I started wearing a helmet because one semester during college, I witnessed my friend recover from a concussion she had over the summer from hitting her head against a car (not skateboarding related). Along with watching how painful and tedious the recovery was, I saw her personality change, and this experience encouraged me to start wearing a helmet to avoid head injuries and their consequences. Also thank you for the cooling sleeve suggestion, I'm going to look into those :o
Yeah, a lot of my family works in health related fields, and I've seen a lot of head injuries. Concussions are serious, especially in a sport like skating where you could get multiple ones. I hope your friend made a full recovery! And I hope you like the cooling sleeves if you get them! :D
Hip pads (aka impact shorts) have made learning to skate so much more sustainable for me. Saved me from deep bruises so many times. Never get on my board without them. Great video! 😌
I wear a helmet all the time (thank you for the inspiration, Andy Anderson!) but change out other pieces depending on what I'm doing. When cruising I like to also wear fingerless weightlifting gloves for a minimal bit of extra protection and warmth. When practicing tricks I go for wrist guards and elbow pads. Those parts of my body seem to be my most common points of contact with the concrete.
Yes! Recently, I also have done a lot more customizing based on how I want to skate that day. But, the helmet is the non-neogotiable 💪 Always grateful to Andy for being proof that "you can wear a helmet and skate at the same time". haha 🙏
ah, that's awesome! Welcome back to skateboarding! Old bones therapy also makes some shin guards too. I haven't tried them yet, but I'm interested lol as a less bulky alternative!
My only non-negotiable is wrist guards. I do wear other pieces depending on what and where I'm skating, but I'll never sprain my wrist again. I need my hands for all my work and hobbies. Also I love your reason for wearing gear. Having your progress interrupted by an injury is more painful than the slams.
Love the gear breakdown! also so glad the stigma of skaters wearing helmets has reduced since Andy Anderson, George Poulos and other started addressing the topic. When I got back into skating I went out fully padded up with black pads, wearing all black and a black face mask (because covid) and even though I looked liked some S.W.A.T or video game NPC, I've never felt safer skating 😅😅😅 Big fan of the Triple 8 fingerless wrist guards! Keep up the awesome work Sarah!
I'm also really stoked on that too. There should never be a stigma and doing something to protect your health. Glad it's changing! And same! I was so suited up, especially with the freestyle shinguards that cover the whole shin and calf. Glad you enjoyed the gear breakdown 😃
Yes! They're great. They aren't hard like a regular shin guard. But they saved me from tons of bruises and were perfect for practicing like the flamingo, which bruises the back of the calf! :D
Yeah, it's surprising how much of a difference a simple pair of gloves makes! I have some from the same brand, but with some plastic protection, fairly minimalistic, at the bottom to allow for some (mild) gliding over the pavement without ripping open my hand palm. Definitely great for the rougher streets I skate. It's not going to protect against impact injury, but then again nothing really does when you try to take on the impact straight on, instead of rolling out of a fall. I still have to get a decent enough pair of knee protectors, but not ready yet to spend $80-100 on them. And they do have to be good enough to properly slide down in a mini ramp, so I can't really go cheap.
I also think that saving up for a good pair of knee pads is worth it. I imagine they are a lot more comfortable to use too. The cheap ones never really sit right and feel good, but they are better than not having any for me. 🙌
Found you through Skate or Die video. Watched the 'Worst advice for beginners" video & I subbed straight away. I'm a beginner & I'm 50, so hopefully you can teach this old dog some new tricks.
Oh? Is that a TH-cam channel? Well, I'm glad you liked that video so much! I know it's not popular advice, but I truly believe in it💪 Hope you can get a lot of value out of my content. Welcome to skateboarding 🙋♀️
I love your different video styles. I need shin guards. I got a 2 pack of Old Bones ankle braces that have helped a lot. I've rolled both ankles this summer and keep re rolling them stepping into gaps in the warehouse I work in. The brace helps so much on my back foot because just pushing down the tail was making it sore. I've started always wearing knee pads and a helmet too. My helmet has never taken a hit but my knee pads have saved me more than once. My guitar teacher got a traumatic brain injury skateboarding drunk without a helmet and she's got memory issues now. So I really want to protect my head.
Ronnie Creager has a company called "etcetera" that makes an amazing ankle brace that is a lil more solid than the old bones ones. If you ever need something with a lil more support I'd highly suggest those
Good to see the helmet stigma slowly disappearing. My helmet is also the one protective gear that is non-negotiable. Ear plugs, though, don't they just mess with your balance? I use them to sleep and I have to take them off if I go to the toilet. It feels a little bit funky otherwise.
