Windblade at all, it's less because of *who* she is and more because of Hasbro's insistence upon artificially inflating her popularity and pretty much making her the main character of whatever she's in.
I *also* hated IDW's version of the events surrounding the Thirteen-INCLUDING the Thirteen themselves-and your deconstruction of Shockwave makes me hate it even more.
