  • See AEC Mercury lorries at work on the construction of the A12 Chelmsford by-pass near the juction of the A130 back in 1986. They were only used off road and were somewhat rough & ready, definatly not road legal! If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

These AEC tippers came from.the M25 build all ex Wimpey there was some parked up in a yard and there's been one restored back as new in her original Wimpey livery don't know if any are still there .I drove a Ford D series V8 6 wheel tipper but she was totally finished after a few months on site work those AEC tippers were the toughest of the tough so were the drivers ....great post thanks

Just discovered this one. The best one in my opinion after that ending!
Can't believe a Mercedes V series came to the party. I always thought their V6 engine note was very similar to the big AEC inline six diesels and here was a direct comparison that confirms it!

I was at the local comprehensive school and my school bus journey took me past this construction site everyday. The mid Essex gravel and tmc lorries used to thunder along the local road to a specially opened gravel pit near where I lived. I remember seeing lots of Renault 4 vans being used for communication vehicles around the site. (one can be seen in the video) Cementation construction was the company in overall charge of this stretch of road, hence the concrete carriageway. When I was studying construction at Colchester Institute a few years later one of my lecturers gave a slide show of a site visit they did during construction showing these big battered dump trucks ploughing their trade. Whilst on site my lecturer witnessed one of these trucks backing too far and falling in a big hole. Once they had pulled the driver out, since these vehicles were life expired, they couldn't be bothered to recover it so we were told they buried it instead. So if the story I was told as a student is correct somewhere under the A12 Chelmsford bypass is buried one of those massive old dump trucks!

I remember these days out well, teking alongside the half built A12 Chelmsford By-Pass to film them. This is the second By-pass, the first one got so bust it was replaced by this one, although it's still busy around the Army & Navy round-a-bout.

They wern't street legal but they kept working away, we built solid vehicles back in the day before computer chips got in the way and shut things down if they're not happy! The vehicles moved between jobs on trade plates. I'm sure i have some others at work at Eltham on the A2 relief road that was built at the same time.

    • @tl50camiva

They were on the M25 before this and the Braintree by-pass after here. They used a low loader to move them 2 at a time.
Trade Plates might have been pushing it a bit! :)
