You have to be a pretty strong person, regardless of ethnicity, to act in such a movie. And the brutal portrayal... man. This is honesty in it's ugliest form. Outstanding movie!
To play a character in movies like this must be incredibly difficult. Honestly white and black. I give them much respect for bringing this to the screen.
One of the most magnificent films ever made. It captures the cruelty of American slavery better than any film that I am aware of. A truly heartbreaking masterpiece.
Beautiful movie but even this film is rated G compared to the reality of slavery. My grandfather told me stories his grandfather told him and it terrifies me til this day. Imagine having your infants taking from your home and feed to gators in the bayou. May my ancestors spirit continue to live on. I live on with you all you in my heart.
Raping of men, women, and children. Burning, beheading, torturing, tarring, hanging, drowning, and more of slaves. Stripping slaves from their religion, family, children, nursing babies, and their freedom and dignity. We as Black people today, still are affected emotionally, psychologically, physically, and financially. We will never forget!
That’s my same argument on holocaust films and, although some are done well, it cannot capture the horrors of Treblinka or Sobibór. If you haven’t watched it, watch Shoah. Unlike other projects about the holocaust, this film centered on the survivors and has no music as you’re listening to their stories. Although the film is five hours long, it holds your attention for the entire time.
This was a very powerful story and it was done extremely well by the cast and crew. It took me several times to watch because it was agonizing to think people were treated this way. I had to keep stopping when I got too worked up. Very very well done.
the end scene when Solomen starred into the camera, that was some very, very powerful acting. i really could see 12 years of suffering in his face. just an all around timeless classic created here.
ive watched this movie about 20 times. its the only real measure of a timeless and excellent film; that it can be watched and rewatched again and again sometimes each viewing being its own experience. this film deserved its clean up at the Oscars in 2014 and is within my top 20 films all time.
Just notice how the beginning of the story there’s a gazebo and the story ends with a gazebo - love how the beginning and end tied together is such subtle ways
Never cried so hard over a movie. The acting alone was incredible. His book is kinda difficult to read because of the difference in how they spoke back then but definitely worth the read. I learned things i never knew about slavery in his book/movie
This film is one those few essential movies that I feel everyone should watch at some point... and at the same time it's so difficult go watch, because of the nature of the era and events it reflects. I can only imagine the extreme challenge for the actors and crew involved in these kinds of productions, to portray these kinds of historical atrocities in a respectful & truthful way, knowing the many stories of historical suffering that lie behind the scenes 😔
This is an amazing movie. I just bought it but I’ve seen it so many times. I’ll never understand the heartlessness of some people. When I was telling my coworkers about it, one guy said he was going to watch. When he came to work the next day he said he hated it and thought Patsy’s whipping scene was funny. I couldn’t believe it. Something so profound and powerful…
The audiobook version of Solomon Northup's novel is available for free here on TH-cam. Absolutely worth the listen! He wrote so eloquently that one cannot help but to be fully immersed and spellbound within minutes.
It must have taken a tremendous toll on all the actors - especially the ones playing the most evil characters - to have brought this book to life on screen. A film so horrifying that I could only watch it once. And people want to prevent kids from knowing this happened?
I took my 10 yr old son to watch this at the movies when it featured and I almost left the theatre several times. I knew it was important for him to not only hear real life historical facts of slavery but to see it portrayed on film, so I stayed. It was very hard to watch and I cried with anger and vengeance. This movie was remarkably directed. When the credits rolled, I couldn't wait to get out for some fresh air because I felt suffocated. Never forget, never forget, and never forget.
Great movie...only thing wrong was that slaves did not speak proper english or used complex words due to not being taught to write or speak gramatically correct...listen to audios of old former slaves
It is so true" God ways and thoughts are not mans". God allows all this to take place. In this book this man was brave and humble. However, God did deliver his people out of the hand of the blue eye devil and his evil. White men alway use the Bible to up hold their evil. Delivered God delivered. The blue eye devil himself was the white master of slavery.
After Roots, this is the most painful Slavery film to watch😢😢😢I love the end that he was finally free but hate that these cruel 😢people they did this to him never got punished.
There is a lot of British poc talent, they just get ignored too much because Britain do be kinda racist sometimes. I'm a white Brit. I'm always so happy when poc talent gets noticed by America and other countries because we don't do it enough ourselves.
They gave the part to an actor instead of giving it to a actual black man whose great grandparents were slaves No they gave it to a Nigerian who cant even relate just act
@J. Daniels I'm Nigerian. During the period of slave trade, well over 3.5 million slaves were shipped from Nigeria to the Americas. Most of them included Yorubas and Igbos (that's where Chiwetel's from).
He did a great job, but I feel your pain. On a positive note, the two main Caucasian leads (and others) were also from Europe. Since McQueen lives and started in the U.K, he already had strong working ties and familiarity with the European actors you see in the film. Especially Michael (Master Epps’s character).
I’m not saying he’s lying, I’m just saying I can’t recall every detail from yesterday…… I also couldn’t last 12 years as a slave let alone a free man in slavery. However I’m not one of those people who say, I would kill someone for such atrocities, actually I would, but that individual would be yours truly. 💯🫡