Yeah, that stigma really needs to go so we can all just make that choice for ourselves without any social pressure. 💪 Oh really? They didn't mess with my balance. They were just soft foam ones that muffled the sound. They seriously saved me while skating in the basement.
Shin guards have been on my buy list for a while now. I always get shinners. When I cruise to work I use nothing but otherwise I always have wristguards and elbow pads. I’d wear my helmet more but I sweat like a burst water baloon when I get going so it doesn’t see as much action as it should.
I like the FP Painkiller socks with shin protection, however to be fair those do not cover a good enough area to really prevent all shinners. It's probably a good idea to get some cheap soccer shin guards and rely on those instead indeed. Plenty of options and seems worth it. :) It's funny you mention that about the helmet by the way. I know I should wear it more often, but I don't really like it getting hot and sweaty either. It does give me the confidence to try anything on a rail though.
Haha I get the sweaty head thing. But honestly, my head gets sweaty without it, even though less. A headband/sweatband is actually on my to buy list next to try! See if that helps 😃
ah yes! The FP Painkiller socks were what I was thinking of when I said "skateboard socks" but couldn't remember what they were called! I'll have to add them to the description for anyone who wants to check those out. Thanks! :D
@@SarahParkMatott Yeah it really is just an excuse. There's no actual really valid reason to be toying with your well being. It's a trade off for me but if the day ever comes where I slam my noggin' I'm sure I'll regret not having it on regardless of any inconvenience saved. As for sweat/headband I have two colourful ones from Nike that I wear at times that make me look like a 80s Björn Borg. Very fashionable especially the way it can make you hair balloon out on top xD! Nah but seriously I dig the look.
Sarah, love your vids, just subbed. If you are using Adobe Premier pro to edit, make sure your audio is up to -6db or so. You are always SOOO quiet. Keep rocking :)
Love the pouring of water opening haha. Great video! One more thing worth mentioning are the fp insoles I think! It's easy to forget I'm even wearing them but they definitely made a big difference. Before my feet would be sore after every session but the insoles absorb a lot of shock and vibration so I never get that any more.
When I started my skateboarding I had no experience n no protection day 3 I broke my elbow ... Then I brought knee pads elbow pads wrist gards and helmet ... You bones are different when you're in late 20s trust me you'll break a part like a lego if you don't know how to fall and without safety gear. Some people think it's not cool but trust me being dead is also not cool.
I skined the palm of my hand up three times while learning shuv its which I learned largely thanks to you, I'm definitely gonna get some gloves before I start practicing them rolling.
I absolutely rate sun sleeves. I wear them all the time while diving. Funnily enough I was trying to get another pair yesterday after seeing you mention them in a previous video comment. No luck at the camping shop, but I'll definitely check out my Asian grocer next :D Also, earplugs are sooo under rated. I wore them all the time when practicing Ollie's in my garage, and still wear them when attempting rail or fingerflip tricks. That slap of the board when you land upsidedown is sooo loud! I really love that you're wearing your helmet more. (I had noticed it's more regular appearance) it's too important not to wear aanndd it makes such a positive impact on the people surrounding you when they see someone else wear one #helmetgang
Yes! They are so under-rated! I love them. Hope you can find them at your local Asian grocer. Probably can! They're a lot more popular in Asia than they are here. And I know! Landing on wheels is loud enough, but that slap upside down was such an eardrum killer! I couldn't skate at all until I found the earplugs. It was awful haha And of course. I think it made a permanent appearance since like the end of winter. I liked the helmet and always wore it at the park, I just needed to commit all or nothing. And I did! 💪 I also think it's important that more people wear them, even if just to make parks and skateboarding a place where you can feel comfortable making the choice without worrying about social pressures.
I used to find it tedious and a little embarrasing to always ride around with my helmet, but then I had my son paint on it with markers and now it looks great so now I wear it every time. It is not ethically defensible really to skate without a helmet I think, because if you do get a concussion you not only risk damaging your own head - you also take a hospital bed and staff that would perhaps be needed for something else (esp. in covid times) with your highly preventable injury :) and I cannot risk my health when I have kids depending on me either. Otherwise I wear wrist guards because I'm afraid to break my wrists even tho I never injured them before! I noticed after wearing them and falling some times that the plastic bit in the palm was totally scratched up, which means my palms would be totally scratched up had I not had them. Also thank you for the video, you always have such well paced, rehearsed and edited videos, with helpful timestamps and all! Very neat.
