Songs of Sailor and Sea
By Robert W. Smith
Item: 00-BD9750
Series: Belwin Symphonic Band
Level: 4.5
Songs of Sailor and Sea celebrates man's eternal fascination with the sea and the centuries of seamen who have battled its powerful waves and mysterious depths. Commissioned by the United States Navy Band, this three-movement work depicts shipboard life with a 'Sea Chanty,' creatures of the sea with 'Whale Song,' and finally, the American Clipper Ships with 'Racing the Yankee Clipper.' Expanded percussion richly enhances this dramatically descriptive musical narrative. This is a major contribution to the concert band repertoire!

I’m so proud to say that I was
his student,and learned under
him for seven years.
R.I.P. Mr.Robert W.Smith.
We will never forget you.
I played at one time in orchestra I played the 🥁,and then in high school I played the bass clarinet and got to experience both sides of this music 🎵 I really really enjoyed the time I had with Mr. Robert W Smith. What a great composer, what a wonderful musician, what a man he was. I will always listen and remember the time I had.the fun and joyous moments in music seem like a lifetime ago but we can always re visit and re play what we love best! ❤❤
It is unfortunate that he passed away yesterday, but it's nice to see that his music will live on for years to come
I like how at 6:40 on the second page it labels the hns as tpts.
Love this piece! Some parts remind me a lot of Into the Storm. My school did a marching show with Into the Storm a few years back, and it was pretty awesome.
My director mentioned wanting to use this as a marching band show at some point... I want to still be in school whenever he does it. If not, I'm seeing that show lol
Me Too! I Played This My Senior Year After Meeting Robert W. Smith Many Years Ago.
Jarrod Roberts-ThePianoMan Wow! That must have been an incredible experience. I’d love to meet him.

Yeah Me Too! This Is One of My ALL TIME Favorite Pieces By Robert W. Smith. Robert W. Smith Is A Very Good Friend Of Mine & My Dad. I had the opportunity to meet him at one of my schools when he guest conducted this piece and gave me an autographed score of this. We played this my senior year in high school in which I played the piano part and BOY!!! It was awesome and the adjudicators gave us A Superior Rating for it.
We did a full level 6 program my senior year and this was the cherry on top, learning this song was a task but we ended up getting gold and winning a Hershey competition with this song so it holds a special place in my heart. By far one of my favorite pieces
I played clarient 2 for this. IT WAS SO FUN! It was so upbeat and I love everything about it! It was jazzy to me and I couldn't help but dance in my seat a little when the groovy parts came on! I wanna play this with a full band again. It sounds amazing.
I stumbled upon this and was able to sing along with it all. I haven’t heard it since about 2001 and still remember it!
Finally the full version
Very fun piece! I was confused when the horn line said "tpts" at 122, but I figured it out :)
Daniel FHorn I saw that too and was confused until the correction on the next page.
So, what does that mean?
Edit: nvm