This not just a story. It's a testament.

This movie is a masterpiece, not just for its acting, writing, directing and film locations but the storytelling alone
In reading the book I found Solomon to not only be an amazing storyteller but an exceptionally intelligent person.
This was a very powerful story and it was done extremely well by the cast and crew. It took me several times to watch because it was agonizing to think people were treated this way. I had to keep stopping when I got too worked up. Very very well done.
Easily a contender for the best film of the 2010s and probably one of the best films ever made
the end scene when Solomen starred into the camera, that was some very, very powerful acting. i really could see 12 years of suffering in his face. just an all around timeless classic created here.

A devastating yet beautifully written testimony.

I cried so hard when watching this
This was such an exceptional movie. I cried at the end. Lupita Nyong'o was a scene stealer.

The book is very good. It's takes you in and can read in a single sitting.
Amazing. Even the story behind the story.

My grandma used to say : "don't go with strangers"! I can't stop thinking - if HE wouldn't have went with those 2 men....

This should be free to watch on YT by now.
Of one thing you can be sure. It is this. You will loathe whatever character Paul Dano plays.
Tibets was so much more of a monstrous POS to Platt (Solomon) in his book. It was horrifyingly sad.
The best story and film ever
Wonderful movie
I heard that arab slave trade was even more brutal. Imagine movie about that?
you have the same LOOK ON YOUR FACE as Prince Wuilliam
I would have like to hear the whole story, what happened in his later years or when what happened after he wrote his memoirs
GREATNESS
Hey all the credit doesn’t just go to the actors that guy holding the tray of water cups behind camera is serious
Great movie...only thing wrong was that slaves did not speak proper english or used complex words due to not being taught to write or speak gramatically correct...listen to audios of old former slaves
Steve Mc Queen is a way better filmmaker than Spike Lee. Lee's films are so sexist.
Shut up
Guess you've never seen Malcolm X, Mo Betta Blues, Crooklyn, Inside Man, Da 5 Bloods, He Got Game, Clockers, DTRT, and School Daze.
It is so true" God ways and thoughts are not mans". God allows all this to take place. In this book this man was brave and humble. So it seems Paul Dano was a little TOO good at playing his scenes! The meanness & cruelty just came NATURALLY to him! Scary...
👀BROOOOOO!!!
After watching the film I really thought behind the scenes they’re really that racist
After Roots, this is the most painful Slavery film to watch😢😢😢I love the end that he was finally free but hate that these cruel 😢people they did this to him never got punished.
Ur acting
I know ur Nephilim
Why all those actors be british
There is a lot of British poc talent, they just get ignored too much because Britain do be kinda racist sometimes. I'm a white Brit. I'm always so happy when poc talent gets noticed by America and other countries because we don't do it enough ourselves.
They gave the part to an actor instead of giving it to a actual black man whose great grandparents were slaves No they gave it to a Nigerian who cant even relate just act
yea that’s the point of being a “actor” you act
''Oh no! The actors are acting! The horror!''

Amazing story terrible but so great when he found freedom shameful times.