That's such a cute idea to have your son paint on it! Stickering it up would also be fun, I bet. Thinking about it now 🤔 But you make good points. Not all injuries are preventable, but I like to prevent what I can, whether I look cool or not haha It's good for both me and those around me. And thank you so much! I'm trying to learn what I can and make better videos as I go. And love the timestamps to let people skip around to the parts they find valuable :D Glad you like it.
What made you choose gloves over wristguards? Wristguards have been a lifesaver for me, I've learnt to fall while sliding my wrist. Is it because of freestyle tricks?
The gloves do add extra protection for freestyle tricks, like keeping my fingerprints. But, I just find gloves more comfortable. They are just enough protection for me when I fall, so I haven't really thought about switching to wrist guards, although, I probably will if I learn other styles like transition where I might want the extra protection and sliding :D
You are getting so good at editing! So clean! I am also a firm believer in wearing a helmet. Coming from a ski/snowboard background everyone wears a helmet, it is very rare to see someone without a helmet. But one major plus of wearing a helmet on the slops is it helps keep your body so warm. That does not translate well to skating. When I first started skating I was determined to protect my head. As things got hotter I really struggles with wearing a helmet. Is there any helmet recommendations that are not quite so hot? Thanks 😁
Thanks Laura! I am definitely trying to make the editing a little more interesting 😃 And oh yea...I mean, the hot head thing is definitely uncomfortable. I don't know any helmets that are cool. It's hard to keep hot plastic and thick foam from being so insulating. But, I wonder if having a white helmet might help a bit to make it a least a little less sun absorbent!
Found your safety video! Thank you so much for sharing! (Not sure how to remove a comment, but I asked this very same question a few minutes ago on your earlier tutorial vid😅)
To me, wrist guard (instead of gloves) is a must have. I’m a beginner and I easily fall, and in most cases my hand would try to grab onto something or push the ground.
One thing I keep struggling tho is the pain in the "palm of my feet" from tension. It is especially serious after footwork practices and at one point even got so serious that I have a bump of inflated muscles. I haven't found the solution yet, and I guess the long-term answer is to keep practicing, take good rests, and make my muscles stronger. For now, I get by with massaging my feet. I also ordered massage sandals and a supportive brace just for that part of my feet, hope those would help. It would be amazing if you can give me some advice on this problem, thank you Sarah :)
Maybe it's because I haven't started many advanced tricks, but so far I don't see shin guard having any protective functions. However, when I use the fit guy shin guard, it helps support my lower legs, and some people say that it helps pogo. And since I haven't gone that far as of doing pogos, and I don't want to get all sweaty for a slightly more supported feeling, I doubt shin guard really helps. Can you list out some actions that may cause shinners? So that I can decide whether I should keep it. Thanks, love your channel!
Really? I get at least 3 shinners every time I don't wear my shin guards. Shove its, pop shove its, any trick where the board rotates really. Often get them when I miss my landing, hit the tail and the board bounces up into my shin. I've gotten them doing smoothies and some footwork when the board rotated around and gives me a chop. I got a shinner falling on an obstacle haha Shin guards were so important for no handed truckstand recently too. If I skate without my shin guards I come home with shinners. Every single time 😂😭 They aren't perfect for sure. But, they do reduce the number. I suppose if you aren't getting shinners, you don't' need them. You can always start wearing them later if you notice you're getting them! :)
Humbling to see you fall in the beginning haha. Nice editing in this vid. Can't say I've ever been hit in the shins. The first gear I got was Helmet and Wrist Guards (since I play guitar and don't want a damaged wrist.) The helmet has saved me like 3+ times. One time I felt like I could be cool and not where a helmet but on that same day I fell on the back of my head while going down a bank, after that I make sure to always wear one. I damaged my left wrist failing to drop in, but luckily I think the wrist guard helped it from being too serious. One time I was in the car park at work and I fell over and scraped my elbow pretty badly, so I was like that's it, I'm getting elbow pads. Now I'm starting to do more transition and I decided to get some knee pads too haha.
haha thanks! I'm glad you liked the editing. I tried to make it more fun lol But oh...just wait. I don't think any of us can skate for too long without getting a shinner. It's part of skating 😂 But glad you're getting the gear that you need. Gotta say that knee pads are a lifesaver for transition. Give you the confidence to slide around 💪
You should try footprint brand painkiller socks. They have the fp non Newtonian gel pads so they are soft when you skate but still protect from any shinners and also have lil pads over the ankle bone. Their insoles are also life-changing, I couldn't skate at my age without those insoles
Yes, those were the "special skate socks" I mentioned. I had heard about them, but couldn't find the name while looking. Someone was nice enough to link them already. I feel like they'd be a perfect combination with the actual shin guards. Sadly, the socks don't really come in anything close to my size that I can find. Just small and large mens sizes, where even the small is two sizes too big 😂 I like the FP insoles too though. Had them in my previous shoes!
@@SarahParkMatott if you call the shop that distributes fp, it's called concrete visionary, I'd be willing to bet they can find a pair that will fit you if it exists. They've been really cool with me in the past
I got my ankle twisted and fractured in June. Got surgery to screw 8 nails on my broken fibula. Just got back on board last week but I found I have lost so many tricks. On top of that, I always feel uncomfortable on the board. Do you have any tips to protect ankle? I rolled it landing FS180.
Of course strength and mobility exercises, although you might be doing some similar stuff if you're in physical therapy right now. But, there are also ankle guards that help to limit sudden movements. Check the other comments, some people mentioned them 💪
I've been using only wrist pads because when I started skating I would always fall over my wrists, but since now after 2 months skateboarding I finally got the courage to do ollies and skate on the street I guess I should get a helmet
I wear those cooling sleeves when I'm sailing, and a Columbia long sleeve shirt that deflects the sun. They make a world of difference when you're under the sun 🌞
i never had protection gear. My injuries: broken shinnbone, the upprr part slipped under my kneepad (2004), 2 broken ribs (2006), about 5 concussions, endless abrasions and a lot of buises and some other stuff. From 2012 to 2028 no injuries no injuries because no skating. Sinc last year: Alot of aching. Sorry that i made no video last time. I have problems with my shoulders (calcification) and that shit hurts. but hey, i lost 25 kilos and so i am feom 120 down on 95 kilos.
I use to skate without any protections, but since I have decided to drop my first quarter soon and as I don’t want to die 😂… here I am. PS nice pronunciation in Korean!
I love that you use soccer shin guards!! I am 50 and have been skating since the 70's and use shin guards for the exact same reason. They have helped save my legs countless times. So glad you are recommending this. Your videos are great btw 😊🛹🌞👍
I seriously love my shinguards. They are probably the second favorite item for me! Glad I'm not alone in using them 💪 And thank you! I'm stoked you're enjoying the videos.

Found your safety video! Thank you so much for sharing! (Not sure how to remove a comment, but I asked this very same question a few minutes ago on your earlier tutorial vid😅)
haha no problem 😂
@@SarahParkMatott 🤣That makes sense, maybe I just didn’t practice enough tricks to need it. Thanks for the advice!
I wear a lot of that. Where I live it's pretty hot in the summer. I tend to get sweat in my eyes so l wear a head bandana.
Yeah, a bandana is a good idea. I've also thought about getting an actual headband 🤔
It's part of skating 😂
But glad you're getting the gear that you need.
Hi Sarah! I also protect my heart from Fallin! 🙂 it hurts more than skating😊
By the way youve got nice gear. Skate safe dear
Thank you! You too!🙌
I got my ankle twisted and fractured in June.
Check the other comments, some people mentioned them 💪
@@SarahParkMatott thank u so much!
I've been using only wrist pads because when I started skating I would always fall over my wrists, but since now after 2 months skateboarding I finally got the courage to do ollies and skate on the street I guess I should get a helmet
I would definitely recommend a helmet 🙋♀️ 😃
I wear a helmet and wrist pads when I do tricks... The one time I didn't wear my wrist pad I broke my wrist trying to do a poop shuv-it. Feels bad....
ok, you have a fan here. now it's official xD
I use to skate without any protections, but since I have decided to drop my first quarter soon and as I don’t want to die 😂… here I am. PS nice pronunciation in Korean!
Yes, let's stay safe 🙏 and haha thanks 💪
Always cool to see a female skater 😎 good stuff!!
👍👍👍
pad up😁👍

HMart is the best
HMart is my favorite place 🥰
Plain water B-roll this time :)
haha I'm trying to mix it up 😂 I think tea is next 🤔
I love that you use soccer shin guards!! I am 50 and have been skating since the 70's and use shin guards for the exact same reason. They have helped save my legs countless times. So glad you are recommending this. Your videos are great btw 😊🛹🌞👍
I also used to use my cycling gloves to help save my palms back in the day...
I seriously love my shinguards. They are probably the second favorite item for me! Glad I'm not alone in using them 💪 And thank you! I'm stoked you're enjoying the videos.
